wrigley field from right bleachersThe Dodgers come to town for the first time this year, which means a first look at Yasiel Puig (and Carlos Marmol in a Dodgers uniform). Chris Rusin will try to hold down a strong Dodgers lineup as he continues his bid to stick in the rotation. It’s been so far, so good on that front.

No expectations……but…..if the Cubs are “on”, I say we got a chance.

  • Anonymous

Wow, the cubs should definitely win. All they have to do is the ball to center because the dodgers have two people in right and no one in center.

    • Anonymous

I meant to say hit the ball to center. I’m so dumb

    • Soler Power

That is the the thing about Puig. He can play CF and RF at the same time.

      • cubmig

damn……does that mean he bats twice?

        • Anonymous

It’s fixed, now I look stupid because my comment makes no sense

          • Cubbie Blues

            Don’t worry, you’re anonymous.

  • Cubes

RF bleachers “Puig your pitch recognition reminds me of my ex-wife”
    “also I have no ex-wife”

  • Eternal Pessimist

Didn’t even notice the Carlos was elevated to the big leagues again. WHIP 3.0 after first outing. Guess it will take more time for Dodgers to “fix him”, but maybe the cubs will get something out of the trade after all.

  • Jed Jam Band

BOOM! K’s Puig. That was a beautiful pitch.

  • On The Farm

    Rusin Ks Puig. RUSIN-MAINIA!!!

    • Jed Jam Band

That pitch…I will be talking about that strike three for weeks.

  • ssckelley

    Junior Lake went DEEP!

    • Dustin S

Not sure which I liked watching more, Lake’s or Rizzo’s HR. When Lake hits one it seems like he absolutely crushes it.

      • Jed Jam Band

He’s got superstar-level swagger too, which always makes it more fun.

  • Jed Jam Band

    GAH! Back-to-back!

  • ssckelley

    RIZZO went deep!

  • ssckelley

    Back to back pitches even

  • Soler Power

    Lake: 1 Puig: 0

  • Jed Jam Band

    Rusin’s location is nasty tonight.

  • William

I am so annoyed because I tuned in after the homeruns!

  • CubsFaninMS

I’m just as happy with Lake’s approach as I am the result. Strike 1 he swung at a Soriano sinker. Nolasco threw him three more trash pitches (albeit very close to the strike zone) and Lake laid off. Nolasco was forced to throw a strike and WHAM. Is he learning? That’s what we hope to see from Baez. Sample size alert, of course.

  • CubsWSchamps2016

Anyone think Junior Lake will be sent back down to Iowa once Bogs and Sweeney are back? As much as I don’t want him to get sent down I think he should because he still needs to develop.

I think needs to go down to refine his plate approach and learn how to field the positions specifically the center field.

Importance in th Grand Scheme: Excitement with the Big league club < Overall development (Slowing down his arbitration clock)

    • Griff

Not a chance Lake goes down. Borbon hopefully. I don’t care if he’s out of options. I’d like to see Watkins over Borbon actually. I don’t hate Borbon but I don’t see his upside.

      • CubsWSchamps2016

Lakes bobble in the outfield proves my point. I don’t want Lake to be sent down to the Outfield but the guy strikes out way too much and needs to learn how to field his position. Also once Sweeney and Bogs come back will their be enough at bats fpr him in the lineup? I’m not sure if there will be. If Lakes up in the bigs he needs to play everyday to continue to develop

        • CubsWSchamps2016

Sent down to Iowa* not Outfield

          • Rebuilding

            He’s not going anywhere

        • Griff

I think Lake is what he is. He’s going to strike out, make errors, etc. He brings energy ,athleticism, speed, power which we lack. Bogs will definately not take away bats from Lake IMO. Lake will be in the lineup, good thing about Lake is he’s athletic enough to play about anywhere.

          • mudge

            Lake is wicked smart.

    • nkniacc13

I doubt you see Sweeney until Sept.

  • Bill

@dSoldevila Eloy Jimenez officially signs with the Cubs. $2.8 millon plus $250k for college

  • William

Yu Darvish has 12 k’s through five innings!

    • Soler Power

      Teheran with 8 through 3.1

      • William

Darvish’s pitch count is way too high to challenge the record.

  • CubsWSchamps2016

Interesting: Jonathan Mayo ranks: Jairo Beras #7 in Texas’s top 20. Eloy Jimenez have a shot to squeeze in Cubs top 20?

I get he’s only 16 and is completely raw but is also extremely gifted with a true 5 tool talent ability. Jairo Beras is only 17 playing the AZ rookie league and only has 64 professional at bats under his belt and is already in a good Texas farm systems Top 10 prospects. I get the Cubs system is better then the Rangers now but it be interesting to see if Jimenez the concensus top prosepct from this IFA’s class could sneak in the Top 20 prospects. His Ceiling is almost as high as anyone in the farm system but his floor is very low at this point because he’s so raw and inexperienced.

IMO i think he’s not in not the cubs top 20 because our farm system is so deep but I think his very high ceiling makes for an interesting debate, and I think based on that I’d put him in top 30 for sure.

    • Rcleven

Lets wait till he plays on American soil before ranking anybody. Ranking any player is foolish till he can play age appropriate competition here in the states.

      • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

That’s usually where I fall – the stats mean almost nothing there, and we know very little on the scouting side. Get in a few stateside months, and then we’ll talk.

  • Soler Power

    Now it’s Lake: 2 Puig: 0

  • KidCubbie

    WOW Lake goes deep again!

    • KidCubbie

Of course he did, I just dropped him from my fantasy team yesterday.

  • Afinch

Lake has a pretty looking swing when the ball gets elevated.

  • http://Bleachernation Lou Brock

If Lake can handle 3B then I think when Sweeney gets back you let him give iy a try. Olt is not producing anything thus far.

    • Rebuilding

Lake can’t handle 3rd at the major league level. He’s probably going to struggle to handle LF. This FO isn’t going to do anything with Lake for the Sweeneys and Bogusevics of the world during a lost season. I would expect to see Lake in LF everyday until he’s in an 0-20 slump

      • Tim

2-HR game so far…Im fine with him in LF

        • Rcleven

And we ignore the bobble in left that let a run in?
Lake still has a lot to learn.
Lake still has a lot of holes in his game.

          • Tim

Better Lake in LF than LaHair in RF haha

          • Danny Ballgame

Has he even played outfield for 2 months in his carrer yet?

          • Jp3

Was it one run he let in and he is responsible for 2 for us so….

      • Rebuilding

I’m not sure of your point. Yes, Lake is going to make mistakes in LF. He has the athleticism to play there, but it will be an adjustment. But there is no reason to give Bogusevic and Sweeney at-bats over him at this point. They are known quantities, although I do expect Sweeney to get starts against the really tough righties to protect Lake. You might as well see what you’ve got

        • Danny Ballgame

Can we let the dude play OF for a little bit before we deem him unfit for the outfield? He has the tools. Just needs to learn how to track fly balls and field hard hit balls with movement. No reason he couldn’t be a decent to good outfielder, dare I say Sori 2.0

          • Jimmy James

Just make sure McKay stays around for at least next spring

        • Cubbie Blues

Did you just argue with yourself?

          • Rebuilding

If that was addressed at me – No, my point was that Lake will get the majority of at-bats, but they will put Sweeney in against tough righties to protect Lake. Not for the purpose of giving Sweeney at-bats. There’s a difference

    • Josh t

Lake can’t handle 3rd @ the major league level. Maybe a spot starter in a utility role but not a full time 3rd baseman. He’s pretty bad at 3rd

  • iowacubs

    What Puigmania…looks more like Lakemania

    • Afinch

      Was thinking more Junior fever?

      • iowacubs

Sounds like something you’d take baby tylenol for

        • Afinch

My 4 week old is cranky tonight. Maybe he’s got the Junior fever.

        • Jp3

My baby is cranky tonight but I suspect it’s from teeth popping up 2 at a time… I’m never going to sleep again. He’s 8 months old

      • Tim

Chicago is HOT with that Lake Effect wind

  • Griff

    Lake and Bake

  • William

Lake would have drop kicked the ball out of the catchers glove!

  • willis

    Junior Lake is awesome.

But against this lineup, Rusin was doomed. Too much firepower.

  • Soler Power

Dodgers 39-43 before acquiring Marmol and 18-6 after. We should have kept this guy, he obviously has a ton of value.

  • Jon

Dumbass move by Svuem to PH a switch hitter Valbeuna for Ransom. He had to know Martingly would just bring the righty in. He really manages with his head in his ass at times.

    • Carew

      Valbuena isnt a switch hitter

      • Jon

        Never mind, I’m high

  • Jon

Ugh, Jim Belushi, could this night get any worse?

  • Chad

Sveum seems to manage the day-to-day stuff well, but his late-inning decisions are poor.
