Quantcast

wrigley field from right bleachersThe Cubs today called up Jake Arrieta to make his second start with the team, and he’ll likely hold down that rotation spot for the rest of the season. The Cubs want to get a very close look at him heading into the offseason, and it starts today.

He’ll be taking the roster spot of the well-traveled Eduardo Sanchez, who heads back to Iowa via the option.

  • Jon

At least that lineup is something I can “stomach” not like that garbage Svuem threw out there on Wednesday.

    • baseballet

Agreed! Wednesday’s lineup had quite a few slabs of meat wearing Cubs jerseys.

  • Bails17

FYI…Manuel out as Phils skipper….Ryno in!

    • Jon

Dat Sandberg paid his dues and brings Da Fire and Da Passion to da dugout.

  • jay

He rode the buses and hit grounders here at Mesa in 112 degree heat with no fanfare. Few H.O.F. do that.

  • George Jetson

Both Carpenter and Wong playing 2b? i don’t know is playing 3b? Help!

  • On The Farm

You weren’t kidding Brett, they really do grow them on trees, this Kolton Wang has come out of nowhere!

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

I was so focused on getting his first name right, I misspelled the last.

      • On The Farm

A little friendly jest. Kudos on getting the first name right as when I was trying to make fun of you I got his name wrong.

        #FAIL

    • cubsin

Kolten Wang was their first-round pick in 2011.

    • DarthHater

I’m sure the bleacher faithful will start a few Wang chants during the game.

      • Headscratchin

        A little Wang Chung tonight?

  • On The Farm

Anyone else notice how much better Arrieta’s number’s look compared to Westbrook’s?

  • Walter Sobchak

Big Nate holding down the cleanup spot and if you dare pitch around him ……Castillo!!!!

  • Cyranojoe

Woah, JD said the Cubs have the 2nd-highest walk rate in baseball since the All-Star break! For realsies?

  • terencemann

Castillo is doing a great job of saving Arrieta’s ass. Half these pitches are no where near where he’s setting up.

  • Jason P

Arrieta’s stuff is incredible; I’d say better than Samardzija’s. If he can command his pitches anywhere near league average — obviously, a big if, and I’m not sure it’ll happen — he could be a huge steal.

    • On The Farm

I agree, I was just going to comment on how everyone was saying he doesn’t create a lot of swing-and-misses, but he is up to 4 on the day I believe against the all-mighty Cardinals to-boot. So far I am loving the Feldman (and Clevenger) deal.

      • Jason P

Even if Arrieta turns out to be a bust, I think that deal could still turn out to be a win for the Cubs if Strop sticks in the bullpen long term. It’s not like we gave up much.

      • Arrieta’sUncle

Jake has averaged 0.77 strikeouts/inning in his major league career.

        • On The Farm

Don’t get me wrong, the first time I watched him in the double header I knew that he had the stuff to get strikeouts. His movement is unreal (figureatively), I may be developing a tiny man crush.

    • Dustin S

Yep, the Strop+Arrieta for 3 months of Feldman deal is looking pretty good already. I’m not sure if he’s made any mechanical adjustments since coming over from Baltimore, but he has pitched really well. Starting to get a little logjam in the rotation, especially if Hendricks comes up.

  • Peter

    Castro is a fucking loser

    • http://odu Greenroom

“A f&^*$% loser” A bit over the top, don’t you think.

  • JB88

    *Sigh*

Starlin is really making it hard to defend him these days …

    • Jon

Was he swinging on the first pitch?

  • On The Farm

Did I really just see that right? Was Barney intentionally walked?

    • DarthHater

Nah, I think you ate some bad mahi mahi.

    • ssckelley

Barney now leads the team in intentional passes, that was his 5th of the season. I don’t think the other teams realize they are doing the Cubs a favor by walking Barney to get to the pitcher.

  • another JP

As of today I wouldn’t mind seeing Rusin and Arrieta in the rotation next year. As of today… and hopefully by the end of the season too.

    • ssckelley

You could be right, Rusin almost made the team in spring training. Perhaps he is the next Jamie Moyer. I can definitely see why everyone was so high on Arrieta, his stuff is incredible. I don’t get why he struggled so much in Baltimore.

  • another JP

Haha, go grab some bench Holliday you POS. Jake with the K and a nice job getting out of a jam

  • BT

Is it just me or did the catcher throw an elbow into Murphy on purpose? Even if he had the ball, I’m not sure that was a tag.

    • Arrieta’sUncle

      I thought so as well.

      • cub2014

Heck Arrieta’s stuff is as good as Samardijza

    • cub2014

It was a clean play at home. But I still hate the
      Cards….GO CUBS!

  • Arrieta’sUncle

That was sweet! When do we squeeze?

  • ssckelley

I wish I could see the Cardinal fans faces watching this. They have to be like “WTF!”, the Cubs have scored just as many runs in this game as they have the previous 6 previous home games.

  • willis

Hmmm, so this Arrieta cat is pretty damn impressive. Dude has wacky wild kool aid style stuff, good god if the Cubs’ staff can figure a way to help him harness it. He could be a nice rotation piece of he can keep this up. Awesome stuff kid.
