That was the kind of loss I would have expected from the 2012 Cubs, not the 2013 Cubs. Don’t get me wrong, the 2013 Cubs aren’t a particularly good team either, but they haven’t yet perfected the art of losing in unbelievable and inexplicable fashion quite like that 2012 squad. They’ve had some jaw-droppers, but, generally, when the 2013 Cubs lose, they lose close, and because they didn’t get any hits with runners in scoring position.

Losing after scoring six in the first and knocking the starting pitcher out before the end of that inning? I didn’t see that coming.

Time to start shutting Russell down?
He’s just worn down since the first of the month.

    • mdavis

yeah seriously. he was overused last year, he needs to be shut down and get a jump start on some rest. call up Raley and plug him in the pen as the lefty, since that’s his most likely future anyways. Russell has been just plain bad lately.

      • cub2014

rosscup will be up shortly as your lefty reliever

        • cub2014

I see the cubs DL Rondon and drop ransom, mcdonald, jackson,
and gillespie off the 40 with Baker,Sweeney & Valbuena coming
off DL. Leaves 2 spots open, Rosscup & ? Alcantera or Baez
maybe? We will probably see Raley,Sanchez,Sappelt,Olt,Boscan
and Grimm after the Iowa season (big yawn).

    • willis

That needs to be the plan. The kid is throwing moon shots up there time after time. Yet he is put into close games time after time. Sveum is going to use him as long as he is down in the pen, the only hope is that the FO steps in and shuts him down, bringing up another lefty.

  • Ron Swanson

Wow. It’s getting pretty tough to even care anymore. Ugh.

    • RY

very true, everyones’ time is more precious than giving it to this garbage team, unless of course you are into torture comic relief.

    • Trueblue

Well said, it is very hard to care any more. I spend more time on bleacher nation than I do watching the Cubs game. This site has been therapy for my Cubs woes. I’m close to the edge of not watching them anymore. I have four season tickets for every Cubs game and my sons won’t even go to the games any longer. Considering they love baseball and play high school baseball that is pretty sad. It looks like we are set up to throw away another season next year. At some point that have to try to make this team better at the big league level. If I was a player on the Cubs and wanted to win it would be very demoralizing to play for the Cubs.

      • koyiehillsucks2

I agree. Unfortunately all the moves the Fo has made are to maybe start competing by 2016. Anu useful veteran who could be productive the next 2-3 years has been traded. The farm will take time to develop and is always a crapshoot and the FA market is thin the next few years so I don’t know how they plan on being competitive in the next few years. Which is why it’s insane for the cubs not to consider abreu, if they will bank on the farm at least add as much talent as you can, and get someone who can effectively developthem(ie. not sveum).

      • demz

This is silly. This year two of the rebuild. Next season is going to need to go well. The front office will focus very heavily on the MLB team this off season, I can almost guarantee it.

        • nkniacc13

I think they will be somewhat more focused on the MLB team this year but I still wouldn’t be shocked to see them sign a bunch a players to 1 or 2 year deals with an option. Im just not sure that with the team they have right now and the fact that they really don’t have a lot of places to add starting players unless they make trades

  • SalukiHawk

It wasn’t even Jackson or the bullpen runs that bugged me most. It was that the Cubs didn’t score a single run after the first inning. Putrid.

  • MichiganGoat

Games like this feel like this

    • CubFan Paul

      Great movie.

  • sven-erik312

Skake it off, we still got tomorrow

  • jon

Chear up boys, we got a 2 game lead for 4th in the fecal league and we are 1.5 out of 3rd

    • Ron

I would expect more runs in the fecal league.

      • HoustonTransplant

        Ha, well done.

  • Ron Swanson

Chase Headley is only hitting .238? Imagine the outcry from fans and media if the FO would have been successful trading for him in the offseason.

    • Canadian Cubs Fan

Stanton is having an equally sub-par season, but people still seem I want to give up the farm for him. I think it’s a case where fans tend to undervalue the guys they have and overvalue players on other teams. Castro & Rizzo = Headley & Stanton.

      • RoughRiider

I’d give up the south fourty for Stanton but not the north fourty.

  • JM

    No homer from Murphy?

    He’s slumping.

  • notcubbiewubbie

should have traded russell when he had value.overuse has turned him into marmol(very ineffective).toooooooooo many times used and toooooo many times up in the pen.that’s the problem when ur pen sucks.just like piniella and cuckoobird quade overused marmol sveum has way overused russell.

    • cub2014

I dont like Svuem (and he uses Russell in the wrong
spot, like against Hairston the other night) but we
need another lefty in the bullpen.

      • willis

Hopefully next year there will be two lefties and 5 righties in the pen. The candidates are there and probably ready now. Russell is toast.

  • Canadian Cubs Fan

Edwin Jackson sucks. And no, I don’t give a crap about his “peripherals”. This is the third time the offense has given him an early lead of 5 or more that he has coughed up. Good pitchers sniff out wins like this, bad pitchers blow them.

Pitcher wins are a really overrated stat, but in situations like this they still have merit. Advanced metrics only matter when a players performance isn’t as blatant as Jackson’s.

Good pitchers know how to win. Shitty pitchers know how to lose. Jackson knows how to lose.

    • Trueblue

He is bad. Year one of this contract has been a total failure. At 7-13 with a 5.00 era making 13 million a year thus far a very poor investment. The same could be said for Castro and Rizzo neither had to have their contracts extended. I can make an argument for Castro given his first two years, but Rizzo? He played one year before getting an extension. I am really concerned about their development. They both took enormous steps back this year.

      • Beardface

Yeah, the record doesn’t. Bother me nearly as much as his horrible ERA.

  • Ivy Walls

Cubs remind of an old time submarine movie, dive, dive, dive[img][/img]

  • Cubbiecop

It seems to me that Jackson always gets hit hard his second time through the line up. HE needs to adjust to his game plane and start throwing different pitches in different sequences… Just my observation.

  • Beardface

Okay. So the Rizzo haters out there think of this…. Pujols is making a crapload more and Rizzo is having a better season! Haha so at least we didn’t trade for Albert. Plus Rizzo is 24 and is at least hitting home runs. He will get there. If his average were .250 and he had 5 more home runs and 10 more RBI at this point, nobody would be talking. He’s never gonna bat .290+ but the homers and RBI will come.

  • Brad

Hmmm I know everyone is always saying how they want the cubs to finish at the bottom for the draft pick, but I am confused how this team could be legitimate contenders in the next couple years. Shouldn’t we be hoping that the cubs are nowhere near getting the first pick soon, or are we just being conditioned to expect a perennial loser. Wow, genius! Ughh

    • ssckelley

I don’t think so, once it is obvious playoffs are not realistic then you trade your short term pieces for long term ones (ie Garza). In my mind if you are not getting into the playoffs then there is no difference where you finish in the standings. You might as well get that higher draft pick and extra pool money to build the organization long term.

    • EvenBetterNewsV2.0

Way to think outside of the box Brad…

  • Die hard

Need to save some angst for Cutler

  • Ramy16

It’s only going to get worse..I will be at Dodger stadium on Monday to see my Cubs play The Dodgers!.. I hope to see what the future will be on display besides Castro and Rizzo
