wrigley field from right bleachers

Chris Rusin didn’t have his best outing yesterday, which may or may not have any relevance when it comes to whatever Jake Arrieta does today. But we’re watching them both closely.

Nice game yesterday Lake ….. But hey we really gotta get Bogs some at bats….. No sense

    • Mr. B. Patient

      Another example of Sveum’s brilliance.

    • Adventurecizin’ Justin

I agree. I also don’t care to see Barney in the lineup AGAIN, AND batting second.

    • Joe

It seems odd to me too, but it’s a tough balancing act right now. We need good looks at Sweeny and Bogy before the offseason, but also need to let Lake develop. Schierholz is a lock to plan against all righties.

      • Good Captain

Fair enough but what’s the rationale for playing Barney and batting him number 2?

        • KJ

Barney should not be in the lineup. I don’t think he is in the plans for the future but Theo may be showcasing Barney for the off season. Either way I don’t think he needs to be taking up quality at bats for others that may be in the plans for the future. I think they should give Lake a shot at 2nd Base.

    • mjhurdle

      totally agree.
It makes no sense. I mean, there is no way we don’t know everything concerning Lake and his situation right now, so if it doesn’t make sense to us, then it is obviously stupid and the wrong move.

      • KJ

Why can’t Lake move over to 2nd Base. I think from an offensive stand point he will do fine. His defense and be worked with but we need his bat in the lineup.

        • http://Bleachernation Lou Brock

Valbuena should play 2B and Lake should get some innings at third. Sit Barney and his sorry .215 bat.

          • KJ

This year is a wash and now is the time to see what we have. By next year either Olt or Bryant will be at third base. We need hitters in the lineup and Valbuena has not impressed me at all. He too is a .219 and .224 hitter over the past two years. We have nothing to lose at this point and Lake can at least keep the position warm for Baez in 2015.

          • RY

i agree with both of you, anything to get Barneys limp bat out of the lineup!

    • Jp3

      Calmer than you are walter

  • Jason

Great lineup Sveum. He’s going for the L. Look they need to worry about draft positioning.

    • cub2014

Looks like righties would have better luck
against helwig the way his ball moves.

  • chrisfchi

Yup, came home to a burnt out cable box. Gotta relay on the twitters for this one.

  • KJ

If Arrieta can control his fastball we will have something very special. I look at Arrieta as an possible ACE for us next year. He has all the tools and just needs to get control of his fastball. But after that first inning he looks good.

    • cub2014

Arrieta and Shark both have Ace stuff but
havent been able to do it consistantly in the

      • KJ

With Arrieta and Shark we have a fighting chance next year. But the FO needs to add bats. We can have the best 1, 2 punch but if no one is there to hit we are going to lose a lot more games. Castro and Rizzo need some protection in the lineup and they will only get that protection if the FO dips into free agency and get good quality bats.

  • Die hard

Next years starting outfield today with Lake to be moved to 3B … In 2015 Lake to 2B and Bryant to 3B with OF up for grabs.. Shuffling Titanic deck chairs

  • ssckelley

I agree with everyone on Barney, put Vabuena there if he needs at bats. I would like to see Lake at third to keep him in the lineup.

    • KJ

I think that Lake should be in the lineup until he proves he doesn’t belong in the lineup. Valbuena is going to be a utility player next year. To me Lake is good enough to start everyday and has shown he can jump start the team with his high energy approach. Hopefully over this last month the FO will look at Lake as an asset and find an everyday position for him going forward.

      • ssckelley

True, I would even rather see Watkins at second.

  • ssckelley

Wow, that last pitch was awesome!

  • jon

Not a fan of Dusty Svuem sitting Lake today

  • jon

Three years in the majors and Starlin still can’t field his position

    • caryatid62

      • Pat

Cant field his position well at least. He has lead the league for his position in errors for three straight years, after coming in second in his first partial year. Now I realize that errors are not the best defensive metric, but that’s pretty hard to do if you’re good at your job. Frankly, I could give a shit about his glove(defense). I doubt it will ever be great, but when he performs offensively it makes up for it. If he can get back to a .750 ops at shortstop I can live with the errors, at least during the rebuilding phase.

  • jon

For all that speed, Lake is a horrible basestealer

  • http://bleachernation.com someday…2015?

    Baez 2 run HR.

  • cub2014

    they should have walked baez
    rosscup stuff is nasty

  • http://Bleachernation Jay

Baez always hits a HR the day after I attend a game. That a boy, Javy!

  • Brains

Ellsbury injured…….again. For the love of god do not sign him to a 15m 5 year contract this offseason. He’s JD Drew #2.

  • Sam

Brains- Ellsbury would be a bargain at a 15m 5 year contract. Did you mean a 75m 5 year contract? I agree on the latter.

    • Brains

Yes that’s what I meant, 75m total. He’s 30 and injury prone. Worst possible contract this offseason.

  • http://It'searly Mike F

Ellsbury is a 300 hitter, with speed, OBP and is exactly the of type of guy. I don’t know what they would or wouldn’t pay, but Theo brought his name up in the latest end of the world interview. Given just how poorly Starlin and Barney have hit this season, Ellsbury could be a perfect fit. Depending on how quickly they really think Almora would be ready, I can easily see them putting him in CF and moving him to LF in say 2 or 3 years. Elllsbury makes a lot of sense if they plan to win anytime soon.

This will be an interesting offseason. No team where the entire IF fails to hit .250, can afford Barney’s horrific bat. And even more so, now is the time to make a decision on Castro. Baez is off the charts. If they are going to keep in place this manager and continue with the long held belief Theo has of working counts, going at pitchers more intellectually then the time has come to move Castro out. I simply don’t see how you can change how you do everything for a talented guy, albeit not a guy who takes over games or is every likely to. The time has come for them to face up that this isn’t Manny Ramirez and never will bill. In fact, its not fair to call him Aramis light. He’s talented yes, but not someone to change how you approach the game for.
