Enhanced Box Score: Cubs 1, Pirates 2 – September 14, 2013

For the second straight start, Scott Baker looked pretty darn good. Unfortunately, the Cubs scored just one run behind him, and it wasn’t enough to win. It rarely is.

I wonder if the Cubs will use these results as a reason to bring Baker back. I also wonder what his price will be.

I can see Baker in our rotation next season. The Cubs hung with this guy through his injury and Baker seems to have a sense of gratitude for the opportunity, so another one year deal at similar $$ wouldn’t be out of the question.

Also could do an incentive based contract on innings pitched, etc. A rotation of Wood, Baker, Shark, EJax, Rusin/Arrieta seems entirely likely.

    Theo: Yes?
Jed: and the only cure is…
    Theo: More Scott Baker
    Jed: Exactly

above is great article on FA Mgr Joe Girardi. Talks a lot about the Yanks obviously, the Nats, and the Cubs. If Girardi has any thoughts of the Cubs this needs to get done. Perfect guy for hopefully what will be a contender by 2016 at the latest. Its a no-brainer!

    Hello Tommy…………….about this Girardi fellow………

Hey, great job Mr Baker…now about that hometown discount…

Was he hitting 90 very often?

It is my understanding that Baker feels bad for not being ready much sooner. If he can be any resemblance of his old self, I’d love for him to be back on an incentive-based deal.

Pareto-optimal Scenario: Baker does the aforementioned…then pitches very well into July…but we also have a couple of guys ready for the big club…we flip Baker for a nice return!

  7. Sacko

Didn’t see the game but heard we put a lefty against a righty again resulting in a HR. Question this time did he have to pitch to him or could have DALE gone to a right hander match up? Please tell me he had to pitch to him.

Also, how many outs when Rizzo tried to score?

Sveum put in James Russell who has been his most reliable reliever since he’s been managing the Cubs. He’s been bad lately, but there’s no reason to expect him to give up runs every time out. It happened, but it isn’t Sveum’s fault. If you hadn’t noticed, the Cubs bullpen is shitty.

I dont think an incentive based deal will do the trick. Baker will be shut down after he reaches his innings/pitch limit. He may only get 25-26 starts. I do like the idea of flipping him mid season for younger talent.
