Ransom got DFA’d again? Sucks for him…

    1. gocatsgo2003

      (Sarcasm font)

  2. Senor Cub

Why is Barney still in the line-up? Surely their is someone we haven’t looked at closely enough to see what they have in the bat…Barney we’ve seen, he’s got no pop at all whatsoever and we are not losing games based on 2nd base errors so there is that.

    1. mjhurdle

im guessing it is because the Chicago Cubs feel he is the best option at 2B, but i could be wrong

    2. KJ

Barney is still in the lineup because he is in the running for another gold glove. Barney is the reigning champ and I don’t agree with the decision to play him but I guess the FO wants him to defend his “gold glove”.

  3. Eric

Did Logan Watkins do something to piss Dale off or what is the deal?

    1. Jason P

Even if you think he stinks and has no future with this team, which seems to be how many around here feel, he should still at least get an occasional start. Darnell McDonald stinks and has no future with this team, and it seems like he’s in the lineup every other day. I don’t care about what handedness either are — reps at a platoon disadvantage are still better than no reps at all.

    2. Jon

For the last time Logan Watkins fucking sucks , would you people give it up already

      1. Jason P

I was just about to comment “Shh, don’t say that, Jon will come scream at you”.

      2. JayPaul

Which still makes him as good as Barney, with more cost control and versatility.

  4. Jason Powers

I was looking at 2B/SS mediocrity offensively since 1954 to 2012 using Lahman for greater than 50 starts more than 250ABs.

The 10% percentile for OBP: .2795
The 10% percentile for SLG: .2944

    Average OBP: .324
    Average SLG: .370
    St. Dev OBP: .0355
    St. Dev SLG: .0648

Darwin Barney: .271/.313 (-1.46 S.D below on OBP)
Starlin Castro: .280/.339 (-1.25 S.D below on OBP)

    3047 player-seasons were compiled.

Just in case you didn’t realize how bad they were this season offensively.

    1. Jason P

Barney and Castro’s combined slugging percentage = .652
      Miguel Cabrera’s slugging percentage = .654

      Pretty pathetic.

      1. Jason Powers

        Both are paperbag hitters.

Castro 20 GIDP; Barney 19; both up by 7 or 8 on Rizzo and Castillo, guys you expect will rack up this ignominious statistic.

  5. Bill

Sveum is probally one of those old school baseball meatballs that plays journeymen veterans and feels like rookies should earn playing time even though they are better.

    1. TWC

Yeah. Totally. Like he did with Junior Lake, right?

  6. cavemencubbie

Is it my imagination or have we lost an inordinate number of 1 run ballgames? Anyone have any stats on this? If we have, would this seem to say we are close to turning things around in 2014? You guys have more insight that I have. Have to get back to my Dos Equis, bean burrito and the game on WGN. Thanks !!!

    1. TWC

Bad teams lose a lot of 1-run ball games. Good teams win by blowouts. That’s just how it works.

    2. Jason Powers

We are 20-31. Have compiled a 37 SV in 66 opportunities.

In general, most teams have between 30-35% of their games decided by 1-run, historically. With the 1978 SF Giants compiling a 42-26 record (most wins).
And the 2012 Baltimore Orioles with highest win/loss% (29-9). 1970 Orioles went 40-15.

TWC is inaccurate on the luck of the best:

Top 20 1-run game performers includes:
      1 BAL 2012 38 29 9 .763 137 117 .572
      2 BAL 1981 28 21 7 .750 105 91 .565
      3 PIT 1908 45 33 12 .733 111 90 .595
      4 BAL 1970 55 40 15 .727 224 199 .554
      5 PIT 1909 47 33 13 .717 159 138 .564
      6 CLE 1954 45 32 13 .711 162 143 .557
      7 WSH 1913 45 32 13 .711 141 122 .566

      9 CIN 1961 48 34 14 .708 178 158 .554
      10 CIN 1940 58 41 17 .707 218 194 .553
      11 KCR 1980 41 29 12 .707 159 142 .552
      12 BOS 1986 34 24 10 .706 147 133 .546
      13 KCR 1977 44 31 13 .705 201 183 .543
      14 CHW 1959 50 35 15 .700 177 157 .555
      15 SFG 2003 40 28 12 .700 153 137 .550
      16 CHC 1907 53 37 16 .698 134 113 .577
      17 PHA 1928 43 30 13 .698 170 153 .548
      18 CAL 1985 43 30 13 .698 170 153 .548
      19 CIN 1981 33 23 10 .697 135 122 .546
      20 OAK 2002 46 32 14 .696 180 162 .548

22 was the 1984 Detroit Tigers.

If you look closely, you have a lot of WS/playoff participates on that list.
Washington in 1925, lone championship. Royals in 1980. Cubs in 1907. White Sox in 59, Boston 86, Cleveland in 54 and Cincinnati in 1961 were a World Series attendee. Royals in 1977 in playoffs under Herzog.

So, if you have one of the best 1-run records ever in modern history, you certainly are not a Bad team. Chances are you find ways by hitting

      1. Jason Powers

or great bullpen work. (Seems the best always find ways…)

The last three columns are RS, RA, Pyth W-L%.

  7. Bill

Lake should be playing every day not sharing time with Bogey a 29 year old journeymen.

    1. TWC

The Cubs have played 55 games since Lake was called up. Lake has played in 52 of them. Of those 52, Lake has started 48 of them.

Any more vacuous criticisms you care to lob, Billy?

      1. MichiganGoat

But but but i thought Sveum doesn’t like playing the kids

  8. Jeff

Typical Cubs anemic offense on display :(

  9. Jeff

3 1/2 innings and they finally start to fall apart, go secure that 4th pick boys.

  10. Danny Ballgame

    Nice grab by Lake

  11. Jeff

Per my comment from yesterday, Lake looks alot better in left than playing center field.

  12. Jason Powers

Cubs have certainly batted their moneyed players:
    1. Castro 650
    2. Rizzo 634
    3. Barney 519
    4. Schierholtz 459
    5. Castillo 417
    10. Lake 218 is the last with over 200 PAs

    1. Die hard

Maybe too much as to first two

  13. Jason P

And that is a perfect example of why Jackson’s FIP and ERA don’t match.

  14. Soda Popinski

Yikes… 2 more errors in 1 inning. This is sloppy ball. But, losing to the Brewers isn’t the worst thing. Maybe we’ll take that draft pick after all.

    1. Soda Popinski

Holy cow this is ugly for both teams! How many errors will there be?

  15. willis

This is an ugly baseball game.

  16. willis

Haha, hearing on twitter and now WGN EJax and Sveum got into it once he was lifted for a pinch hitter.

    1. Die hard

If true that’s final nail in Sveums coffin as his contract is shorter

      1. DarthHater

This comment makes a lot of scents.

        1. Jeff

          I smell a misspell

          1. waittilthisyear

            i smell a pun

      2. Jeff

Dale Sveum managing the Cubs is like the Die Hard trilogy, he just keeps coming back, we can’t get rid of this guy.

    2. miggy80

I wonder how this will get blown out of proportion in respect to the Girardi talk

      1. miggy80

Oh shit I’m on par with Die Hard

      2. willis

A ton. It happens though so it’s really not a big deal.

      3. MichiganGoat

Yeah tomorrow might be a good day to bury my head in the sand

        1. miggy80

Goat, did you see the replay on WGN? It didn’t look good.

          1. MichiganGoat

Nope… Head in sand, head I’m sand

            1. miggy80

It might be the safest place to be. I wonder how nasty BN will be tomorrow with the Svuem supporters Vs. the Svuem hatters.

              1. MichiganGoat

It will be horrible especially once the video gets out.

                Exactly… I can’t hear you

                1. miggy80

If you need a distraction check out the series preview on the message board. Yeah I did that.

                  1. miggy80

    3. Blublud

I seen Mooney and Muscat report it.

  17. willis

    Patrick Mooney ‏@CSNMooney 12m
E-Jax, who’s been mellow all year, gets into it with Sveum in dugout once he’s pulled after 4 IP. Coaches, players stepped into argument.

    1. miggy80

Coaches, players step into argument! Hope he meant to break it up.

      1. miggy80

Whoa, from what I saw Dale was all up in EJax face pointing his finger and so was Jamie Quirk. EJax looked like he didn’t have anything to say, so I’m guessing he said “the magic word”. First impression not good for Sveum.

  18. Jeff

I can’t stand that the White Sux are doing better than us, they have a 5 game lead for the 3rd pick.

  19. Kramden

Welp, looks like the #4 draft pick. Doesn’t look like they’ll be able to catch the White Sox for #3, which would be kinda sweet. But still & all, they’ll get another good prospect.

    1. Jason Powers

2014 initial shopping list for the Draft:

      1. Carlos Rodon, lhp, North Carolina State
      2. Jeff Hoffman, rhp, East Carolina
      3. Tyler Kolek, rhp, Shepherd (Texas) HS
      4. Trea Turner, ss, North Carolina State
      5. Alex Jackson, c/of, Rancho Bernardo HS, San Diego
      6. Jacob Gatewood, ss, Clovis (Calif.) HS
      7. Tyler Beede, rhp, Vanderbilt
      8. Touki Toussaint, rhp, Coral Springs (Fla.) Christian HS
      9. Brady Aiken, lhp/of, Cathedral Catholic HS, San Diego
      10. Aaron Nola, rhp, Louisiana State

this according to BA on August 19th. http://www.baseballamerica.com/college/ask-ba-2014-draft-top-prospects/

Alex Jackson is intriguing since the Cubs don’t have a legit catching prospect – and this guy has tools in this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUGJ8qyADw0

Pop to pop was a legit 1.7 seconds at 43-44 second mark.

Another video: http://youtu.be/W2W-tOtPWRY?t=2m46s Cubs guy in the background…

But pitching arms are needed too. So another year before the draft. We shall see…

  20. mjhurdle

If only Logan Watkins had started this game instead of Barney, then we would have been up 14-0 by now.

    1. DarthHater

You mean Watkins can pitch, too?

      1. MichiganGoat

And he can chop down an entire forest with one swing. SCRAPPY POWER ACTIVATE!

      2. miggy80

        haha, he’s the Babe

      3. mjhurdle

Darth, they dont call him Babe Watkins for nothing.

From what i hear, he is a great player-manager too.

oh god, if the anti-Sveum forces get ahold of that, and combine with the Watkins Must Start crowd, this could get really ugly.

        1. hansman1982

          Aren;t they the same people?

  21. Jason Powers

Watkins did help the Cubs. His lack of performance assisted in losing more games, maybe even the difference towards an entire game, (-.3 WAR) It might make the losing difference in the final draft position.

So while we snicker, his promotion helped. He got a cup of coffee; we lost with him enough to likely select 1 position higher than without him.

    Thanks, Logan’s Run.

That’s useful since the back half of the season was built for sucking more, not less.
Since game 100 (45-55) right after dealing Garza (7/24), we’ve gone 18-32. Watkins got to the show on August 4th, to improve our chances of futility. 225px-Logans_run_movie_poster.jpg

  22. TOOT

I would really like to know what the FO saw in Edwin Jackson for the contract he got. Somebody tell mme what. They guy can’t pitch and can’t field. This was a major blunder. What’s worse, nobody wants to address it. It’s like they believe next year he is going to be an ace. What the hell?

    1. Joe

Nobody thinks he’s an ace, and he certainly wasn’t signed to be one.

      1. willis

He hasn’t had the best year but I expect him to be a bit better next season. God knows he has the stuff.

Then again the FO question can be raised for the manager too. Whatever did they see in him? And now those two are having squabbles in the dugout. Sveum’s a hot head so it doesn’t surprise me if Jackson questioned him that he would blow his top.
