It was a bullpen night for the Cubs, as Chris Rusin was knocked out early, and the relievers didn’t do much to keep the game under control. Good teams tend to beat bad teams, and so it was for the 2013 Pirates and 2013 Cubs.

Nice outings by Raley & Rosscup, though!

    • willis

Pay attention to Rosscup. I saw him in the minors and in a couple games with Chicago, he’s got some good stuff. When people salute or bitch about the Garza trade, they never mention this guy as a good get from that trade. He should be a solid bullpen presence from here going forward.

Sadly these losses haven’t help the Pirates because the voodoo of the Cardinals keep on winning.

    • ssckelley

Yep, and it is unlikely the Cubs will help much this weekend. To me it is more important that the Cubs hang on to the #4 pick than winning games. With last nights loss the Cubs eliminated Seattle from competition since the Cubs own the tie breaker. But they still have the Twins right behind them.

      • cubfanincardinalland

Nah, the Cubs will give the deadbirds fits this weekend, probably take 2 out of 3. Cardinals are all hype, when Craig went out, their chances went down the shitter. Look at their record, last 90 games they are barely over .500. Vastly overrated by the media shills. Wacha has one nice game, where the Nationals hit about 5 rockets right at guys, they got him in the hall of fame. A middle of the rotation guy with average stuff.

        • ssckelley

But right now the Cubs cannot hit their way out of a paper bag. The Cardinals are only 1/2 game out of the best record overall and home field advantage so they still have plenty to play for. Minnesota will be playing Cleveland who is trying to hang on to that last wild card spot. It is not so much the pick itself as there is not much difference between drafting 4th or 5th but it is $750K extra draft pool money you get drafting 4th that matters. If the Cubs do not purse a free agent with a qualifying offer that pool money is worth even more (2nd/3rd round picks).

It would have been nice if the Pirates could win the division or even the Reds

        • ssckelley

Nice for them but it makes no difference to the Cubs. The Cardinals have clinched the playoffs so the only difference it makes is playing in the 1 game wild card playoff.

Honestly I want what is best for the Cubs right now, I will let the Pirates and the Reds worry about the Cardinals.

          • macpete22

I don’t know about you but, the more games the Cardinals have to win in the playoffs to reach the world series the better IMO

  • hansman1982

Good news: Sveum has been limiting the usage of Russell lately.

      True.

  • chrisfchi

Isn’t this the 2nd time Rusin has been pulled after less than 3 innings of work?

Ricketts buyer remorse to set in soon

Bullpen night is the worst promotion I’ve heard of since, well, Zubaz night…

  • Hansman1982

Shouldn’t it be “Bullpen night didn’t go so well”?

  • Spoda17

Blake Parker has had a hell of a year out of the pen. So there’s that.

    • CubFan Paul

      We could do better.

  • Stevie B

I am stoked to see Baez and Bryant, along with Castro and Rizzo, on the same field. I really have a good feeling about these kids.
Of course thinking Almora and Soler, along with the above, will ALL click and make it is a pipe dream, but you have to admit, injuries aside, it is looking good so far.
