Well, at least the Cubs made the Cardinals fight for that division-clinching win.

Travis Wood got his 200th inning last night, in something of a farce – he pitched just one inning, giving up three earned runs, and saw his ERA jump from 2.98 to 3.11. Was it worth it? Is 200 innings at 3.11 more impressive than 199 at 2.98? As I said last night, I kind of hate these forced, arbitrary, and artificial achievements. If I’m Wood, I would have much rather finished my season with an ERA under 3.00, if we’re going to pick landmarks.

As for the game, well, it wasn’t much of one.

Who wins the fecal league tiebreaker between the Cubs & Twins?
(Assuming both teams finish w/ indentical records?)

    • ACA

In the event of a tie, the Cubs will get the better pick (4th) due to having a worse record the previous year.

  • Die hard

Enough of the excuses as to why this team is the favorite patsy of the league– just forfeit the rest of the games and get out of town

First time in the history of the world that i have wanted the Cards to beat the Cubs. Tough moment: attempting to explain to your Cub-loving 4 year old son that we actually want the Cardinals to beat the Cubs this weekend. I feel like I am failing him in some way here. He knows that we don’t like the Cards because ‘they are mean to the Cubs’ >> do what you gotta do!!

    • cubfanincardinalland

Whether the Cubs are picking 4th or 5th in the baseball draft is just trivial in the whole scheme of the team. Just really does not make much difference boys. Cheer for your team to beat the stinking Cardinals.

Yeah, as a father of an 8 year old (named Waveland, btw), I would rather model team loyalty and support in the face of adversity rather than the slightly cynical (and pointless in my opinion) pulling for our guys to lose so we get a slightly better draft pick.

Not getting on your case – just encouraging my point of view.

Appropriate score reflective of how much effort is being put into each team…

Connect the dots — Sveum leaving and Castro hitting

  • cubfanincardinalland

Who exactly came up with the idea for Travis Wood to only pitch one inning?

    • http://www.frenchrocks.net Ian Afterbirth

Yeah I wonder if Wood actually went to Sveum and asked to pitch the first inning only. I can’t really envision it.

And why didn’t they just have him come in in relief? I know that wouldn’t guarantee an appearance for him, and that he’s used to starting, not relieving, games, but he’s probably *never* started a game knowing he was pitching only one inning.

      • cubfanincardinalland

If the idea came from the front office, then this team is more screwed up than I thought. They would be doing Sveum a favor by shit canning him.
If the idea came from Sveum, then he deserves to get bounced. Just an idiotic move by the Cubs, and disrespectful to the game of baseball. The Pirates deserved a 100% effort from the Cubs last night, not a spring training style setup. Bad bad karma.

        • http://www.frenchrocks.net Ian Afterbirth

          Agree with all of that.

      • Kyle

I’m absolutely positive it came from Wood. There’s no way a manager would care about it or the front office, but a player might, and it’d be a nice favor to him.

  • #1lahairfan

At least Castro is finishing strong.

  • cavemencubbie

I didn’t see the game, but why all the Sveum hate for pulling Wood after one inning? The stats seem to indicate that Wood got hit pretty hard, 4 hits, 3 earned runs. Why not pull him? It might have been a bad night for Wood or perhaps a minor injury. Geez, some people.

    • willis

Because it was a pre planned strategy for the game, the Cubs announced before the game that Wood, no matter what, would only pitch the one inning to get his 200th inning. It was another loser screaming idea/mentality by whoever made the decision. Originally we thought it was Sveum just being a putz as usual, then Muskat came out and said it was the FO’s decision, not Sveum’s. Who knows who was responsible and I don’t think anyone cares, it was a pussy thing to do and gave the Cardinals the game before the first pitch even happened. And I believe that affected Wood’s mentality and helped with his struggle last night.

      • Kyle

If Bogusevic makes a catch he probably should have made, Wood’s mentality would have been just fine.

      • cavemencubbie

Thanks Willis. I was not aware of the pre-game shenanigans and Wood pitching 200 innings. Is that supposed to be some kind of honor, like the CMH the Cub’s Medal of Honor?
