busch stadiumAs it is with the final season of ‘How I Met Your Mother,’ the 2013 Chicago Cubs season mercifully ends long after an ending would have been appropriate.

The day is not without intrigue: tied in the standings, if the Cubs and Twins finish the day tied as well, the Cubs will receive the number four pick in the Draft next year. If the Twins lose and the Cubs win, the Cubs will pick fifth.

    Woo Hoo!!! Bring on Monday!

Looks like they are going to sit Navarro to preserve his .300 BA.

  • http://www.justinjabs.com/blog/ justinjabs

Hey, the HIMYM season 8 premiere was pretty good. And the mother is freaking adorable.

    Finish strong, SharK!

    • Idaho Razorback

      I love me some moms!

  • waittilthisyear

note how, outside the power numbers, similar scheirholtz’s and castro’s numbers are. however, one is praised as one of the most reliable members of the team while the other is praised not so highly

    • Pat

      Nate .763 OPS, OPS+ 105, 21 hr, 68 RBI, in 500 PA
      Starlin .635 OPS, OPS+ 73, 10 hr, 44 RBI, in 701 PA

Outside of batting average, I’m not seeing any similarities.

      • waittilthisyear

nates ops is helping by his slugging (obviously). their BA and OBP are similar enough to warrant a comparison. like i said, outside of their slugging numbers…

        • Pat

But the power makes a huge difference. It’s not odd that one is talked up this year and the other not so much. Unless we think Castro can start hitting 28 hr a year (remember he has about 40% more plate appearances)

    • Jason P

Right. And if you don’t look at the middle third of the equation 2+2=4, you’re left with just 2=4. Power numbers are an important part of determining how good a player is, and you can’t fully determine a player’s value without them. And Schierholtz’s OBP is 17 points higher anyway.

One more game of Sveum and hopefully that’s all we’ll have to see.

    • Professor Snarks

Watch him make some brilliant managerial decision that costs us the 4th pick.

  • Stevie B

    Hell fire people….
What’s the difference between the 4th and 5th pick??

    People: one

    • cubsin

One more prospect on the board to choose from in each round of the draft, about $800,000 more to spend in the draft and about $250,000 more in the IFA pool.

      • EvenBetterNewsV2.0

If he is going to ask that question, he does not understand what the extra $800,000 means.

      • Professor Snarks

        Good answer.

  • MichiganGoat

Just for the drama (and it secures the Cubs 4th pick) I’m looking for the Twins to beat the Indians and the Rays and Rangers to win. So we can have this http://m.mlb.com/news/article/2013092862086484/?locale=en_US not a bad start to the two wildcard era.

  • BlameHendry

I just thought of a crazy scenario that could have happened thanks to the 2nd wild card. Lets say the Cubs swept the Cards this series and the Pirates swept the Reds at the same time. And say the Braves lost a few so the Pirates had the best record in the NL. If this happened, there would be a one game playoff between the Pirates and Cardinals. Lets say the Pirates win that game. Then, the Cardinals (the LOSING team) would “advance” to the next game, facing the Reds (to decide the Wild Card winner). Lets say the Cardinals won that game. The Cardinals would then go BACK to playing the Pirates again for a best of 5.

That would be really weird. And kinda cool honestly. There are numerous things I don’t like about the 2nd wild card but it honestly has the potential for some really interesting situations down the road.

  • willis

Not a terrible last start for Shark. No walks. Lots of hits but kept his lifeless team in it. Props to him for going out and showing up today.

  • Die hard

    2 CF — couldn’t hurt?

  • Gutshot5820

Nice summary and fitting ending for the Cubs. Cubs Shut-out, Rizzo soft ground out (no amount of BABIP was going to matter on that one).

It really sucks to be a cub fan. Burn down Wrigley and end it. We’re all loser’s. F the Cubs

  • Dustin S

Never like losing to the Cards, but the #4 draft slot is locked in. Now we wait to hear the changes coming tomorrow.

  • waittilthisyear

well, boys and girls, it was a rough year. the future does not look so bleak though. i fear we may have one more, as edwin jackson so eloquently put, “shitty” year, but 2015 could be the start of something special. thanks, brett and luke, for making this season as close to bearable as it could be by always keeping a level head about things and maintaining a site that allows for relatively civilized discussion. all the best to all the BN’ers

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

Thanks for that. And all the same.

    • miggy80

      That about sums it up.

  • Steve

Thank goodness this season is over (8-20 in Aug. and 9-18 in Sept.) overah. Been a fan since 1948. Only 17 winning seasons.

Here’s 3 things I resolve NOT to do in 2014:

    A. Make reservations for the Cubs’ convention.
    B. Fly out to observe spring training exhibition games at the new facility in Arizona.
    C. Purchase season tix

Until I see some improvement, I’m not spending any more $$$$$ on this team.

  • RY

Great job losers. Thanks for another miserable season, five and counting! Cannot wait to hear Sveum get fired tomorrow!

  • cavemencubbie

I’m still a Cub fan, but a bush league ball park deserves a bush league team. Come on Ricketts, grow some cajones and move the Cubs to a new park!
