cubaA couple months ago, the Cuban defector focus was on Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez, a promising righty in his prime who was fixing to be the best-paid Cuban pitcher of all time. The Cubs were rumored as involved, but teams had some misgivings about both his projection in the big leagues and the state of his surgically-repaired arm. The Phillies won the bidding before ultimately negotiating a lower price tag when those arm concerns reared up, presumably in the physical.

Lost in that storyline was a companion Cuban pitcher who had defected around the same time, and, although he was viewed as a lesser option, was still in the ballpark of an attractive international pitching signee. The Cubs, again, were rumored as interested. That pitcher’s name was Dalier Hinojosa, and his story went quiet right around the time Gonzalez’s was reaching a fever pitch.

The silence broke today, with Ben Badler reporting that the Boston Red Sox have signed Hinojosa to a minor league deal, presumably with an accompanying bonus. Badler says the 27-year-old will likely start out in the upper minors as he adjusts to the States and prepares himself for the highest level competition.

In the end, this probably isn’t a huge miss, and probably doesn’t involve a huge amount of money. I suspect that the timing of the two pitchers’ emergence as defectors had a bit to do with Hinojosa being discussed a bit more than someone of his talent level would have otherwise been discussed.

“CubbiesBear (Chicago): What are the top 3 systems in baseball?
Jason Parks: (No specified order): Astros, Cubs, Twins, Pirates in the mix”

Nice not to see the Cards in that list for once, although some might place them there.

I know, I know, it’s not related to Hinojosa. Boo, hoo.

      Anti-Cardinals rants are always welcomed!

This isn’t about the latest Cuban sensation, but have any of you noticed how Carrie Muscat has not placed a link about D Mart’s interview yesterday next to the slideshow of pics? Funny how there’s one for Renteria, though, and that was put up the same day Rent interviewed for the job. I’m not sure who of the two previously-mentioned candidates I would prefer. They both sound better than Sveum. It just seems odd that link isn’t up. Maybe somebody’s trying to tell us something, or maybe I’m overanalyzing. Thoughts?

    • Funn Dave

I’m guessing you’re overanalyzing just a bit. It’s probably just an oversight, or maybe the information isn’t available yet.

    • cubs2003

Maybe the interview didn’t go well, maybe they’re in the vetting process or negotiations, maybe Muskat had a day off? I wouldn’t think too much about it.

After reading that my only thought is “Colonel Mustard in the library”

Again- as stated yesterday – effective Nov 1 Cuba to sell also called defectors to Mexican League and so look for more such signings over next 2 weeks

Yeah, I heard that too. I also heard that Fidel Castro was going to represent Cuba in the Winter Olympics.

Brandon Phillips is probably getting traded this winter

    • Trigo

I hope the Cubs stay completely away from this unhappy knucklehead.

    • DarthHater

Cool, we can bring in Brandon and Dusty!

    • YourResidentJag

      I’d rather sign Granderson.

  • http://www.bleachernation.com salesguy

Brandon and Dusty, wow cool! But, only if Ozzie is the bench coach, we would probably only win 15 games per year, but I don’t think that the term circus even begins to cover that one.

  • Eternal Pessimist

And the Dodgers MVP is…Carlos Marmol????!!!!

  • Oswego chris

Not to be a downer, but the reason the Cards farms system isn’t towards the top anymore is that they have about 5 of their prospects contributing now….

    • Eternal Pessimist

…but at least their free-agency clocks are ticking.

  • Brains

    Pitchers aren’t in Theo’s “plan”.

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

Except for all of the ones they’ve drafted, signed, and traded for.

    • Jed Jam Band

Not easy to find franchise-changing pitchers in the draft, let alone through trade or free agency. If it were that simple, every team would have a Clayton Kershaw or Felix Hernandez.

      • Brains

This is true, of course. And actually our reasonably ok pitching is a highlight compared to our worse-than-the-minors hitting situation engineered, apparently on purpose, by the plan.

easily Darth’s most diplomatic meme ever.

            • DarthHater

And I haven’t incinerated a planet in weeks.

      • YourResidentJag

Well, I would hope they would pick up one that projects as a TOR in next year’s draft.

  • YourResidentJag

    Cubs to interview Torey Luvollo.
