cardinals win world series[Brett: The World Series begins today, so it’s only appropriate for Myles to look back on how his postseason predictions played out. Unfortunately, they were too accurate for comfort.]

Back in early September, before the playoffs started, I submitted my own detailed predictions for the postseason here on Bleacher Nation.

If you’re super lazy and don’t want to go back and read, let me sum it up for you: I was right as hell.

Well, sort of.

As we look back, most of my picks were right on the money. The details in how they got there were a little sketchy.  There were some misses on who won what in what division and what wild card got in along with other ticky tacky things. (Ok, so I was way wrong on the Yankees and what Prince Fielder would do this postseason.) But what’s mostly important is that I correctly chose the 2013 ALCS and NLCS teams, along with their respective champions.

I’m feeling pretty good.

Not only did I get to have the satisfaction of being right, however, I also had the pleasure of taking home some winnings from a good friend of mine who had a lot riding on the Dodgers. Double win for ole Myles.

But I need to apologize to Cubs nation. I received a lot of flack for my Cardinals pick throughout the playoffs. And rightly so. Yes, I’ve actually been cheering the Cardinals this postseason. It’s made me feel icky. Like that feeling you get when … well … when you cheer for the Cardinals in the playoffs as a Cubs fan. There’s nothing else like it. It’s the worst. I feel like I need to give my winnings to Theo and Jed to help with next year’s free agent signings. I won’t. But it’s still a good thought that I’ll keep close to my heart.

I’m sorry, Cubs nation. I really am. But the Cardinals and the brand of baseball that they’re playing right now is really good. Yes, they’re annoying. No, they don’t have awesome beards. Yes, they are literally the worst thing in baseball. But they’re freaking good. So here we are …

I’m going to let this one ride, folks. Boston loves to take walks. But Cardinals hate to dish them out. Boston has struggled with runners in scoring position (unless your name is Victorino or Ortiz with the bases loaded). The Cardinals are pretty good with runners in scoring position, especially with Beltran playing how he is and what with getting Allen Craig back. These things favor the stupid Red Birds and their stupid way of being “classy.” Just make sure you don’t scream into your glove after a strikeout, Jake Peavy! You’ll get a scolding from Yadier and Mr. Wainwright!

This is so wrong. But with Jay Culter out and the Bulls not starting until next Tuesday, I’m left cheering for a team I despise because they’re the best team and I selfishly love winning.

I really am sorry. Go Cubs Go?

[Brett: Stone this man.]

“Where did I leave that bucket of tar and all those feathers?”
perhaps you are still wearing them.

  • Rich

I went to college in St. Louis…went to a ton of games at old Busch…caught a ball from Turk Wendell..
The new stadium is the best I have ever seen. Go there and take the tour…
You have to respect an organization like the Cards. And guess what…We are getting there. The chill that damn water for watering the grass. ( The grass is from Colorado )
The Cubs really are…Read some sports pages from that cute little village..and they are getting nervous. They know the Cubs system is coming..They also know that the Cubs spending ability will also get there..So let them enjoy…They deserve it…

But…I still think Red Sox win this series…in 6……any takers?? I would love me some Lou Malnati’s pizza shipped to me in beautiful NC….

    • MichiganGoat

The only way I’m ever going to step foot in Bad Beer Stadium is on a suicide mission, if I have to drive through St. Louis I wear a radiation suit and I bring my own beverages.

      • Rich

        you’re so funny…

        • MichiganGoat

I’m not kidding… if I can rid the world of both Budweiser and the Cardinals in one swift strike I might just have to sacrifice myself for all of humanity.

          • Brains

your beloved owners have just rid wrigley of old style and have made bud the only flagship beer of the ballpark. you worship the cardinals.

            • MichiganGoat

um Old Style will still be there its just the signage that is going away… but you know FACTS- they are so unnecessary for baiting comments.

              • Brains

you eat bait like a starved fish

                • Brains

and just for the record, old style itself is worried that their “partnership” is going to end with wrigley due to BUD’s monopoly on wrigley beer. the CARDs own the CUBS rights to beer. for shame goat, for shame.

                  • MichiganGoat

The vendors can sell whatever they choose but sadly too many fans prefer Bud/Coors/Miller products over any other offerings and the vendors will sell what sells best. But go ahead and make this into some crazy conspiracy about St. Louis taking over the Cubs (as well as the majority of sport venues). Tiresome trolling is tiresome… have a great day baiting.

                    • Brains

                      inaccurate information, again, goat.

                      http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/cubs/post/_/id/20167/old-style-trying-to-keep-presence-at-wrigley

Yes they are worried, so much of their identity was tied to advertising and being connected to the Cubs, BUT the AB In-Bev marketing deal does not prevent vendors from pouring whatever they choose. Yes it will likely been the end of Old Style in time BUT it is not banned from Wrigley as you have been arguing.

I know FACTS and reading for comprehension is tough for you, but be sure to sound out the words, use prediction skills and prior knowledge- I’m sure you can understand what is being reported oneday. Until then continue to bait, use hyperbole, poorly attempt satire, and act like a troll.

Just stop Goat. He is a troll, nothing more, nothing else.

                    • MichiganGoat

I know Hans just sometime that Billy Goat Gruff in my blood has to knock a troll off a bridge. I’ll go back to ignoring him for a couple more weeks… hopefully everyone else will also.

                    • Brains

this is an inaccurate reading of my post, which never said banned anything, and the article. businesses don’t go on charm offenses because it’s fun. they’re on the verge of being removed from wrigley due to an exclusive contract with another company. so they started a petition. why is this so confusing to you, and why do you keep pouring your money into the cardinals organization?

                • MichiganGoat

I would have to respectfully disagree with your assessment of Busch Stadium.
Having lived in STL for a few years, i have had the chance to sit all over that park.
It is ‘nice’, in the way that most newer stadiums are nice. But there is nothing special about it. I liked the Busch 2 with the arches built prominently into the ring on top of the stadium, but new Busch is a generic, cookie cutter stadium. Not bad, but nothing that is great.
Also, it is infested with arrogant hillbillies that feel that they are God’s gift to baseball.

  • Blackhawks1963

Pains me to say this but this is a WS matchup of the two best franchises in the game. Both elite clubs as with the World Series hardware to prove it. Winning a World Series is the expectation every season for these two clubs. God how to be in a spot to live in that reality S a fan.

  • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

I think Wacha finally struggles, and I think the Red Sox bats finally break out. Give me the Red Sox in six.

    • Brian Peters

I’m thinking the same thing about Wacha. He can’t be that good for so long. I also predict TJ surgery for him next season.

      • Myles

Man, that’s grim. I hope not, no matter what team he plays for.

        • Brian Peters

I’m not HOPING for it, Myles/Brett. I like the kid’s stuff. I just think that it will happen.

          • Myles

            Fair

      • YourResidentJag

Wow, do you want to get hit in the head as well? Damn!

      • On The Farm

Wacha was born in Iowa City, I am having a hard time rooting against him. I mean if he gives up 3 or 4 runs it wouldn’t make me mad, but if he completely falls apart, I actually might feel bad for the fellow Iowa native.

  • Jono

Red Sox in 3. Don’t ask me how

    • Soda Popinski

      ha!

    • N8theGr8

If Goat destroys Busch Stadium as the Cards are taking batting practice before game 4. That’s the only logical explanation.

  • ssckelley

I can’t help but wonder how much money the Cardinals are going to offer Cano, Choo, or pony up for the right to offer Tanaka a contract. This is an organization that walked away from their HOF, Pujols, when the years/money got crazy. Go review their roster and payrolls, they built their roster through their minor league system and trades. There major free agent acquisition was Beltran, someone they signed for a 2 year deal who was probably undervalued and went from making 19 million down to 13 million per year to sign with the Cardinals. They resigned Matt Holiday for 7/120 at the age of 30, a player on the open market today would probably get 20-25 million per year.

    http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/STL/2013-payroll-salaries.shtml

Total spent, $116 million and they are going to the World Series for the 2nd time in 3 years and have only missed the playoffs 4 times since the turn of the century. This is the franchise the FO needs to emulate, not the Dodgers or the Yankees because the Cubs do not have the revenue streams to compete with them at this time.

  • DocPeterWimsey

For all the talk about how “clutch” the Cards are because of a high BAwRiSP, it gets overlooked that they are not unusually good in high leverage (e.g., late and close) situations. Of course, both are pretty meaningless and neither will predict performance in a short series like this.

Regardless, I’m betting that we are going to party like it’s 2004 next week!

    • jt

2013 NL OPS against pitching was lowest in the 8th and 9th innings. On avg “late and close” is facing better quality pitching.

  • hansman

I hope the Cardinals play the absolute best baseball they can, lights out, fundamentally sound, 110%, whatever other tired cliche.

and the Red Sox completely, totally and utterly destroy them in the most humiliating and disgusting fashion possible.

    • CubChymyst

      I concur

  • Dan

I love this site and will always be a BN’r. However, a cubs fan should NEVER and i mean NEVER EVER EVER!!!!!!!! root for the cardinals under ANY situation from the low A all the way up to the team in the STL. if it was a white sox cardinals world series i would root for the lesser rival the white sox i could NEVER root for the cardinals. I like Brett’s site and admire him as a person. But him calling himself a cubs fan and rooting for the cardinals makes my blood boil. My father is a huge red sox fan, and raised me to be a red sox fan. as a kid i was obsessed with baseball, and the cubs where on all the time on WGN so at around 10 i switched my alliance to the cubs. my dad talks smack to me about the red sox having 2 championships since i switched teams and even is tells my new born son red sox stories and it makes me sick but i am still rooting for the red sox in the WS because no matter how bitter i am about my father’s team breaking their curse before my team did, im a cubs fan it is not only my duty but my OBLIGATION as a cubs fan to loath anything that has to do with the cardinals franchise PERIOD NO QUESTIONS ASKED! this should be true for any cubs fan. Im a cowboys fan you don’t see me on my couch cheering on the redskins! i don’t know who brett’s nfl team is, but lets say he’s a bears fan. Does he sit on his couch and cheer the packers? Again, i like brett, but come on man! Sorry for the harsh rant but really come on its gonna pain me to root for the red sox because of my father talking smack but i have to do it i can’t root for the cardinals it goes against every fiber of my being.

    • ssckelley

I don’t hate the organization, I hate the fans. The organization is arguably the best run in all of baseball.

      But Go Red Sox!

Dan this was not written by Brett, this is a Myles piece and Brett told us to stone him…

  • sven-erik312

Years ago when I was still in high school, one of my friends played on the football team. That year, we had a pretty good team, but there were these other guys and they always won. Even the year we were good, they were better. I remember saying to my friend that I hoped they got clobbered in the the first playoff game. He said, and I’ll never forget it, he said that ya gotta pull for the guys that beat ya. Pulling againsty them only makes you look worse. Yes, the Cubs didn’t do much better than last year, but the Reds and the Cards had something to do with that too. I think it’s safe to say that the NL Central was the toughest division this year. Both CInci and Pittsburg took the wild card spots too. And our guys did for the most part, play them tough – it just didn’t turn out the way we wanted it to. So yeah, I’m pulling for the Cards, I’m pulling for the NL Central and in a cosmic sort of way, I’m then pulling for the Cubs too.

    • ssckelley

oh yeah, if the roles were opposite I am sure Cardinal fans would be rooting for the Cubs.

      • On The Farm

Sure they would, they are a classy fan base.

    • Edwin

I’d pull for the team that beats the Cubs, but then I always end up pulling for too many teams.

    • scorecardpaul

      wrong,
pulling for the Cards, I’m pulling for the NL Central and in a cosmic sort of way, I’m then pulling for the Cubs too. no that just means you are pulling for the team from down south, and that doesn’t even make sense.

      • sven-erik312

I’ll always be pulling for the NL Central first.

  • Dan

MichiganGoat I am sorry to both you and especially to Brett for my mistake. I will place the blame on the proper individual.

  • Dan

MichiganGoat you are a good dude and deserve the right to be a cubs fan! I love the picture. tho, i do not condone literally stoning the man, as i am sure you don’t either. But he deserves to be verbally stoned, and to either switch his favorite team (if the cubs are deep in his heart his favorite team, which i doubt because he cant love the cubs and root for the cardinals in any fasihion) or say he’s sorry to cubs nation. Just because I live in Albuquerque and the closest thing to MLB we got is the dodgers AAA afiliate does not make me a dodgers fan. I’m an Iowa fan!

    • MichiganGoat

Cardinal fans are not living, they are mindless communist MORANS… don’t feel bad for throwing those stones.

  • Dan

lets start are own blog site on cardinal hatred.

  • Ballgame

Ur a donkey! No true Cubs fan roots for the Cardinals under any circumstance. Great, you were correct on two obvious picks in WS. Way to go out on limb. You have egg on your face Myles, beat it!

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

I’m not sure you appreciated the playful tone of Myles’ piece.

      • DarthHater

        Ur a wombat, Brett! :-P

      • TWC

I’m sure I didn’t appreciate his use of “ole'” when the correct choice would have been “ol'” or (cringing), “ole”.

      • scorecardpaul

There was, and still isn’t anything playful about it at all.
        Fuck the cardinals

    • Myles

I believe I got lambasted because the “obvious” WS pick at the beginning of the postseason were the Dodgers.

Also, none of this is serious.

  • Kris

With all due respect Myles, no true Cubs fan will ever root for the cardinals. Even with money on the line. It’s one thing to acknowledge that they have a successful organization, it’s a completely different thing to want them to win games. Shame on you.

Brett, if you ever write something like that I will stop reading this blog.

    • jt

real men root for whom ever they want

    • Edwin

Brett, please write something like that so that Kris stops reading this blog.

    • scorecardpaul

      Edwin, please stone yourself

  • Dan

Amen, to everything you said Kris. one correction tho you should have put with no due respect

  • Dan

Playful????????? there is nothing playful of about a cubs fan rooting for the cardinals even if he isnt and he is just joking that is still a slap in the face and insulting the intelligence of true cubs fans playful brett dude really?

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

      Um … yes, really?

      • scorecardpaul

Brett, please tell us how it was meant to be playfull

    • Myles

I don’t think I was insulting the intelligence of anyone. Just trying to pick the best baseball team I think is going to win.

  • Ballgame

Even joking about the Cards doin well on here is a slap in our face. Yes, we can all admit they have a well oiled machine goin, but jeez…do we have to mock Cubs fans at the same time? Being objective is essential, but good god!

    • Myles

Can you point to where I was mocking every Cubs fan?

      • ssckelley

First the original prediction and then rubbing our noses in it. Come on Myles, what kind of reaction were you expecting?

        • Myles

Not rubbing anyone’s noses in anything. I was correct in what I thought would happen.

          • ssckelley

            You are still doing it!

          • scorecardpaul

            Myles,
If I remember correctly the first time I read one of your stupid articles you were mocking, or insulting past Cub players because you had never heard of them. I read each of the dumb articles, only to become more frustrated . To say Cub players that played in a world series are irrelevant is enough to get your ass kicked. now to come on here and brag about how f-ing smart you are because you knew the cardinals were going to win and whatever other bullshit you said is just wrong in my opinion. This is a Cub blog. I am very saddened that brett even allowed this to be run on his site. Then brett sticks up for his decision to run it. Sorry brett, my opinion of you and your site falls today

            • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

“Sorry brett, my opinion of you and your site falls today”

That would bother me more if my opinion of you hadn’t just hit the shits.

Learn what it means to have one’s tongue in one’s cheek. You’ll feel much better, and less angry about stupid things.

              • Cubbie Blues

Paul has always had days here and there like this. He once got mad at me for offering to pick up a scorecard for him while I was at a game.

                • scorecardpaul

                  Cubbie blues please explain yourself?

              • scorecardpaul

You’re allowed to have your opinion, but sometimes opinions are just wrong. So there.

            • mjhurdle

“I read each of the dumb articles, only to become more frustrated ”

Sounds like a personal problem then.
I would suggest not reading them anymore seeing as they bring out such irrational frustration.

              • On The Farm

What a revolutionary concept. If I know I don’t like something, I should try and avoid it. One can gain true wisdom on this site. Now if only we can get people to accept some of the wisdom that is presented here.

            • Jon

Paul, I”m with you on this. I haven’t found one that was worthwhile. It’s a stupid “bit” to me.

              • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

“Bits,” by their very nature, don’t appeal to everyone. At least you recognize it for what it is.

            • Jamie

Good Lord, how old are you? Grow up! There are far too many cases of fans’ inability to be objective about anything related to the sport in which their team plays. You have to look no further than the tool of a Jets fan who beat the woman last weekend. You appear to be cut from the same cloth. Loosen your belt, ask for less starch the next time you take your clothes to the cleaners and go troll another haters’ website, more appropriate for your rage.

              • EvenBetterNewsV2.0

Not agreeing on disagreeing with him on this, but you are comparing a Cub fan disliking reading another Cub fan poking the bear to a Jets fan who beat a woman last week. I am sure you see nothing wrong with that. I by and large love most everything Brett does, but just because its on his site doesn’t mean I have to drop on my knees for him. Same as Cubs Den, BCB, and others… Take them for what they are. They are forms of entertainment, but I don’t think any women were beat in a disagreement over BN.

                • Jamie

the correlation is both are wound too tight…and over nothing. So Myles picks the Cardinals…oh my!…who happened to have been the best team in the NL this year. Then Brett posts it. Why should either one be vilified for this? The closer correlation is that both clearly have a myopic viewpoint of their team, and can’t ever reach any objectivity through their passion. Don’t quite understand your comment about “I am sure you see nothing wrong with that.” You missed the point, dude. Jets fan needs his ass beat…then locked away for a good while. Scorecardpaul needs less starch and to stop blasting away over something so petty.

                  • EvenBetterNewsV2.0

Obviously you didn’t understand it. I said you wouldn’t see anything wrong with that. Of course dude needs his ass beat for it. Don’t think anyone needs their ass beat over this. Big difference. That is why I said they were two completely different things. So you are the one, dude, who missed the point. Horrible comparison. That is what I am saying. I have no say in on this article. I could care less if anyone picked the Cardinals to win the series. I would have too.

                    • Jamie

Okay, hear you. Will scratch it up to miscomms over the electronic media. Will have to admit, I long for the days that the Cubs organization can rival the success that the Cardinals have built for the next decade coming.

              • MichiganGoat

The bigger issue here is how too many visitors are missing the satire, sarcasm, and hyperbole of post like these. Somehow society has made these terms synonyms for insult in the last ten years. Its important to have some fun, laugh at ourselves, find something to laugh about as THE HORROR THE HORROR of the Cardinals succeeding, and not take everything so farking serious.

I think you must’ve been clenching your side because the Sawx just threw your guys down on the floor tonight, jumped on ‘em, then slid their bearded manhood all the way up some turdbird heinies and bruised your collective spleens. Is that why Beltran had to leave the game tonight? He was clutching his side, too. Sure hope Mr Clutch ain’t out for the series. You guys gonna blame the sweep on that?

  • Ballgame

Somewhat reassuring you’re kidding but “there’s truth behind every joke”. How I feel about stickin it to ourselves is prob how Plaxico Burress felt after shooting himself in the leg…

  • Dan

Myles I think the cardinals are going to win too the difference is your actually rooting for the cardinals I’m rooting for the Red Sox it’s not a matter of thinking who the better team is it’s a matter of who your rooting for I believe the cardinals field the best team but as a cubs fan I am rooting for Boston it’s my obligation

  • dumbledoresacubsfan

Myles, you’re still good by me.
Brett, I’ll never stop reading your stuff.

    Romo chokes.
    Go Pack Go.

    • Myles

      Thank you, sir.

  • Kris

I’ll never stop reading this blog. No matter what silly stuff Myles writes about (re:cards). What I like best about is KNOWING that Brett is a true fan and I don’t have to worry about him writing articles about how awesome the Cardinals are. We acknowledge that they are good…and we move on.

    • dumbledoresacubsfan

“Brett, if you ever write something like that I will stop reading this blog.”

“I’ll never stop reading this blog.”

That was a really quick change of mind.

  • Kris

It’s called giving someone hard time. I apologize if you can’t detect my sarcasm and light hearted humor. I’ve been reading this blog since it’s inception and have no plans to change my mind. I also just wanted weigh in on the cardinal loving article that Myles wrote. Now get over yourself.

    • dumbledoresacubsfan

It’s called lying to save face.

      Now get over yourself. :p

  • On The Farm

I think all these outbursts directed a Myles just proves how bad this team needs to win. Some of our fans are literally going crazy.

    • YourResidentJag

      Ya think. ;)

    • DarthHater

“Some of our fans are literally crazy.”

      FTFY

  • Jon

If you are a Cub fan cheering for the Cardinals, then you aren’t a Cub fan. That’s the bottom line.

    • hansman

Part of me is rooting for the Cardinals (no matter how much I hate them), if only because my Father-in-Law is a Cards fan and considering how much crap he has gone through in his life, he deserves to have these bits of joy.

But I guess if you say I have to turn in my Cubs Fan Card (I actually have one of those, btw), you can just shut the front umbrella…

      • mjhurdle

i KNEW you were a fake Cubs fan!!!

        • hansman

BUT I HAVE AN ACTUAL FAN CARD!

          • ssckelley

            prove it!

            • hansman

Ok, I’ll take a pic of it tonight.

              I’m an inagural fan too!

              • ssckelley

will my kids need to look away?

                • hansman

Depends, are you shielding your kids from Cubs fandom?

Back in 2007 they started the Cubs Club. I think that you got MLB Gameday Audio and other things along with an actual card.

I kept it thinking it was going to be worth tons of money after they won the World Series that year.

                  • ssckelley

No, damn I was trying to make a funny

                  • DarthHater

We won’t believe you until you post a scan of the card and let us see the mustard and ketchup stains for ourselves.

That address didn’t work. Can you please repost it correctly? Thanks.

    • Jimmy James

I’m cheering for the sox, there was a long kind ship with them until they screwed it up and started winning World Series…..that said, I know a lot of fans that will not cheer for an American League team.
