john-axford-mustachioThe rumored reliever options for the Chicago Cubs keep going off the board. Including the best mustache.

The latest to sign elsewhere is former Brewers closer-turned-reclamation-project John Axford, who has reportedly agreed to a deal with the Cleveland Indians. Although terms aren’t yet known, it’s expected to be a one-year deal (though the Indians can retain him for two years thereafter via arbitration). The Indians were hard into the market for an economic closer option, and, given their competitive future, it’s understandable that Axford would prefer them to the Cubs, depending on how the money shakes out. At $3 million or so, you are permitted to be fairly annoyed by this. I will be.

Back to the well for the Cubs, who are rumored to be in on Joaquin Benoit, who is still technically available. Beyond him, the Cubs could look to reclamation types like Jesse Crain or Chris Perez, each of whom could be interesting in his own way on the right deal.

in before the jokes about how legalizing medicinal marijuana in Illinois means he doesn’t have to mail it to his dog anymore begin

    • bbmoney

That was pretty classic. Atta boy Chris.

  • Elephanthole

Thanks for the early morning read! Brett hard at work getting this one out at 5:20 Chicago time.

    • CubsFanSaxMan

Agreed, wonderful job. But you must remember that Brett has two little kids – he never sleeps!!

  • mbrandon32

I personally would love seeing Crain at the back-end. Recent injuries will turn teams off but he was absolutely dominant on the South Side last year before he went down. Competition may be tough to crack the roster in that pen with the talent they already have but it’s the experience that is needed.

    • Cubfanbob

Agreed, Haven’t heard any news if Crain will be ready for opening day.

  • Die hard

If only Marmol had grown a mustache

    • Professional High A

I never thought I’d do this to a Die Hard comment but here it is…..

      +1

    • CubFan Paul

      Shit Die Hard says.

  • Moe C

Yay sign All Players!!! Oh wait that’s not us.

  • http://mccarronlegal.com jmc

Tribune says Sanchez any word on that?

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

      Separate write-up forthcoming.

Marmol, Axford whats the diff. Didn’t want him anyway.

    Recurring theme
Let’s just hope for the best & go with the kids; hope Castro, EJax, & Rizzo bounce back, wood to be ridiculous again, and away we go……

  • Barry

IMO the Cubs might already have a closer on the roster…Arodys Viscaino has closer stuff.

    • Voice of Reason

Vizcaino is Kerry wood, junior. Neither can or could stay healthy.

You can’t go into a season with guys who are always hurt and penciling them in as intergal parts of the team. Vizcaino is a set up man and anything more that you get out of him is a bonus.

      • Blackhawks1963

That’s not a fair comparison at all. Vizcaino underwent Tommy John surgery and had a minor setback in terms of the need to go clean some additional things up in the arm. It happens. Kid has a big arm and lets see what he can now do nearly 2 years removed from TJS. He has received a clean bill of health and is dialing it up at 98 of recent. Not too shabby.

Wood was a china doll. More than that, an enigma. 14 seasons in the big leagues and he could never put it together fully. Not from lack of effort by the way.

        • Chad

Shoulder injuries are much different than elbow injuries. Wood had some really decent years as a reliever but you’re right he had many issues with the shoulder and blisters. I still like Kerry Wood because he does so many good things through his foundation and is a cub through and through.

        • http://BN Sacko

remember when he went on DL for falling out of a hot tub I believe.

  • Spriggs

You can’t live off promises alone though.

Yeah, but he is a quality hurler with high up chuck side.

  • http://BN Sacko

Why didn’t Cleveland retain Perez and take Axford?

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

Because Perez was going to cost them about $10 million if they tendered him.

      • http://BN Sacko

        Thanks

  • Jon

Axe ford would not have won the Cubs the World Series this year so it’s hardly worth getting upset over

  • Blackhawks1963

Given that we aren’t going to be any good to begin with, I’m glad we didn’t get John Axford. He’s a gasoline can waiting to spark during most games.

So right now the pen options appear to be Strop, Parker, Rondon, Villenueva, Vizcaino, Russell, Wright, Rusin / Grimm, Rosscup.

Yes, I would be keen to take a whack at Jesse Crain. Always liked him, even though his arm is held together with duct tape and baling twine. Solid competitor and class act.

  • xaviergunz

So far either none is interested in signing w the Cubs or the Cubs are falling short on the offers to the players. Might as well start TANKING. Oh wait thats the Bulls.

  • PRcajun

…breath easy Villanueva. You’re still the baddest ‘stach in town, homz.

  • cub2014

so what are the thoughts on Choo?
    Here is my take:
Only one name associated with Choo-Rangers
and they still are in on Cruz. If the Rangers
sign Cruz I think the Cubs have a great shot
at Choo (I know I have heard the Cubs cant
spend money) I think they dont like Choo for
7 years but might have some interest in 5 years.
    Supposedly the Indians,Diamondbacks,Astros &
Reds are out on Choo. The Mariners are looking
for a right handed hitter. So the opportunity might
    be there.

I think Choo fits on a 5 year if he is under 20 mil.
    We shall see.

  • http://BN Sacko

Choo fits better for 2015 and may decline after. I don’t know, a lot of money for that prognosis. FO hasn’t shown we r going to make those kind of moves thus far anyway.

  • Bob Johnson

Players have to be desperate to sign with the Cubs especially with the F.O.’s flipable nature.

    • http://BN Sacko

good point, this plan sucks, We only have a vague idea who we will have in 2015 and that is not very appealing to any FA.

  • walterj

I would like to see Crain in a Cubs uniform .

  • rockin’ dawg

    Andrew Bailey.
