change-aheadAs discussed a couple weeks ago, and a few times since, you are now required to be logged in – after registering – to comment here at BN. I wasn’t thrilled about having to implement this requirement, but I think the overall commenting experience, both for commenters and comment readers, will improve dramatically.

You should see a link below posts that admonishes you that you have to be logged in to comment, so going through the registration/login steps should be pretty self-explanatory. To the extent they are not, I have created a commenting FAQ to help with any questions you might have.

So, if you haven’t already, feel free to register here. When you sign up, you’ll be sent an activation email to the address you provide. Activate via that email, come back to the site and login, and you’re good to go.

This change should weed out a great deal of the drive-by commenting that can quickly and easily muddy up a quality discussion.

I reserve the right to scrap this change if it proves to be ineffective or actually makes things worse in the coming weeks. Let’s see how it goes, and I hope you all give it your best.

  • 100 Years of Tears

Happy 2014, Brett! Thanks for working to improve the comments section.

    Go Cubs!

    • Brett

The first official post-registration, registered-person comment! See, it works!

    • Fresno Cubs Fan

With a new year….there is always new hope!

  • inkastad

Glad to see this finally kicking in!

  • Cubsin

The story of my life. I’m #2! Happy New Year, Brett, Luke, and all of the serious posters. I really hope the new posting rules work.

  • farmerjon

Still here….whew! I visit multiple times daily, love the site and all the work you guys put in…hehem ::cough:: luke, it’s the first of the year, chop chop ; ) time for some prospecty goodness, obsessive tanaka just ain’t cuttin it ; )

    • Brett

Don’t blame Luke – he’s got two Prospects Progress ready to go, but they’re so awesome I didn’t want to bury them over the holidays. So you’ll have to wait!

      • farmerjon

        You’re such a tease ; )

  • SFCCubFan

Happy New Year… Excited about another year of Cubs…

  • BigsmokeJ

  • Mike Taylor

    Troll check 1…

  • WAS

    Astros sign Jesse Crain.

  • Hawk1943

Like the idea that has to sign in to minimize trolls and obnoxious comments.

  • cubzfan

Here’s hoping for a New Year filled with a top-line starter, a solid hitter in LF, and healthy arms all around.

  • mike

Hopefully this cuts down the riff raff

    • bbmoney

      Sorry I’m still here.

      • Brett

This has been a total failure.

    • Fresno Cubs Fan

      Ruh-Row Riff Raff?

    • Blackhawks1963

      I’m riff raff.

  • arta

great to be on board. now let’s make this a year to remember. go Cubs!

  • ssckelley

I sure hope this new rule does not take a way the quality and quantity of the comments. The entertaining debates on this site is what attracted me to this site to begin with.

Wishing BN all the best for 2014, GO CUBS!

  • Boogens

Does this mean we’ll get the “edit” button back? 😉

    • Brett

I won’t overpromise and underdeliver, but it’s conceivable that this will open up a handful of things (like that).

  • CubsFanSaxMan

Happy New Year! If I can figure out the register/log-in anyone can! Let the comments begin.

  • 5412

    Happy New Year Brett,

I have a question. I can’t find any way to contact you directly anymore. We are headed to spring training and would be glad to drop you some notes if you want them.

    best regards,

  • 5412

    Hi Brett,

I see a glitch. At the top of the page it shows an icon to “login” as though it is prompting me to do so. As I scroll down to the reply section it shows me as already logged in.

You may want to make sure the icon on the top of the page shows logged in so we don’t start figuring we have to log in again.

    • Brett

Thanks – that’s just a static link, though, for folks who can’t otherwise find where to login. Even if you click it (while already logged in), it won’t log you out. In other words, once you log in, you’re good to go. I’ll work on the layout when I have some time to try and lose those links once you’re logged in, but it’s not terribly simple.

  • Ivy Walls

Hope you all have a merry old time this holiday and the best of healthy through the year! Looking for something to change the trajectory instead of merely incremental improvement here or there. Cubs must fulfill more than a promise and start performing above expectations.

  • cubzfan23

Does this mean I`m a somebody now?

  • Isaac

Happy New Year, BN! Here’s to a prosperous and awesome year for everyone and especially the Cubs.

  • MichiganGoat

    Ah the new BN

  • cubmig

ok…….after having to reset my password, I’m back…………

  • Boba

How do you do the profile pic deal?

    • NorthSideIrish

      • Boba

Thanks! Now to figure it out

        • DocPeterWimsey

          I recommend a robot.

  • ChrisFChi

I wonder if die hard registered yet…..

    • Brett

Someone did recently register the name “die hard,” though based on the email address used, I fear that someone squatted on the name so that the real die hard couldn’t get it. That’s the kind of unanticipated thing I’ll have to figure out how to deal with.

      • ChrisFChi

I hope its just another e-mail the real die hard uses. his conspiracy theories add a comical value to the comments that is sorely needed at times (arguments sometimes get outta hand).

        • Brett

If the email address used actually belongs to die hard, then we’ve had a very interesting person in our midst all these years.

          • MichiganGoat

Well that would be so diehard

  • twinkletoez

    Happy New Year fellow BNers

  • 1ski

That was easy. Happy new year everyone.

  • Blackhawks1963

This new system is a no-go on my I-Phone because Word Press demands that you enable cookies. Not the way 99% of smartphone users would operate Brett.

    • Brett

Every site that has a login requires cookies. That’s how it can tell that you’re logged in.

      • Blackhawks1963

Not going to enable cookies on my iPhone. I don’t think anybody would be wise to do so. Hence, I guess I won’t participate via my Smartphone and will be limited to laptop usage.

The price? Instead of saying the same thing on Tanaka 14 times a day, I’ll be limited to only 3 or 4 times.

        • J. L.

Let me thank you for not enabling cookies on your phone, then.

        • Scotti

I’m FAR more likely to enable cookies on my phone (the NSA is already watching my every move through 99 percent of my apps) than my laptop. Maybe that’s just me though…

          • DarthHater

Scotti is right. Blackhawks, you’d better disable cookies on your laptop, too. ;-P
