cj edwards daytona cubsMinor League Ball’s John Sickels is ramping up for his Chicago Cubs prospect list – Sickels does top 20s with a bunch of guys who just missed – and it sounds like he’s having trouble cutting things down. That tends to be a good sign. Sickels has listed 40 Cubs prospects in the running for his list:

Arismendy Alcantara, 2B
Albert Almora, OF
Gioskar Amaya, 2B
Javier Baez, SS
Yasiel Balaguert, OF
Dallas Beeler, RHP
Corey Black, RHP
Paul Blackburn, RHP
Kris Bryant, 3B
Alberto Cabrera, RHP
Jeimer Candelario, 3B
Shawon Dunston, Jr., OF
C.J. Edwards, RHP
Kevin Encarnacion, OF
Jacob Hannemann, OF
Kyle Hendricks, RHP
Brett Jackson, OF
Eloy Jimenez, OF
Pierce Johnson, RHP
Eric Jokisch, LHP
Dillon Maples, RHP
Brett Marshall, RHP
Jefferson Mejia, RHP
Mike Olt, 3B
Ivan Pineyro, RHP
Neil Ramirez, RHP
Armando Rivero, RHP
Zac Rosscup, LHP
Rock Shoulders, 1B
Jorge Soler, OF
Matt Szczur, OF
Gleyber Torres, SS
Jen-Ho Tseng, RHP
Duane Underwood, RHP
Christian Villanueva, 3B
Josh Vitters, 3B
Arodys Vizcaino, RHP
Dan Vogelbach, 1B
Logan Watkins, 2B
Rob Zastryzny, LHP

The obvious names are there, plus a whole bunch of new guys: 2013 draftees include first rounder Kris Bryant, second rounder Rob Zastryzny, and third rounder Jacob Hannemann (the scouting reports must be very good). There are also 2013 IFA signees Eloy Jimenez, Gleyber Torres, Jefferson Mejia, and Jen-Ho Tseng.

The crazy part? Despite the inclusion of 40 names up there, I can immediately think – off the top of my head – of a number of other guys who could be top 40 types in the Cubs’ system: Tyler Skulina, John Andreoli, Zeke DeVoss, Stephen Bruno, Dustin Geiger, Marco Hernandez, Daury Torrez, Juan Paniagua, Erick Leal, Carlos Rodriguez … I could go on.

In the meantime, Luke is hard at work on his Top 40 list. You will have to remember things like this when the list comes out and you’re eager to give him grief – this is a very hard system to rank right now, for all the right reasons.
