The Cubs have been toying around with the idea of an official mascot for a long time now, being that they were one of the last few MLB teams without one. And now he’s here: Clark.

clark the cub

No, he’s not intimidating (nor is he the magnificent DJ Kitty), and, yes, the backwards hat is a bit much. But, all in all, I’ve gotta confess … I don’t hate it. I’m sure it’s a new-ish father in me, but this was an avenue the Cubs had to take, and you knew it was coming with the renovation and all, didn’t you?

Related confession, for those who don’t know, my son’s name is also Clark. When he’s old enough to understand, he’ll probably be tickled pink to know that the Cubs’ mascot shares his name.

You can read more about Clark here, and you can follow him on Twitter here. The jokes will necessarily come over the next few days, and I look forward to cataloging them. And remember, you cynical types: Clark isn’t for you. He’s for the kids. He’s not going to be doing the on-the-dugout shenanigans, and will probably have a relatively low profile, unless you seek him out with your kiddos. The Cubs are pretty sensitive to not disrupting the “feel” of games at Wrigley (at least not more than they have to) – they simply recognize that there’s not a whole lot going on there for families with very young children.

Apparently, Clark’s emergence leaves only the Yankees, Dodgers and Angels as teams without a formal, on-field type mascot. I guess Masahiro Tanaka hates mascots.

So … thoughts? Reactions?

  • Jim

Odds on Clark having a dance-off with DJ Kitty? Cause that’s entertainment right there..

  • NorthSideIrish

I’m loving all the Poochie references on Twitter.

  • Isaac

    Today: Ugh
In a few years when I join daddy land: Awesome!

Why is there a zeppelin tethered to the upper deck?

So people can use the line oh the humanity?

Circuses need more than just clowns.

  • itzscott

    Double UGH

Hats off to the Yankees, Dodgers and Angels for having the corporate discipline to keep cuteness out of major league baseball and keep it in the minors…. which is as far as it needs to go.

    • Voice of Reason

We’re trying to land Tanaka and the finalists are the Yankees, the Dodgers and the Angels.

It’s no wonder why we added a mascot! Tanaka surely wants a mascot in the stands and this will make us different than the Yankees, the Dodgers and the Angels.

It’s simple. This mascot means the Cubs get Tanaka! YYYIIIIIIPPPPPEEEEEE!!

    • hansman

The ICUBS have a mascot and, unless you seek him out or are annoyed by kids being delighted to see him walk the concourse, he is barely noticeable.

But hey, gotta make sure the 5 year Olds in attendance only focus on the field, right!!!!

    • TTH

Actually, the Yankees tried one back in the day.

Hopefully Tanker, Little Jed, or whateverthehell they’re calling this thing suffers the same fate

      • Matt

Why do you hope he suffers the same fate? How does the Cubs having a mascot hurt you? Seems pretty selfish of you.

  • Jon

Since the talent level on the field will represent a minor league team, it’s only fitting they break out a mascot.

  • Cubsklm

I think the Clark signing is a low risk, high reward acquisition.

If he performs well during the first half of the season, we should be able to flip him for a couple of younger, high upside mascots.

Look forward to meeting him in Mesa.

    • DarthHater

I hear Clark has a good chance of making a full recovery from last year’s Smokey Bear surgery. Nice buy-low pickup.

  • itzscott

    The other thing….

The Cubs have legions of fans throughout the world who didn’t need coaxing from some cartoon character to become supporters of the team.

    • http://www.michigangoat.blogspot.com MichiganGoat

It’s not for current fans, it’s not for you, it has nothing to do with anybody on here. I’m guessing you don’t have kids.

      • Matt

This, I’m amazed by some of the mindless responses of people who are actually mad about this. Nobody has to necessarily like it, but if someone is actually unhappy about it, then they need to get their priorities straight. You don’t have to deal with it if you don’t want to, it’s for the kids, not you.

  • TK

I count only 4 people in the stands . . . is this an off-day being depicted? And there’s only A “cub” – singular. Where’s Addison?

    • Isaac

Ha, this is classic….an obvious sign of declining attendance, right?

    • TTH

Must be a September game for the foreseeable future.

    • hansman

Why are the stands purple and why are the fans wearing purple?

Apparently some more branding changes are coming.

        It’s horrible.

        • itzscott

          Totally bush league

  • jrayn

That’s silly. The Angels have mascots, but there’s only one kid who can see them.

  • Cizzle

I thought the Angels’ mascot was that stupid Rally Monkey.

  • TWC

I think this is a wonderful idea, mostly because it’s going to make those Cubs fans who are already disposed to hate all things coming from this front office blow a gasket.

    • willis

This made me laugh because it’s so true. Blood is boiling right now with many.

    • CubFanBob

yep, let them cry I feast off their tears. It’s for kids and even more so the little ones in hospitals when the Cubs do out reaches. I know my twins will love him.

You have all these media types and bloggers raging all over it but really it’s for children. Perspective people, get some !!

    • http://www.michigangoat.blogspot.com MichiganGoat

Isn’t it lovely how a cartoon can piss so many people off,I know my kids think it’s neat and that is great.

    • DarthHater

Maybe the BN comment board should also get a mascot. I nominate Die hard. I’m sure he’ll charm the kiddies!

      • http://www.michigangoat.blogspot.com MichiganGoat

Well we did use to have Duffman Ace but then he went away.

  • http://bleachernation.com woody

This should bring all of the rug rats into the fold.

  • Teigh Cubs Teigh

I’m a non father, and as much as I want to hate this I really can’t. It’s not going to negatively effect most people at all and will provide a positive for a certain demographic.

That being said I still hate the Pirate Parrot from when I was a kid. He terrified the living hell out of me and is the reason that I did not grow up a Pirates fan. When I go to PNC now I still actively avoid that darn bird.

  • http://www.michigangoat.blogspot.com MichiganGoat

Meh who cares… Oh yeah my kids. They love the minor league team here in Grand Rapids (did you here it caught on fire and burned down a week or so ago?) and especially the mascots and I’m sure Jr will be getting a Clark for his birthday this year.

  • http://www.facebook.com/cubman87 cubman87

My 8 year old son loves it!!! Target audience reached!!!!

    • http://fullcount1544.blogspot.com FullCountTommy

DING DING DING!! 20-40 year old Twitter users and BN readers were not who the Cubs were thinking about when they came up with this

  • TTH

At least now we’ll know what Jed Hoyer does.

  • Jon

If only they were 1/2 as concerned on fielding a quality MLB team as they are these stupid gimmicks, they might be able to field a team that wins 70 games.

  • Chuck24

Like the mascot, the Cubs aren’t very intimidating and have been the National League’s official mascot for the last four seasons…so why not? If they want to be more fan friendly, how about lowering ticket prices in at least one section of the park so that the average family of four doesn’t kill its budget trying to watch a Triple-A team play? Even the Reds, who are an actual contender, have a “Top Six” program….in the top six rows of the stadium, the tickets are just six bucks each.

  • Blackhawks1963

I suppose I overreacted to this crap. I guess it is geared to the kids, so fine. But the optics of this in year 5 of the Ricketts fumbling along on things of strategic importance (renovation, payroll ability, etc) is awful. Hopefully Ricketts and Kenney Crane didn’t spend more than an ounce of their managerial time on this crap.

    • http://www.michigangoat.blogspot.com MichiganGoat

Yup Ricketts has ignored everything else because he was focused on this, that makes sooo much sense. We suck because all the FO and Ricky did was sit around and talk about mascots. Do you ever get tired of your pessimism?

    • baldtaxguy

Way too much greatness in one post, this is by far the best of the lot. Every word is a gem, but my favorite line?

“I guess it is geared to the kids, so fine.”

      Golden goodness.

I tell you what…ICUB games are complete cap when he is around.

  • PDX Cubs Fan

Are we headed to an animated TV series!

  • brainiac

    he ate the payroll

  • Elliott

Might as well schedule Bark in the Park while we’re at it.

  • JCubs79

Good to know where the money is going towards this off-season.

  • fortyonenorth

“…my son’s name is also Clark”

And your daughter’s name is Addison, yes?

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

      Couldn’t make that one happen.

(And, in truth, we landed on Clark not necessarily as an homage to the Cubs – I mentioned it on a long list of possible names (inspired by the street), and The Wife liked it.)

  • waffle

    oh sheesh.

those things usually scare the kids as much as they entertain them.

  • Greg

Why aren’t more people outraged to the fact that a Bear broke out of the Lincoln Park Zoo, and no one was warned until now?!
