cubs park springBaseball! No, it isn’t the playoffs. Or the regular season. Or even Spring Training. But it’s baseball, dagnabbit.

Today, the Chicago Cubs will square off against the Chicago Cubs in a six inning affair. Pitching prospects Kyle Hendricks and Eric Jokisch will get the starts, with Arodys Vizcaino, Armando Rivero, Chang-Yong Lim, Neil Ramirez, Tsuyoshi Wada, Brian Schlitter and Marcus Hatley also potentially seeing action on the mound.

The lineups (I may have made up the team names):

Team Zack Attack

  1. Luis Valbuena, 3B
  2. Junior Lake, CF
  3. Starlin Castro, SS
  4. Nate Schierholtz, RF
  5. Ryan Roberts, DH
  6. Darnell McDonald, LF
  7. Chris Valaika, 1B
  8. Darwin Barney, 2B
  9. John Baker, C

Team Slater’s Raiders

  1. Emilio Bonifacio, 2B
  2. Justin Ruggiano, RF
  3. Anthony Rizzo, 1B
  4. Ryan Sweeney, CF
  5. Welington Castillo, DH
  6. Donnie Murphy, 3B
  7. Javier Baez, SS
  8. George Kottaras, C
  9. Chris Coghlan, LF

Overreactions: OMG Junior Lake in center! (But also Ryan Sweeney in center.) OMG Chris Coghlan and Darnell McDonald as the “next” outfielders! OMG Welington Castillo isn’t catching yet after his knee procedure last year! OMG Mike Olt not starting! OMG Luis Valbuena leading off! OMG JAVIER BAEZ!!!

Now that we’ve got that out of our system …

There’s very little to actually be gleaned from these lineups, though I do think it’s nice to see Lake getting a shot in center field. Today’s benches include pretty much everyone else in big league camp, so there’s a chance that many of the guys not in the starting lineup will get an at bat or two.

There’s no video of today’s game because most of the Cubs fan world is not as insane as we are, and there may not be a market for it. Hopefully we’ll be able to follow along on Twitter, and you can feel free to share what you see in the comments.

The banner ad stuff is garbage. Either sold cartoon sex crap or something about body sores. Can this crap be cleaned up do include less offensive ad material? I get it that this is to subsidize the site. But c’mon.

    • Jon

I think it’s based on your browsing history……

      • JadeBos

It is. I have one for books I look at on amazon. Something you wanna tell us BH63?!

      • Scombs

A lot of it is, but definitely not all of it. I get the same weird body sore one, and I can’t for the life of me figure out why it’s there. That one, in particular, I find annoying, but it doesn’t slow me down from reading as much as I can on this site!

      • johnnyp

Haha! I get insurance and video games. No body sores or cartoon porn. Yikes…

      • Dustin S

I’ve had the same issue. I go to a lot of videogaming sites, but that shouldn’t explain me getting soft-core porn cartoon rpg-game ads. No more quick checks of BN at work on breaktime or lunch for me sadly til that changes.

As for baseball, so glad it’s back even in the ST form. I’m happy with seeing some other teams on MLBN today and finally our Cubbies for the first ST game tomorrow. Hard to imagine the first real game coming in a month with us in the frozen tundra now. Those April games might be a bit chilly.

      • Fishin Phil

I keep getting ads for some cream to prevent Emerald Ash Borers. Go figure.

        • ChrisFChi

I’m getting ads for White Sox tickets. Seriously WTF is that about?

        • Jon

For me it’s non stop xanax ads, wtf!?!?!?

          • ssckelley

I am getting hot single asian women. Oh and dating women over 50, WTF!!!

            • ChrisFChi

Send the single Asian ladies this way 😉

        • DocPeterWimsey

Sounds like a beauty product for Ents.

          • DarthHater

            and puppets

    • ssckelley

Soooo you are into cartoon sex? You enjoy Charlie Brown making out with Lucy?

      • Funn Dave

        I coulda told you that.

    • Darth Ivy

Go to the Cubs online shop and click on few hats. Do this every few days and you’ll get much more appropriate ads. (but yeah, a lot of the ads are not dependent on your browser history. I get that body sore one, too. I never browse health sites or whatever)

    • Brandon

I keep getting security warnings saying that this site is not safe. I have to hit continue 3 or 4 times before I can even get on here.

      • Jon

Your browser is protecting you against DieHard’s posts.

    • MichiganGoat

I get a lot of beer supplies and master degree programs. Rarely to I see what you are complaining about but those companies pay for the advertising and you can block and edit what you see. Some of the ads are static but it’s not for the sites your complaining about.

  • MightyBear

I think the best thing I’ve heard about this intrasquad game is that both Bryant and Soler walked.

    • ruby2626

Not really, be more impressive if it were Baez and Almora.

    • Napercal

Whoever walked them should be sent to the minors because their WHIP will skew the PECOTA negatively and they now project to a negative WAR. Either that or trade them.

  • Jon

    Gordon Wittenmyer
Lineup for Thursday’s Cactus League opener vs. Arizona.

    • Jon

Clearly Olt is on his way out the door as BH1963 said

      • ssckelley

Must have been that walk he took today. Gotta earn the spot!

  • Funn Dave

Holy shit, does it feel good to see “pre-gamin'” in an article again. And the best thing about this game: the Cubs can’t lose!

    • TommyK

Actually, the Cubs are guaranteed to lose (unless it’s a tie).

      • Funn Dave

Nope. Whichever team loses is the Cubbie Impersonators.

  • mjhurdle

The most important thing I need to know about this intrasquad games is: Has Renteria done anything that we can over-react to and bring up the rest of the year as if he does it all the time when he only ever did it in a ST game?

    • TWC

Well, he did let the opposing team get four outs in the first inning…

  • ssckelley

    CUBS WIN!!!!! 5-3

Go Cubs go, go Cubs goooooo

    • Q-Ball

Wait, I thought we lost 5-3…..

  • Leo the Lip

Was somebody put on the 60 day DL for having body sores?

  • farmerjon

Nothing like a little baseball to lighten the mood around here ; )

  • mjhurdle

the fact that i have mlb tv on and haven’t touched the remote in 3 hours is awesome.

but not as awesome as Reddick (A’s) robbing Morse (Giant’s) of HRs by climbing the fence TWICE in one game.

    i love baseball

    • MichiganGoat

I know it’s an amazing thing- BASEBALL ON THE TV & RADIO!

  • Scombs

Brett – random aside since it’s unofficially the start of the baseball season today.

I don’t know if you’ve seen it yet, but Buster Olney has ranked the difficulty of early schedules for NL and AL teams, and the Cubs have the toughest early-season schedule in the NL. *sigh*

    • DarthHater

That’s because all the other teams get to play against the Cubs. 😛

      • Funn Dave

    • MichiganGoat

Obligatory blah blah blah… this is why the Cubs should have signed more players and traded for a competitive team so we could have a chance… blah blah blah.

  • Scombs

Can someone please remind me how the process works to get an avatar? I don’t see an option through the Edit Profile link.

Go to use same email there you use here. Very easy but takes a few minutes to work.

  • Blackhawks1963

I wonder if we eventually see a spring training deal with the Yankees involving Barney, Valbuena and a relief pitcher. Yankees are looking for cheap help.

    • Javier Bryant

Yankees already have their own Darwin Barney in Brendan Ryan. Although I think they could still be interested in Barney and I was thinking about something similar too

    • MichiganGoat

But what do the Yankees have the Cubs want? If the Yankees give up anymore of the miserable farm system for a couple of fringe starters and this was a Yankees blog would we be happy?

      • Javier Bryant

Trade pocket lint for pocket lint. It’s not like we’re talking trading Samardzija to NY. Barney and Alberto Cabrera for the ambidextrous pitcher haha. I’m sure they have an intriguing arm or two.

      • SenorGato

JR Murphy comes to mind. Cubs lack catching prospects while the Yankees have somewhat of a logjam there with McCann there and Cervelli out of options. I don’t dislike Cervelli either, but Murphy is cheap and prospect so I figured he worked better. Nik Turley would be an arm I’m interested in along with Murphy.

        • MichiganGoat

Not familiar with that prospect but a good catching prospect seems like something the Yankees would want to keep not give up for a bad hitting defensive player.

  • YourResidentJag

The Cubs are also on MLBNetwork March 1 at 12am CT against the Angels.
