cubs park springBaseball! No, it isn’t the playoffs. Or the regular season. Or even Spring Training. But it’s baseball, dagnabbit.

Today, the Chicago Cubs will square off against the Chicago Cubs in a six inning affair. Pitching prospects Kyle Hendricks and Eric Jokisch will get the starts, with Arodys Vizcaino, Armando Rivero, Chang-Yong Lim, Neil Ramirez, Tsuyoshi Wada, Brian Schlitter and Marcus Hatley also potentially seeing action on the mound.

The lineups (I may have made up the team names):

Team Zack Attack

  1. Luis Valbuena, 3B
  2. Junior Lake, CF
  3. Starlin Castro, SS
  4. Nate Schierholtz, RF
  5. Ryan Roberts, DH
  6. Darnell McDonald, LF
  7. Chris Valaika, 1B
  8. Darwin Barney, 2B
  9. John Baker, C

Team Slater’s Raiders

  1. Emilio Bonifacio, 2B
  2. Justin Ruggiano, RF
  3. Anthony Rizzo, 1B
  4. Ryan Sweeney, CF
  5. Welington Castillo, DH
  6. Donnie Murphy, 3B
  7. Javier Baez, SS
  8. George Kottaras, C
  9. Chris Coghlan, LF

Overreactions: OMG Junior Lake in center! (But also Ryan Sweeney in center.) OMG Chris Coghlan and Darnell McDonald as the “next” outfielders! OMG Welington Castillo isn’t catching yet after his knee procedure last year! OMG Mike Olt not starting! OMG Luis Valbuena leading off! OMG JAVIER BAEZ!!!

Now that we’ve got that out of our system …

There’s very little to actually be gleaned from these lineups, though I do think it’s nice to see Lake getting a shot in center field. Today’s benches include pretty much everyone else in big league camp, so there’s a chance that many of the guys not in the starting lineup will get an at bat or two.

There’s no video of today’s game because most of the Cubs fan world is not as insane as we are, and there may not be a market for it. Hopefully we’ll be able to follow along on Twitter, and you can feel free to share what you see in the comments.

    Lets go, Cubbies! err, wait…

  • jp3

    YESSSSSS!!!!! Baseball!

  • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

Hendricks put down Valbuena (fly out, CF), Lake (struck out swinging), and Castro (grounder to short) in order in the top of the first.

  • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

And then to prove it’s not a real game (or anything resembling it), Hendricks also faced Schierholtz and got him to ground out. The old 1-2-3-4 first inning.

    • Scombs

Haha, awesome. Is there anywhere else to follow the game other than Twitter?

      • http://www.michigangoat.blogspot.com MichiganGoat

Only in head of a madman obviously- 4 OUTS AN INNING!

    • http://www.michigangoat.blogspot.com MichiganGoat

WHAT 4 outs in an inning the Cubs are both amazing and suck in the same inning, so do we get an additional out or did we give an additional out. Dogs and cats living together…

    • ssckelley

I blame the umpires. They obviously cannot keep track of how many outs there are in an inning.

  • jp3

Does that make Hendricks era negative….the universe just broke

    • ClevelandCubsFan

No. Greg Maddux remains the all time leader and only player with any ranking in that esoteric statistic: RAWP – runs acquired while pitching.

  • MightyBear

    Hendricks!

  • jp3

Another question is who the hell is john baker? How’d he get invited over koye hill?

  • Corey C

Now, I’ll only be happy if the Cubs turn a quadruple play.

  • ssckelley

I think Lake should have been given a 4th strike.

    • Blackhawks1963

I remain pessimistic on Lake’s ability to hit at this level. I would like for him to prove me wrong but I’m not banking on it.

      • http://bleachernation.com woody

I wish you would be wrong for just one time. I hope you are on this one.

  • Blackhawks1963

Olt is fighting for a roster spot. It’s pretty clear to me that Renteria views Valbuena as the incumbent 3rd baseman for now. People need to chill on Olt for now. He’s got to prove he belongs. And he’s going to have to beat out Valbuena.

    • ssckelley

Any other tidbits you picked up from this intrasquad spring training game? Perhaps Spellcheck not starting means he is going to be traded?

      • http://bleachernation.com woody

Spellcheck is scheduled to pitch tomorrow. Why would they pitch him today????????

        • Blackhawks1963

She believes Spellcheck should pitch every game. In between of course sharing her continual potshots at me. Ain’t she a dandy?

          • http://bleachernation.com woody

Whoops, I thought she was a he.

                It’s not she-view time yet!

                • ssckelley

Sorry, I had to give Woody a….errrrr…..nvm

                  • Funn Dave

                    Ahahaha. Goddamn.

                    • johnnyp

You’re gonna give him a big new banner to post about.

              • http://bleachernation.com woody

                OMG

  • Edwin

Cubs are well on their way to being a .500 team.

  • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

Jokisch couldn’t pull off the same feet – got the first three (FO CF, K, K), but then gave up a groundball single to Sweeney. Castillo then grounded out to second.

    • ssckelley

      There went the no no.

      • Corey C

        Cut him.

    • cubs2015

      Sweeney All Star 2014! ;)

  • Scombs

I’m kind of liking this idea of 6-inning, 4-out baseball. Could speed up games while simultaneously increasing scoring (potentially garnering more interest from the young crowd)…

    • C. Steadman

Cubs are playing by these rules to get their prospects used to 4out 6inning games bc the new commissioner will change the rules in 2015 to bring more excitement to baseball… -shit diehard would say

  • college_of_coaches

Who is Mr. Belding going to root?

    • ssckelley

Team Slater’s Raiders! They got Baez!!!!

  • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

Hendricks gets Roberts on a grounder to short, McDonald on a swinging strike, Valaika on a swinging strike, and Barney on a grounder to second.

  • CubChymyst

@EricLPauly is a guy on twitter updating at bats

    • ssckelley

      @bleedcubbieblue is another (Al Yellon).

  • Blackhawks1963

Hendricks probably gets serious time with the Cubs in 2013. Rotation is scary and I’ve got to believe guys like Hendricks and Grimm will eventually get a crack to see what they can do.

    • Javier Bryant

I could see Hendricks getting some starts after they presumably trade Hammel and Shark

      • JadeBos

After these first two innings of intersquad I could see Hendricks being the opening day starter.

    • johnnyp

Rotation is scary? I bet the Cards are already trembling. Probably forfeit a game or two.

      • frank

There are a couple ways to interpret “scary” in this context . . .

  • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

Jokisch gets Murphy and Baez to strike out, gives up a single to Kottaras, and then gets Coghlan to ground out. I guess three outs were enough this time around.

    • Javier Bryant

I think I saw on Twitter that it’s about the pitch count

    • hansman

BAEZ K’D?!!?!?!?! I WAS RIGHT!!! HE IS A BUM!!!!

      • Chad

        Trade him for Campana!!!!!!!!

      • DarthHater

And Jokisch is now the number one prospect in baseball!

        • hansman

Quick, trade Baez before folks realize he sucks.

        • Porkslap

          Jock Itch FTW

  • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

Valbuena hits a double off the wall, and Lake singles him home. This is coming against Lim, who came in for Hendricks.

    • Hee Seop Chode

      Did Hendricks allow a hit?

      • J. L.

No. Pitched two perfect (4-out) innings.

  • http://bleachernation.com woody

Go Junior go ! There have been a lot of people talkin smack about you.

    • hansman

“Go Junior go ! There have been a lot of people pointing out that you had a BABIP that was most likely unsustainable last year and that it’s regression towards a more likely BABIP will result in you getting on base fewer times (something that you will naturally struggle with outside of making contact) and therefore means that you will need to be able to man CF in order to retain a starting gig on the Cubs since your OPS will more resemble a decent CF than a decent LF.”

      FTFY

      • http://bleachernation.com woody

I apologise man I have been drinking the Junior Lake Kool-Aid and I just haven’t been able to stop. Maybe I head to rehab, I just don’t know.

      • Jon

Do I need to break out my flow chart?

  • hansman

“There’s no video of today’s game because most of the Cubs fan world is not as insane as we are, and there may not be a market for it.”

I bet a video of this game would get 100,000 views.

  • D-Rock

I just hope these 4 out innings don’t screw up Castro even more!

    • Patrick W.

Nothing negative about thinking there’s still 1 out to go! They should always play like that.

    • johnnyp

What? Now they could be thinking they’ve got two more outs to go with two already gone.

  • NorthSideIrish

    Jesse Rogers ‏@ESPNChiCubs 2m
Bryant handles a grounder at third. He’s entered the game. Lim gets out of it giving up 1.

Bryant and Baez manning the left side together…yes please.

    • NorthSideIrish

      Carrie Muskat ‏@CarrieMuskat 1m
#Cubs core four on field: Almora in CF, Soler in RF, Baez at SS, Bryant at 3B

      Even better…

      • Javier Bryant

        Alcantara at 2nd now too

        • JadeBos

          OMG!!!!!

      • Funn Dave

        *stereotypically girlish squeal*

  • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

Lots of strikeouts today. Pitchers always ahead of the hitters at this time of year.

    • http://www.michigangoat.blogspot.com MichiganGoat

This just in Brett says the Cubs pitching prospects are better than the hitters. Goodbye Bryant & Baez hello pitchers.

  • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

Castillo goes deep off of Wada.

    • ssckelley

Put him down for 20 this year!!!!

      :D

    • Jason P

      Thanks for the updates.

  • Steve

I’m getting chubby listening to all this bazzzzzeball stuff…

    YIPPIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://www.michigangoat.blogspot.com MichiganGoat

Completely non-sequitur but the banner ad has a white sux add for $7 tickets- so no matter how bad the Cubs look they aren’t as desperate for ticket sales as the south side.

    • TommyK

      Wait for it

  • ssckelley

    CV with a homer!!!!!

    • ssckelley

      off of Neil Ramirez

  • http://bleachernation.com woody

I’m waiting for Viscaino to pitch.

    • ssckelley

He just entered the game for Team Blue, Vitters and Szczur are the next 2 up.

    • J. L.

      He just got in.

  • ssckelley

Ramirez is having a rough time, Brett Jackson got a hit off of him along with Jeudy Valdez, and a wild pitch scored Jackson. Nobody out yet.

    • JadeBos

Guess the Garza trade wasn’t so great afterall =( (green font or whatever the sarcasm font is)
