tempe-diablo-stadiumThe Cubs travel to Tempe to take on the Angels this afternoon in the second game of the Cactus League season. Chris Rusin gets the start as he battles for the 5th spot in the rotation, assuming (and I am now assuming) Jake Arrieta won’t be ready in time for the start of the season. One of the men he’s battling, James McDonald, is scheduled to follow Rusin today.

Today’s game is available via audio on WGN Radio (Pat Hughes and Ron Coomer) and Cubs.com, and you can watch on MLB.tv if you’ve got that.

… and you might want to watch if you’re able, because Javier Baez will be starting at shortstop.

The lineup:

  1. Chris Coghlan, DH
  2. Darwin Barney, 2B
  3. Ryan Sweeney, CF
  4. Nate Schierholtz, RF
  5. Donnie Murphy, 3B
  6. Casper Wells, LF
  7. Javier Baez, SS
  8. George Kottaras, C
  9. Chris Valaika, 1B

Carrie Muskat says that Kris Bryant is on the travel roster for today, by the way, so he might see some action.

Cool to hear Pat Hughes say names like: “Baez, Almora, Soler, and now Bryant”. Sounds like Almora had a nice double.

  • CubChymyst

This inning was worth the listening to the whole game

  • cubbiekoolaid2015

Bryant works a 3-2 count fouling off a few pitches before he smashes a 2 run home run! Beautiful swings on balls on the outer edge.

    • D-Rock

Sounded awesome. Can’t wait to see that Wrigley, hopefully later this year!

      • Napercal

Sure is a lot better than listening about Donnie Murphy and Caspar Wells

  • CubChymyst

    Yes, HR Bryant

  • jonred

There is joy in Cubville! Please fast forward to next year when we’ll see Alcantara, Almora, Soler and Bryant is the same lineup…

    • Ben

      Forgetting someone? ;)

  • Dales Fired Ear

AHH KRIS BRYANT 13-3 BLOWOUTS HAVE NEVER BEEN SO AWESOME

  • Javier Bryant

Listening to that alone was awesome

    • ssckelley

I didn’t hear it, did they say it was long gone or did it barely get over the fence?

      • Dales Fired Ear

I watched it, it was a bomb

        • ssckelley

Awesome, thanks! I can’t wait to see the video of it.

  • ssckelley

Wow, Kris Bryant with a homer in his first ST at bat.

  • another JP

Yardwork by KB!! The legend starts now baby…

    • D-Rock

Too bad we will all have to wait to watch him at Wrigley…

    • JM

Legend? Think that may be a bit premature? Let’s not try to add any undue pressure…

      But I dig the excitement.

Gotta like the Almora, Soler, Bryant run….now Baez.

The Angel’s broadcast was all rah rah about Jarrett Grube’s locating his slider….then bam! Kris “Ding Dong” Bryant.

  • ssckelley

Anybody that does not have mlb.tv, Game Day on mlb.com shows video’s of all the scoring plays. They do take a while to load, the HR by Barney was a blast.

    • ssckelley

MLB just loaded Bryants home run. It was a blast over the centerfield wall.

Can we fast forward to next season? :D

      • DarthHater

Only if you’re living in the Matrix.

  • willis

Love hearing the at bats by the kids…especially the Bryant bomb. Outstanding stuff.

  • ssckelley

Ian Stewart just struck out…..I see he is in regular season form.

    • ssckelley

wow, another former Cub Carlos Pena is trying to make the team as well. I guess the Cubs are not the only team who goes dumpster diving.

      • Noah_I

Nearly every team is trotting out a bunch of has been and never was players in the first few weeks of spring training as NRIs.

        • ssckelley

Of course, that comment was directed at those who freak out over every minor league free agent signing.

  • CubChymyst

Early opinions of Coomer? For me so far not to bad.

    • ssckelley

He sounds annoying, the pitch of his voice will take some getting used to. The content seemed good, I did not get to listen for very long though.

    • JLFord78

Living in ND, I got used to him in the Twins broadcasts. Cubs could’ve gotten a lot worse, trust me.

  • ssckelley

That was an impressive pitching performance by Pimentel (whoever that is), started the inning 2nd and 3rd with no out and got out of it without allowing a run.

  • cubbiekoolaid2015

Vogelbach with a sharp groundout to second. The guy is really not that big. Looks like he could easily handle 1B.

  • cubbiekoolaid2015

Bryant shows a nice, strong arm to get the runner at 1st on a routine play.

    • cubbiekoolaid2015

Another smooth play by Bryant to end the inning. Love the all around game.

  • Diehardthefirst

Too early to say Mariners Injured Tijuana went south for the year and thus is toast…but Shark anybody home ?

    • http://www.michigangoat.blogspot.com MichiganGoat

Lovely by the end of Spring Training only 5 pitchers will still be healthy in Tge Die Hardian Universe. We should take bets on who it will be tomorrow.

      • Diehardthefirst

Theo is running low on chalk adding these names to board wondering which team will make non refusable offer-
