cubs park springThe Cubs play a day-night doubleheader today in split squad action, though one game is on the road … so is it really a doubleheader? The games are threatened by inclement weather, by the way, so it’s possible only one game, or neither game, gets off today.

In the early game against the Giants, Travis Wood will make his Spring debut. There’s no uncertainty about his rotation spot, so he’s just getting his work in. Be safe and be healthy, Travis.

In the later game against the Diamondbacks, Edwin Jackson makes his Spring debut. While, similarly, there’s no doubt about his rotation spot, Jackson is coming off of a disappointing year (albeit one driven by some bad luck), so his Spring will probably be watched a little more closely. Not that we’ll really be able to glean much meaningful stuff.

There will be audio for the game on Cubs.com if you’ve got an audio subscription or MLB.tv (correct me if I’m wrong on that).

There are a lot of prospects projected to be in action today, so of course rain would threaten the day.

The lineup against the Giants:

  1. Arismendy Alcantara, 2B
  2. Luis Valbuena, 3B
  3. Anthony Rizzo, 1B
  4. Justin Ruggiano, CF
  5. Welington Castillo, C
  6. Chris Valaika, SS
  7. George Kottaras, DH
  8. Darnell McDonald, LF
  9. Aaron Cunningham, RF

The lineup against the Diamondbacks:

  1. Emilio Bonifacio, 2B
  2. Junior Lake, CF
  3. Starlin Castro, SS
  4. Ryan Roberts, 1B
  5. Kris Bryant, 3B
  6. Jorge Soler, RF
  7. Mike Olt, DH
  8. Chris Coghlan, LF
  9. Eli Whiteside, C

First of all Brett, Thank You for this site. Can You or anyone here tell me what has happened to Marcelo Carreno? He was the pitcher that came from the Tigers for Jeff Baker in 2012. I believe he was injured all of last year. Is he still part of the Organization?

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

Last I saw, he was still in the organization, but I never read what his injury was. When a guy misses a year like that, Tommy John always seems like a fair bet, but I’m not sure.

    • Jason P

He’s currently listed on the Iowa Cubs roster for what it’s worth.

  • candyland07

Split squad – always like those type of game is spring training>It makes the coaching staff think more about the fundamentals of baseball and a team gets to evaluate twice as many players on any given day

  • APPNATION

Brett, will Baez play half a game in one of these games?

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

Not necessarily, since he played just about the full way yesterday.

  • josh ruiter

I want Alcantara to get as many looks as possible at 2b….imagine a reyes-lite playing 2b…dreamy!! with that type of speed and OBP skill the Cubs could finally settle in with a traditional leadoff man.

  • Funn Dave

Alright, Travis–let’s get that quality start streak started early this year!

  • itzscott

So glad we get to see more of Chris Valaika and Darnell McDonald.

Reminds me of the cowbell skit on SNL….

I got this fever and it can only be cured by Valaika…. I gotta have more Valaika!

    • http://www.michigangoat.blogspot.com MichiganGoat

Could you give me your preferred lineups for today’s split squads? I’m curious what would make you happy.

      • college_of_coaches

Personally, I’d prefer more Vitters and less Darnell M. I’m a bit surprised how little Josh has appeared so far.

  • itzscott

I would if your name was Happy Renteria, but it’s not and you would be wasting as much time reading it as I would typing it.

    • josh ruiter

not as much time as was wasted reading your last two posts.

    • http://www.michigangoat.blogspot.com MichiganGoat

Okay sounds good that allows you to complain freely on every single lineup for the entire year, I leave you be enjoy the spring.

  • itzscott

Well, I guess I just feel that when a team is as bad as the Cubs are right now, everything they do should be as meaningful as possible.

Since you’re a genius, maybe you can enlighten a pea brain, like myself, by explaining how meaningful Valaika and McDonald are to the Cubs now, during the regular season or perhaps in the future?

    • YourResidentJag

      You bile spewer, you. :)

    • http://www.michigangoat.blogspot.com MichiganGoat

Well since we are talking about the 3rd & 4th spring training game I’m not sure what else I should say because it’s quite obvious.

      • itzscott

So you can’t find meaning there either , other than you’re an unquestioning Cub fan and everything they do is okay by you.

        Got it.

        • http://www.michigangoat.blogspot.com MichiganGoat

It spring training it’s the first week what is there to question? Man it must suck to be this hostile this easily, and thank you for using the reply button this time. Let’s wait until a few weeks into ST before we start getting all whinny about lineup constructions.

          • itzscott

            Deal

          • candyland07

The only narrative that can viewed as whinny is your narratives. It seems like everyone else will at times offer opinions and talk baseball even argue and disagree about baseball. But you . you troll and even that is too good of a description. You attack – i see it as annoyance but like a bedbug it gets old and tiresome. id rather read your comments on your thoughts and learn from you rather than just dismiss what you say since its always the same.

idiot, dummy , troll whatever adjectives you seem to come up with. you do your self a disservice by not being a part of the conversation but being a spectacle.of a conversation

            • itzscott

              Examples please.

You must have me confused with some other poster.

              • candyland07

sorry, thought it was obvious – the goat. I really cant seem to find a day that he just converses – all he do is cry – and complains

            • mjhurdle

nothing like a whiny, attacking post because you think someone else is posting posting whiny, attacking posts.

              really setting yourself apart there…

              • candyland07

an echo chamber , but yes today i got sick of the goat – it just means that i could not enjoy other people thoughts and conversations without seeing some of his 2 nd grade humor plaster all around. Most of time i just ignore him.

                • mjhurdle

“Most of time i just ignore him.”

actually, most of the time you respond to his posts just like this example; with the same whiny, attacking tone you accuse him of posting with.

I don’t really care how you post, but you should at least be honest about it.

                  • candyland07

I am honest about it. i direct my comment towards him not a vast majority of people that with same typical of condescending jib jab. But unlike him to anyone else i am just commenting to you without the undertones.

                    • http://www.michigangoat.blogspot.com MichiganGoat

Got buddy we are dead to each other nothing more needs to be said, enjoy the sadness I’ll drink an beer and be happy. Good bye.

              • candyland07

but if you want to defend him – by all means

                • mjhurdle

i am not, and don’t need to, defend MichiganGoat. And nothing in my post mentioned him, either with approval or disapproval.
My post was directed at you and your post, independent of anything else.

                  • candyland07

i can understand why scott was confused but you clearly wanted to defend the goat and i can appreciate your loyalty . id rather just talk about baseball – but if you feel it was necessary to call me out . well then you should be able to feel the same feeling about what i had about goat . this is going in full circle . have a nice day

                    • cavemancubbie

Why don’t we all get a beer from the fridge and chill!

                    • mjhurdle

                      beer + chill = happiness

                      it is a scientific fact.

                    • http://www.michigangoat.blogspot.com MichiganGoat

Yes it is the only fact that cannot be disproven.

                    • DocPeterWimsey

As a scientist, I’ve always wondered what people mean by a “scientific fact”: aren’t facts just sort of facts? (I know that people use the word “theory” completely differently than we do, but it’s never been clear that our use of “fact” is that much different from proper ordinary use of “fact.”)

At any rate, it certainly is a fact that “Happiness” often is reported after “Beer+Chill,” unless you are in the UK where “Happiness” is more often reported after “Beer+LukeWarming.”

Now, what does any of this have to do with our FO’s blatant failures to cheaply acquire every good player in baseball over the last 48 months just like the other 29 teams have all done?

                    • http://www.michigangoat.blogspot.com MichiganGoat

I knew that comment would bring the Doc out of his lab. Beer= Happiness is the only truth in life. FACT!

                    • DocPeterWimsey

Ah, we call that a theory in my world. And unlike, say, gravity, we know the mechanism underlying this!

And this theory affects our lives much more often than, say, evolution or the expanding universe, or even plate tectonics!

Clearly Jed and Theo need to be applying this theory to agents and other FOs. I like the image of Friedman waking up some morning with a mouth feeling like a sock hamper and his arm around some Cubs’ B prospect and realizing that he just gave up Price the night before…..

                    • candyland07

To Doc – it may be silly but i will take a stab – a scientific fact can be disproved by empirical evidence and at times when something that has been stated as scientific fact by using empirical method but later proved to be wrong because a better understanding of whatever science has evolved a better understanding of it to disprove an empirical method of a fact or maybe i am just using priori or posteriori knowledge to baffle my own answer .

                    • DocPeterWimsey

That’s more the way we use “hypothesis” (or a well-corroborated hypothesis). We tend to use “fact” for “data.” Usually when we use the word, it’s to discuss a particular example of data, and often in contrast to general patterns: for example, despite the fact that some women are taller than most men, the data show that the average man is taller than is the average woman; despite the fact that Shawon Dunston drew two walks in one game once, the data show that he had a dreadful batting eye; etc.

It’s just always been sort of funny to me to see this term bandied about (even in jest!) when it’s one we never use!

                      Regardless, beer is good.

                    • ClevelandCubsFan

Think I’d suggest a fact as an empirically observed data point or phenomenon, free of any interpretation, or those interpretations of empirically observed data points and phenomena that have stood up over roughly a bajillion observations.

                  • mjhurdle

you seem to really latch onto ideas and not let them go. Again i would point out that I never mentioned MichiganGoat, you are the one that is doing that. My post was simply pointing out that you might want to refrain from whining and attacking in posts where you are belittling others for whining and attacking. And I stand by that advice.

                    Have a nice day yourself.

                    • brainiac

let’s keep the negative attention focused on me, please

                    • Funn Dave

You said: “nothing like a whiny, attacking post because you think someone else is posting posting whiny, attacking posts.” This was your first post in this thread. You may not have mentioned him by name, but “someone else” is pretty clearly Goat.

                      You also said:
“actually, most of the time you respond to his posts just like this example; with the same whiny, attacking tone you accuse him of posting with.” Again, unless you’re just having fun with pronouns, the referent of “him” is clearly Goat.

Your later comments do mention Goat by name, but it’s pretty abundantly clear by that point that your criticism of Candyland is grounded in his own criticism of Goat, and does not in fact exist in some empty vacuum, void of all context. Yes, your criticism may address what you view as his commenting style as a whole, but it is inarguably rooted in the above exchange b/w Candy and Goat.

  • CubChymyst

Sounds like the 2:05 game is going be delayed for awhile due to a rain. Does not sound promising at all.

  • Ivy Walls

At MLB they are now only broadcasting on the radio the night game. Weather seems strong though not around Mesa

So they have to play Mcdonald until he looks bad enough to get cut? In the mean time Jackson and Vitters sit. I dont like it.

  • itzscott

You do realize that the DBacks are showcasing Archie Bradley to the Cubs tonight 8-)

  • Cizzle

I guess the new park came without drains

    • Cizzle

So the rain check policy sucks for out of towners. No refunds, just a ticket to a latter game. I already have tix for my whole trip, so if someone wants one (Bert gets dibbs) let me know the game and ill leave it at will call. It was a decent ticket ( section 101), so I’m happy to give it away if someone will use it.

      • Cizzle

As an aside, Almora is a hell of a guy. After the game was cancelled, an old lady passed out near the cubs dugout. He talked with her for about 20 minutes after she woke up. Wouldn’t do autographs, just stood at the top of the steps talking with her over the dugout as the paramedics were doing their thing. When they were done, he signed a dozen autographs and went into the tunnel. Last player on the field 30 minutes after the game was cancelled. Good guy. Very impressive for a 20 year old. I really hope he turns out.

        • Funn Dave

Wow. That’s awesome. I mean, that he talked to her; not that she passed out.

        • Ivy Walls

Why I don’t think he is traded, they know his emotional IQ and maturity and that goes further than some other tools, even though he has physical tools.

  • Funn Dave

What, no jokes about how we need to see the results of T. Wood’s simulated 2-inning game so that they can be parsed through with the same scrutiny as the first two ST games? You guys are off your game.

  • http://bleachernation.com woody

In regards to Almora, he is close to both Bryant and Soler. Those three amigos were hanging out during the AFL. Albert has been a positive influence for Soler in making the cultural adjustment to live here in the U.S.A.

Yes and BEER = GOOD that is the only truth/fact/conclusion/observation/evidence one needs in life! There is no discussion needed, no experiment to perform, no hypothesis to test, nothing is necessary. BEER = GOOD is all anyone needs to know the rest of the world is secordary to this one indisputable law.

The secondary law is IPA = BEST but some still haven’t discovered that truth.

Goat, are you going to give us a series beerview this season as I requested last season?

        • http://www.michigangoat.blogspot.com MichiganGoat

Yeah I was just thinking about that and I think it’s something I can do this year but will need some crowd sourcing to help me with some of the states. My biggest issue is finding enough Illinois and specific Chicago brewries to go along with the Cubs. Too bad it’s not Michigan since I’ve got plenty to cover in my state, but it’s absolutely something to do.

Dogfish Head, just about any but especially the 120 minute is mighty hard to beat and probably the best beer I’ve had. Although not a Chicago beer, it’s available here and there around Chicago including on tap.

Two Brothers is also pretty good from the Chicago, not as good as Dogfish but it’s sold at the Kane County Cougars park which gives it bonus points. Cane and Ebel is my favorite from them.

Spaten is a German beer that is thankfully available on tap from a local German brew house. Canned it’s usually a bit old and stale, but on tap is also awfully good.

          • Funn Dave

Try a Satisfaction Jackson Double IPA, from Ale Asylum. Spaten is good shit, too.

        • BlackJeep

I am not a fan of Dogfish Head. I find it very hard to enjoy. My recommendations would be St. Bernardus Prior 8 or Abt 12 which are trappist ales and Founder’s Breakfast Stout which is just yummy. Check them out on Beer Advocate.

          • http://www.michigangoat.blogspot.com MichiganGoat

Oh I know Breakfast Stout and it’s Canadian & Kentucky brethren like they are my own brothers. CBS had a very important part in my wedding and they are always nearby… in fact their ancestral home is about 3 miles nearby. It’s good to be a Michigan based Goat ;)

            • BT

The St. Bernardus is very good but makes it tough to drive home when you are done. A little goes right to your head. Right now I’m drinking an Alpha King, and a Zombie dust is next. Had a Pride and Joy earlier and was very happy with it.

      • Funn Dave

IPAs are great. They’re my favorite type of beer (besides, I guess, DIPAs). Normally, that statement would in truth be but an opinion.

        HOWEVA:

Since I am, essentially, a divine being, my opinion on ale evaluations is not merely an opinion but an absolute Fact. For me to state my opinion is not simply a passive observation, but a declaration of truth that answers to none. Any who does not see the virtue of the IPA is therefore a heretic, doomed to an eternal damnation of No Funn. So revel, Goat, in being a follower of truth. Enjoy the knowledge that while the proponents of porters and stouts wallow forever in a hell full of Cardinal victories and Nattie Ice, and promising prospects who implode after AA, you and I and the true followers of IPAs will be loungin’ in a heaven where the Cubs win it all year after year, and Wrigley serves a variety of intoxicating bitter ales at the modest price of $3.00 a cup.

And tequila, which I myself happen to be enjoying at a thoroughly invigorating pace.

        • http://www.friendly-confines.com hansman

          IPAs are complete dog vomit.

          • Internet Random

There are bad ones out there, but the good ones are as good as beer gets.

            • DarthHater

Too much beer will do that to you.

        • Patrick W.

I’m loving the beer conversation. That said, I don’t really drink beer. I don’t like it anymore. The last time I really enjoyed a beer was in the UK. Seems to me that stuff ruined all beer for me now. I also don’t like any wine but sparkling wine because all wine tastes like vinegar to me.

          • Internet Random

“The last time I really enjoyed a beer was in the UK.”

That’s likely a result of their food being so bad that consuming anything else would be great by comparison.

I like to hit myself on the head with a hammer, because it feels so good when I stop.

(None of that is to say that there aren’t some exceedingly tasty brews that issue from the UK.)

He had to want to come to Chicago. Even if the cubs had offered him a bigger contract with the same opt out clause he still may not have been interested. And with that opt out clause is that something you want? A chance for the guy to opt out when the cubs are competing? Seems like a risky investment to me.

Tickets will be face for that game, but I’m guessing it’ll be one of the few that the tickets go quickly for. Might not sell out, but might not have many cheap seats left after the first hour.
