cubs park springHooray for in-person baseball! I’ll be at Cubs Park today to watch the Cubs take on the Oakland A’s, and also hopefully to snap off some good shots of the facilities. I’ll be sitting/strolling in the lawn area, wearing a blue BN shirt and blue/yellow shoes. If you see me, say hi, because I like to have friends.

You can expect heavy updates on Twitter, and then here at the site later today.

As for the game, pitching prospect – and 2013 Cubs Minor League Pitcher of the Year – Kyle Hendricks will get his first Spring start. There will be audio for the game on Cubs.com.

Lineup:

  1. Emilio Bonifacio, SS
  2. Donnie Murphy, 3B
  3. Anthony Rizzo, 1B
  4. Justin Ruggiano, LF
  5. Ryan Sweeney, CF
  6. Casper Wells, RF
  7. Nate Schierholtz, DH
  8. Darwin Barney, 2B
  9. Eli Whiteside, C

Maybe the prospect contingent will get into the game later …

  • Jon

Does a scrub like Casper Wells really have a legit shot of making the roster? I think I would be more inclined to see if anything is there with Vitters, not saying its likely, but he’s still only 24 and has hit well at AAA.

    • Johnny Chess

How are the Cubs going to evaluate players like Wells if they never give them a start?
Let the coaches juggle their line ups in a way that allows bubble players to showcase their talents/flaws.

      • Jon

A player like Casper Wells doesn’t need to be evaluated. He’s got nothing to offer.

    • D-Rock

Jon, who are you rooting for today since you are an A’s fan who also follows the Cubs closely?

      • Jon

The joke is getting old, emo.

        • TimBeam

But seriously, who on the A’s are you most looking forward to seeing this year?

          • Jon

Kazmir, it will be interesting to see what Cespedes does in his 3rd year and if Donaldson can repeat that season he pulled out of his ass.

            • C. Steadman

not gonna lie if i had to chose an AL team it’d be either the A’s or Rays, i wanted Cubs to sign Kaz…i’m a fan of Coco

  • JCubs79

I know it’s Spring Training and this isn’t a freak out or an over reaction but that lineup makes me vomit just looking at it.

  • willis

Much like yesterday, I’m very interested in the starting pitcher in this one. Jokisch had a very good day for himself yesterday, let’s see if Hendricks can do the same.

  • BlameHendry

Why aren’t we seeing Olt getting more playing time? It seems like he hasn’t gotten anything at all…

    • BlameHendry

Edit: I know about his shoulder. I’m wondering why we aren’t at least seeing him in a DH role.

    • V23

Exactly. Let’s “see” if eyes are fixed!!
Olt should be getting a lot of AB’s.

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

He just started yesterday in the B game. Guys don’t usually play back to back games this time of year. Lots to work on and the games are only one part.

      • half_full_beer_mug

B.S. The only things that matter are the fake games and what random people on the internet say.

        • DocPeterWimsey

And robots. Don’t forget the robots.

  • V23

If Baez is the best SS on your roster, why isn’t he getting a shot to break with the team (with Castro hurt)?

Jeez, no Vitters, no Alcantara….it’s like they are TRYING to be hostile to fans and the future.

    • YourResidentJag

Well, once the feed is up from 670theScore, I’ll link to it and have Theo tell you.

    • Cubz99

Baez has been starting or getting significant playing time at SS for the last several games. No player starts every game the first week in the spring. I’m sure they want to get a look at Bonifacio and see how he does.

That is one horrendous lineup though.

      • Eternal Pessimist

I really don’t care to see Bonifacio at SS. I would prefer to see either Castro or Baez get 100% of that time so we can get the Castro trade (hopefully) and Baez’s abilities figured out. Bonifacio should be an afterthought. Give him some time at 2B. He is the least likely to have long term impact on the teams future.

        • http://www.friendly-confines.com hansman

Castro is injured and Baez played 2 days in a row. No sense in logging too many innings too close together this early.

          • Eternal Pessimist

Not sure what the hell I was saying, but I meant Barney, not Castro.

    • http://www.friendly-confines.com hansman

Because Castro is on track to be back well before Opening Day.

And unless every SS the Cubs have is injured for Opening Day, he will not be the Cubs Opening Day SS or 2B or 3B or OF or SP or C.

  • Cubbie in NC

Brett not the most exciting lineup they could put on the field for you. They might not have gotten the message that you are going to be there in person…

  • DocPeterWimsey

I am oddly green right now.

  • Brandon

I thought Barney was going to get playing time at ss. Its ST, they should switch Barney and Bonifacio. IMO.

  • newsguy23

Pleasure to see Murphy starting at 3b

  • willis

Hendricks oddly had a little control issue today, but he limited the damage. Good experience for him.

  • C. Steadman

that Burns is the A’s version of Tony Campana

  • Funn Dave

Hey, thanks to whoever posted the Shelby Miller story in the comments earlier. Does anyone know if the Cards have made any statements since then regarding his lack of postseason usage?

  • Jon

So far in today’s game, Both Ruggiano and Rizzo look good. Jonathan Sanchez got taken behind the woodshed. Ruggiano had a bomb. Maybe that crazy Oliver projection for him isnt’ that far off.

    • C. Steadman

I’m a huge fan of Ruggiano, if he wasn’t going to platoon he could have a shot at a 20/20 year, maybe fall a couple SB short, but would finish closer to 30 with HR

      • ssckelley

I think he will see plenty of at bats, possibly even as the starting left fielder. I cannot see the Cubs starting both Lake and Sweeney in the outfield every day. The Cubs desperately need a right handed slugger in left field and hopefully Ruggiano can be that guy.

  • NorthSideIrish

Apparently Olt saw that one just fine…

    • half_full_beer_mug

A blind Olt can hit a homer every now and again.

      • another JP

Sounds more like your mug is half empty after that comment.

        • half_full_beer_mug

Either that, or my sarcasm font didn’t show up ;)

            Mike Olt!

            • half_full_beer_mug

not sure that worked out the way you intended

              • https://twitter.com/dwoytek dw8

i know. i suck at life.

  • willis

Almora hitting a single scoring Szczur who had gotten on base and stolen second…oh those words make me smile.

    • half_full_beer_mug

If only Vitters hadn’t TOOTBLAN’d right before that

  • Jason P

Even though it was right down the middle, it’s nice to see Olt crush one.

    • https://twitter.com/dwoytek dw8

One thing good baseball players due is hit mistakes out of the park.

      • https://twitter.com/dwoytek dw8

        ugh do

  • willis

Home run Olt. Yessir. That’s neat to see….uh hear.

    • Jason P

I hope someone caught it on video!

  • http://bleachernation.com woody

Olt hits two run homer. Cubs lead six to three.

  • another JP

How awesome is it that Olt hits one out after a big RBI by Almora? I could get used to that…

  • http://bleachernation.com woody

    Hopefully he starts hitting now.

  • salesguy

    Thank you Texas!

  • ssckelley

Olt must have been on here reading what Blackhawks has been saying about him. :D

I am happy for the guy, if Olt can return to his 2012 form the Cubs will have awesome depth at 3rd base.

  • half_full_beer_mug

So Schlitter pulls a Garza? Then Szcur pulls a Bradley/Jones? Result is runners at second and third?

  • half_full_beer_mug

In other news, Cubs win the meaningless fake game 6-4 with a nice game by two of the projected regulars and with a rally by the prospects.

  • Blackhawks1963

    Obervations…

    1. Sure looks like Josh Vitters has devolved into the class of the Caspar Wells / Donnie Murphys of the world in the eyes of the leadership brass

    2. Mike Olt still not playing (not even DHing) is not good at all for him to make his case for making this roster

    • half_full_beer_mug

      Understandings

      1. Blackhawks1963 has no idea what is going on.

      2. Blackhawcks1963 likes to read what he types.

    • Noah_I

It kind of hurts the meaningfulness of your observations when Olt came in as the DH midway through the game and hit a 2 run home run.

      • half_full_beer_mug

        see number one above

      • Blackhawks1963

Didn’t start. Starting to think the Cubs don’t see him breaking camp. Or at least not as the starting 3rd baseman. You can take potshots all you want at unfolding events.

        • half_full_beer_mug

I guess Wellington needs to start packing his bags for Iowa as well then since he didn’t start either.

Maybe this is the first time you were let out of the hospital to watch spring training games, but very rarely does a starting lineup have anything to do with the managements perceived 25 man roster and mostly about getting everyone the required work/AB/IP needed to be ready for opening day.

          • BT

No, blackhawk is right. I remember thinking the writing was on the wall last year when Logan Watkins started at 2nd for 3 out of the first 4 spring games, and we can all agree that Darwin Barney never ended up in the Cubs plans for 2014, right?

            • http://www.michigangoat.blogspot.com MichiganGoat

Nothing like over reacting to the first week of ST, it’s been quite amusing to see everyone reading so much into the first week meaningless games.

    • mjhurdle

I am truly amazed at how much wrong you fit into one short post…

    • http://www.friendly-confines.com hansman

Remember when folks were chastised about making fun of overreactions?

Viterbo and Olt are long shots to make the opening day roster and their playing time in spring will have no bearing on their making the roster.

Although, right now there is a 0% chance you won’t say that you called it on March 4th.

  • ssckelley

    Obervations…

    1. Wellington Castillo days are probably numbered and Baker will be our starting catcher. Baker already has 5 at bats this spring and is batting .600 while Castillo only has 1 hit in 4 at bats.

    2. Junior Lake has a good chance at being DFA’d since he is hitless in 4 at bats. The brass clearly do not see much value in Lake. Unfortunately his time has probably passed.

    • http://bleachernation.com woody

      Your observations are very premature.

      • DocPeterWimsey

But her sarcasm is quite on the mark!

        • ssckelley

Doc, you turn me on talking about me like that.
