Ted Lilly rode off into the sunset this offseason as a baseball player, but he’s turning his horse around to return as a front office man.
Today the Cubs named Lilly a special assistant in the front office, where he’ll assist – specially – Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer. Candidly, I heard about this move a month or so ago, but I couldn’t get any confirmation. Fiddlesticks. But I’ll salve my disappointment as a writer with my happiness as a fan: it’s good to have Lilly back in the fold.
We don’t know much about him as a front office type, but, if history has proved much, Theo and Jed tend to know what they’re doing when it comes to front office hires. So, on that basis alone, Lilly is probably a pretty bright, capable dude.
UPDATE: the press release details Lilly’s duties a little bit, “In his new role with the organization, Lilly will spend time with the club during spring training, visit the club’s minor league affiliates during the season, evaluate amateur players leading up to the draft and perform professional scouting assignments.”
