cubs park shoesThe Brewers come to Cubs Park today an hour later than they would have yesterday. That’s because Arizona is weird, and their time didn’t change today. So those 2:05pm CT games are all now 3:05pm CT games. Today’s is on Cubs.com (audio), if you’d like to listen in.

Kyle Hendricks gets his second Spring start, which is a mild surprise to me, given the theoretical other number of competitors the Cubs have for not only the roster, but the back-end of the rotation. If Hendricks is absolutely being sent to AAA to start the year, as the Cubs have indicated, I suppose it’s a high compliment that he continues to draw starts.

The lineup finally features something I’ve been waiting for: both Ryan Sweeney and Junior Lake. And the guy in center field is … Lake. I suppose there remains a tiny chance that Lake heads to AAA Iowa to start the year to continue working at center field, but I’m thinking he’s the guy there in Pittsburgh on Opening Day for the Cubs. As I’ve said a number of times before, in center field, Lake has the potential to be an above-average regular. In left field, I’m not sure that would ever be the case. In a season like this, might as well see what kind of value Lake can create for himself (and the organization) in center.

Oh, and Javy Baez is starting at shortstop, but no one cares about that, right?

Lineup:

  1. Matt Szczur, LF
  2. Luis Valbuena, 3B
  3. Anthony Rizzo, 1B
  4. Justin Ruggiano, DH
  5. Ryan Sweeney, RF
  6. Javier Baez, SS
  7. Junior Lake, CF
  8. George Kottaras, C
  9. Darwin Barney, 2B
  • Rebuilding

The Cardinals have signed Aledmys Diaz

    • Rebuilding

It’s being reported as a 4 year deal in the $5-7mil per year range

    • Funn Dave

      But..but…MOAR SHORTSTOPS!

  • Assman22

Draft porn from BA…”Tyler Beede (7 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 9 K) in Vandy’s 9-1 win. Beede, a leading candidate for the national player of the year award and a likely top-five overall pick, improved to 4-0, 1.08 with 33 strikeouts and five walks in 25 innings. He has allowed just 11 hits.”…will be a deep draft for quality arms (barring any more major injuries)…the forgotten man “Oregon State lefthander Ben Wetzler returned from his 11-game suspension for violating the NCAA’s “no agent” rule last Sunday with 7 2/3 innings of one-run ball against Wright State. He outdid himself Friday, striking out a career-high 12 over eight innings of one-hit, shutout ball, leading the Beavers to a 6-0 win against Northern Illinois.”…

Beede being awesome (along with Hoffman and Rodon) can only be good for the Cubs. Even if those guys went 1-2-3, then the Cubs would have their choice of Turner, Kolek, Jackson, among others.

      • Kyle

It definitely seems like there will be plenty to choose from at 4.

      • Assman22

So so early to project but whatever…Cubs really need a college pitcher to fall to 4…McLeod is a big fan of Jackson…Kolek could sneak into the top 3 with his projection…jury is still out on Hoffman in my mind…if the draft was today, Rodon/Beede go 1-2…wide open from there…

        • Serious Cubs Fan

Kolek could have the highest ceiling out of any pitcher in this draft. Only problem is more risk w/HSer and would most likely take longer to develop in the minors

      • ssckelley

I vote Jackson at #4, he has a ton of power and may even stick at catcher.

    • NorthSideIrish

Was really hoping Beede would be available at 1.4 but is looking increasingly less likely. Hoffman had a rough outing yesterday and has been slightly less impressive than Beede this season. Long way to go though.

      • Assman22

Tons of sleeper arms…Wetzler, Nola, Imhof, Robichaux, etc…any of which could jump into the top 5…

        • NorthSideIrish

Nola and Beede are facing each other Friday night. Should be a great duel.

          • Assman22

FWIW, the White Sox have drafted a college player with their first overall selection in 12 of their past 13 drafts…took HS OF in 2012…IIRC they were not able to sign their top pick last draft…haven’t had a solid MLB player come from their top selection in quite some time outside of Sale of course…Marlins track record however is all over the place…

        • TulaneCubs

Nola had a great game Friday night too. Was supposedly 91-92 and peaked at 95 MPH.

His numbers this year: 0.00 ERA, 36 Ks, 2 BBs, 11 hits in 27 innings.

Wasn’t the sticking point with Nola his velocity? I thought I remembered that he has 3 solid pitches, but doesn’t have a real plus plus pitch and projects as more of a 4?

  • cubbcard

lets continue this shut out pitching and lots of runs scoring. i could get used to that. go cubs!

  • Darth Ivy

Cool shoes, bro (seriously, what are they? Nikes?)

      Pumas.

I have noticed recently that on many of the posts that there is no reply option available. I see a “permalink” there, but no way to comment. I don’t remember this being the case in the past.

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

I’m guessing the ones you’re seeing are ones in very long reply chains. Once it reaches a certain “depth” (i.e. five or six replies of replies), the reply function goes away, lest the comment boxes shrink to nothingness.

It’s always been that way. But perhaps there are more long chains lately.

      • FFP

Woody, if you click the last available reply in the chain, I think it just gets added to the bottom of that chain (under the latest permalink only reply). I think. I just figured this out today.

  • Serious Cubs Fan

Junior Lake should start the season at Iowa. The guy looks lost at the plate.

  • willis

Baez double, knocked in by a Lake single…I like that.

And yes I think Lake is pressing a little. Which I don’t know why because it seems they are handing him an OF spot. Maybe he’ll break out here shortly, that rbi single can’t hurt.

    • Kyle

Lake’s not very good at making contact with baseball pitches. That’s probably his problem.

  • Serious Cubs Fan

You know whats sad, I’d pay double the price to see the all the top prospects play rather then our big leaguers.

The Cubs should have a prospect day this spring and market it. I bet you the game would be completely sold out and their would be more excitement and buzz about that game. Play: Bryant, Soler, Baez, Almora, Alcantara, Vogelbach, Olt, and start CJ Edwards and have play the kids a full 9 innings. I would rather see that game then any game with the big leaguers this spring. Sad but true

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

I feel the same way (in terms of wanting to see that game), but I’m not so sure the actual ticket-buying public would agree. The non-Baez/Bryant prospects didn’t really get much of an ovation at Cubs Park when I was there. Certainly not more than the average big league starter.

    • Jason P

MLB has a rule (of which I was unaware until it came up in the Marlins-Red Sox exhibition a few days ago) that spring starting lineups must contain at least 4 players with big league experience.

      • ssckelley

Is this for all 9 innings?

  • ssckelley

Huge error by Bryant at third that gave up the Cubs lead.

  • willis

Rivero and Batista just blew up for a Brewer 5 spot in the 7th. 7-6 Brewers. Ick.

I didn’t realize Javier Baez swung so hard. I didn’t realize anyone swung so hard.

    • Serious Cubs Fan

Its crazy how violent Baez’s swing is. Including Soler for that matter (not to the same degree though)
