cubs park shoesThe Reds come to Cubs Park to face Edwin Jackson in his final long tuneup for the regular season. The game will be on WGN, so everyone can watch and enjoy. If you can’t watch, you can listen on WGN Radio, too.

With the large cut earlier in the day, fewer guys are in camp for regular starts (for example, Javier Baez does not start today, though he’s listed as available off of the bench). But today’s lineup is mostly regulars, and could be a glimpse of most of the guys who’ll start on Opening Day, aside from Starlin Castro, who should be back by then.

That includes, by the way, Mike Olt, making his second start at third base. The job, it would seem, is his to lose at this point, making Luis Valbuena a great backup, and making Donnie Murphy a roster question mark. That is all assuming Darwin Barney remains with the team through Opening Day, which seems fairly likely at this point, especially now that the Tigers have filled their shortstop need.

Lineup:

  1. Darwin Barney, 2B
  2. Justin Ruggiano, LF
  3. Anthony Rizzo, 1B
  4. Mike Olt, 3B
  5. Nate Schierholtz, RF
  6. Welington Castillo, C
  7. Ryan Sweeney, CF
  8. Donnie Murphy, SS
  9. Edwin Jackson, P

Can we send lake down already….he needs to fix his approach, swing, or whatever got him going from last year.

On a positive note: can’t wait till June

Rizzo, Baez, Castro, and Olt infield will be sick!!

I’m hoping the Cubs have Barney batting leadoff because he needs at bats, and not because Renteria has visions of his career .293 OBP hitting there during the season.

      Scouts in attendance perhaps?

I think this’ll end up being the lineup once Castro is healthy:
      SS Castro
      LF Ruggiano
      1B Rizzo (L)
      3B Olt
      RF Schierholtz (L) / Lake
      C Castillo / Kottaras (L)
      CF Sweeney (L)
      2B Valbuena (L) / Barney

I have been wondering the same thing about Murphy. If this happens do you think he might take an assignment to Iowa knowing he is an insurance policy for Olt? No shame playing in Iowa when you are making $825K this year anyway.

  • Funn Dave

    Still no Starlin, huh?

    • johnnyp

He’s supposed to be starting in a minor league game.

  • Jr 25

Looking at that lineup and if that’s close to whats it going to look like (other than Baez hopefully in June and Castro opening day) we are def looking at another 90-100 loss season.

Ironically todays pitcher (Jackson) could be one of the deciding factors to determine if we can keep the losses in the range of 80 to 90. Having Jackson, Wood and Samardzija with .500 records and double digit wins could put us close to the .500 mark. But then we wouldn’t want to throw a monkey wrench into Theo’s plan to get another top 5 draft pick would we?

At this point, I kind of want them to keep an extra reserve infielder and go with only four outfielders. Any of the reserve infielders could be backups in the corner outfield, and I think Bonifacio can play CF. Then we could keep all three of Bonifacio, Murphy and Valbuena.

We’re sneaking up the Fangraphs projected win totals, I think due to relative health. Up to 75-87.

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Luke

Pitching staff still projected to be near the middle of the pack, but also down for the 3rd worst offense.

Somewhere the Cubs have got to find some OBP, but I’m not sure where. They have plenty of power coming out of the system, but not a lot of guys who get on base.

Allison Miller (Cubs director of Marketing) just said they are building Clark’s Clubhouse area behind 3B which is where Clark will hang out during games. So apparently the Clark phase of the renovations have been approved to begin…

Rollins starting 2-3 games wk will be nice wake up call for Castro and the kids will learn from him

.250 hitting thirty-six year old. Sign me up!

Hes another coach and a veteran presence to teach kids how to play the game right

Too bad he lacks the TWTW

        • DarthHater

Perhaps the Cubs could dig up some bones of Honus Wagner and Joe Cronin, then display them as relics in the Wrigley clubhouse. Surely, their sacred presence could only have a positive impact on our young infielders. Hell, if RR doesn’t work out, Honus’s shinbone could even take over as manager!

  • Lou Brown

Rizzo is killing it this spring. Please, please, please oh great baseball gods, let him carry that into the regular season. I promise a worthy sacrifice…

    • Cubs-Win

Can we sacrifice Jackson? I hope he rakes for the better part of the season as well. He did have an unlucky season last year. Maybe he can have the break out season some are expecting.

  • Diehardthefirst

If Renteria can end up with 70 wins with this lineup mgr of year is a lock
