Quantcast

peoria sports complexThe second half of today’s split squad festivities kicks off tonight – they’d never do it, but guys who played earlier today totally would have had time to grab a ride to Peoria – as the Cubs take on the Padres.

There’s no TV for tonight’s game, which is a bummer, because C.J. Edwards is getting “have some fun, kid” start, and Javy Baez is starting at shortstop. You can listen on Cubs.com, though.

Lotta regulars in action tonight, getting their bodies ready for travel and late games, no doubt.

UPDATE: Kris Bryant subs in for Ryan Roberts at the last minute, apparently. Wonder if Roberts is banged up or something.

Lineup:

  1. Emilio Bonifacio, 2B
  2. Ryan Kalish, RF
  3. Anthony Rizzo, 1B
  4. Ryan Sweeney, CF
  5. Javier Baez, SS
  6. John Baker, C
  7. Kris Bryant, 3B
  8. Chris Coghlan, LF
  9. C.J. Edwards, P

I’m on my way to the game. Any special requests for pictures or video?

    • TWC

      Yes. No selfies.

      • NorthSideIrish

+1 on the no selfies. Not personal, just a good rule for society in general.

And of course video of all five Baez homers.

        • https://www.facebook.com/AnotherSpaceSong Bret Epic

If you can get any video of Edwards pitching, that’d be awesome. I’d love to see him strikeout someone like Quentin or Headley.

        • DarthHater

When TWC said it, I think it was personal. :-P

    • Mike

Yes, just one. Stream the whole game making sure you get us all the camera angles that we would normally get during a normal Cubs broadcast. Preferably in HD, but I’d settle for 480p. That would be great!

      • DarthHater

And close-ups of any hot girls in the stands, please.

        • Mike

Yes, lots of these as well. Pretend that you are Arne Harris.

          • dumbledoresacubsfan

Or every WGN camera operator. They are always the best at scoping out the hotties.

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

      Lots of selfies.

    • jp3

Selfie is allowed if Kris Bryant’s dreamy eyes are in your pic? Is that exception allowed?

  • lnfihDeL

How does the get Cut, still get to play in games work?

Is there like a day where all the cuts are considered final or something?

    • BABIP

When they are cut that just means that they get sent down to minor league camp. They can still play in major league spring training games, they just get sent down to work out and practice with the minor league players.

  • Mike

Ooh Bryant now playing instead of Roberts! Hot prospect action tonight kids.

  • GoCubsGo

Man, we’ve had some good moments broadcast on TV this spring, but I sure wish this one was on.

  • ssckelley

Damn, I would pay money on pay per view to watch this one.

  • Spoda17

Shibby… this is the future… maybe not, but maybe

  • Patrick G

Whyyyyyyy when Baez, Bryant and Kalish(sleeper player crush this spring) and Edwards pitching, that this game is not on TV?!

    • college_of_coaches

Because it’s not televised, the game will feature an interview with author Cormac McCarthy, a jaguar sighting, and Milt Pappas and Bruce Froemming hugging it out on the diamond during the stretch.

  • willis

This not being on tv live or delayed is just cruel.

  • craigp

I’d love to see Edwards live!

  • David

Better questions… why cant Bryant, Rizzo and Baez be batting 3, 4 and 5??????

  • David

How ironic – Cashner is pitching for the Padres.

    • DocPeterWimsey

      That’s not irony, it’s just a coincidence.

Now, it would be ironic if Cashner helped the Cubs to win: then we could ironically point out that the Cubs won the game because of someone they drafted.

  • David

Holy shit was that almost Almora injury scary….

  • BlameHendry

Cashner throwing 97mph and has a 2.70 ERA on the spring. Really wish we gave up somebody else for Rizzo. I mean it’s turning out to be a pretty fair trade, but there’s a handful of other prospects I would have given instead of Cashner, especially considering our lack of talented pitching depth in the system.

    • DocPeterWimsey

And the Padres probably would have said: “no deal.” They didn’t have to trade Rizzo to the Cubs, after all.

That written, I’m not sold on Cashner. Yes, he has good stuff: but he cannot seem to avoid injury.

      • BlameHendry

to me the kid looks like the next Kerry Wood. Both in “stuff” and in injury-prone nature.

    • Blackhawks1963

Takes quality to get quality. Cashner is a special talent. But I still like the addition if Rizzo. He is quietly a guy who is going to deliver 70 extra base hits plus and drive in a lot of runs while playing a great 1st base.

  • willis

Edwards pounds the zone and gets through the first. Nicely done, young man.

    Cashner vs. Baez coming up.

  • itzscott

cubs.com shows a free webcast but when I click on it, it takes to to mlb.com and wants me to buy a subscription.

What am I not doing right?

    • mjhurdle

the audio webcasts require a subscription, i think $15 for the entire year

  • Lou Brown

Gameday has his four seamer at 89, hope that gun is off…

  • blublud

I have seen it as high as 93. I think he playing with the speeds.

    • Blackhawks1963

The LAST thing you want a frontline pitching prospect to be doing is popping the radar gun in a meaningless mid March baseball game. Handle with extreme care was no doubt the message tonight.

  • Patrick W.

Renters a came out to get Edwards … patted him on the chest 5 times. Talked to him some then patted him on the chest again before Edwards left the mound. On his way to the dugout Baker stopped him to give a few more words. Pretty cool to watch the support there.

    • itzscott

The Padre broadcasters said Edwards had butterflies as this was his first Cactus League game ever against major leaguers.

      • Patrick W.

He did look nervous but he made a hell of a play getting over to cover first on a potential double play started by Rizzo. I think k I got it on video but I was way down the left field line. I’ll see if I can post it tonight.

  • craigp

Wish Edwards would’ve been lights out. Just evidence he’s gonna take a while

    • ClevelandCubsFan

Whatever he did was evidence of nothing. Everyone gets rocked. Everyone gets lucky.

  • http://BN Sacko

This line up is very appealing and would be happy with it most of the time, Now consider these guy are backups and on their way up? Holy! that is really exciting.

  • Serious Cubs Fan

how does Arodys Vizcaino have over 2 years of service time already? Can some explain this to me please? I know it has something to do with him being on the 40 man roster while hurt but he never served on the cubs big league roster. i know he spent one year in the brave bullpen but did h accumulate service time while on the DL with the Cubs the last year and a half?
