bn-baseballIt was one of those busy weekends in the Cubs’ world, which is understandable given that today is Opening Day. More on that in a moment. Until then, here’s a look at what you may have missed if you checked out at the end of the week:

Friday Afternoon and Evening

Saturday

Sunday

  • I took a look at the finalized Opening Day roster for the Cubs, and compared it to the Opening Day roster one year ago. The conclusion? Pretty similar talent level (which is troubling), but much greater upside potential and much greater versatility/flexibility. From top to bottom, I prefer this year’s iteration slightly, which is surprising, given the midseason sell-off last year and the lack of big moves this offseason.
  • The Daytona Cubs revealed their tentative Opening Day roster, which answers a lot of prospect questions.
  • And, finally, the Cubs made the roster moves necessary to set things up for Opening Day, including the surprise decision to send Kyuji Fujikawa to the 15-day DL and not the 60-day DL.
  • ssckelley

I remember not too long a go mentioning that the Cubs might bank some of the payroll to use in the future and got blasted for it. It appears this makes sense now and is the correct move.

    • Fishin Phil

Eh, you’d have probably gotten blasted for saying you like puppies.

      • Greenroom

Puppies! How dare you. Looking over all the posts just reminds me of how much work you really put in, day in and day out. Thanks, Brett! Cheers to opening day and the Cubs.

        Go Cubs-

Anonymity on keyboards promotes unfiltered disgust for other’s opinions. As for banking or using resources properly is how you measure management. Think the Tigers are going to have big bucks for Scherzer?

  • Ballgame17

The day has arrived. Impossible NOT to be pumped. You never know what can happen!

“The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time.”

    Opening Day

(a tear swells up) that is just beautiful.

    • Greenroom

Great quote! Imho, the greatest baseball movie of all time. The Natural #2.

  • cub4life

    Brett,

are you or Luke going to do a piece on the Iowa roster before they start on Thursday?

    • Ivy Walls

BTW can’t wait till last weekend in April, got tics to CO Springs SkySox (Rockies) AAA vs Iowa Cubs

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

      Sure. When it’s released.

      • cub4life

I thought it was already up, but i guess i was wrong. (looked on their website and saw a roster that seemed to have everyone except Baez).

        • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

Yeah, those are basically Spring rosters mixed with old rosters. Not really useful at this point.

          • cub4life

            got ya, thanks.

  • blublud

Brett, I just wanna say thanks for this platform, man. No matter who I debate with, or what we debate over, this site is my favorite site in the world. The work you put in on the site is unparalleled, and your success, the fact that you receive much national attention, and your faithful crowd that comes on a daily basis does nothing but support that claim. Whether it is official or not, today is a holiday. Opening day for baseball is the best day of year.

HERE’S TO A GREAT YEAR FOR THE CUBS AND FOR BLEACHERNATION.

    • cub4life

+1 total agree. Thanks Brett & Luke and heres to the first pitch in approx 4 hours.

    • JCubs79

Die hard what do you think about the Cubs getting 1/2 a run every time a runner reaches 2nd base?

  • Johnny Chess

Prediction Cubs go 17 and 10 to start the year

    • Kyle

      I assume that’s a typo and you meant 17 and 100.

      • Johnny Chess

Cubs go 17 and 10 to give hope / 17 and 100 too pessimistic
