chris rusin cubsIf you’re looking for a smile today, look no further than Chris Rusin’s start for the Iowa Cubs:

9 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 BB, 3 K.

Yup, that’s a no-hitter.

It’s a great feather in the cap for Rusin, who was hoping to be in the Chicago Cubs’ rotation this year, but didn’t quite make it out of Spring Training, and has been putting in his work at AAA while he waits for an opportunity. One start, alone, won’t get him there, and he now faces a lot of competition for the next open rotation job – Tsuyoshi Wada might get the first crack, and guys like Kyle Hendricks, Eric Jokisch (who threw a no-hitter last year at AA), Dallas Beeler, and Carlos Pimentel could also receive consideration – but this can only help.

Good for Rusin. I have enjoyed this.

(Oh, also: Javier Baez had three hits in the game.)

Good for him. Baez went 3-5 with a K. Vitters 2-4. I hope Vitters heats up. I really think he would be the best outfielder when it comes to hitting if he were on the ML roster.

As for Rusin, I think him and Wada should get a shot later in the year after Hammel and Shark get traded. It would really suck to see Villanueva out there again.

    • JCubs79

Vitters has been. He’s hit 3 HR’s in his last 3.

      • KHRSS

I know but hopefully he keeps it up another couple of weeks.

    • Spriggs

Kind of breathed a big sigh of relief there with the Baez news. Is this the start of his roll? I hope so. It’s coming.

  • Edwin

He could be the next Manny Parra!

  • willis

Great all around game for the Iowa Cubs today. Baez got off the schnide, Vitters another good game at the dish and a no-no. Wonderful stuff. It’s going to be fun in Memphis towards the end of the month when these guys come into town.

  • licoricewhip

It’s pretty hard to throw a no-no when there are only three strikeouts. Impressive.

  • aa.

Glad Rusin threw this game at Iowa, because if he did it in Chicago, it would have gone to extras.

    • http://BN Sacko

      Ha Ha good one.

  • http://www.ehanauer.com clark addison

Ken Holtzman’s first no hitter in 1969 had no K’s.

    • Spriggs

And the starting catcher that day was… playing in his last game ever… ?

And he got taken out of the no-hit game with an injury and was replaced by what catcher?

  • Paddy26

Starting lineup just announced. Olt at DH, Wood pitching. Are we sure Wood cannot do both?

    • Jon

Can we use the DH for Barney and not Wood?

      • Paddy26

That would be ideal, we might have to check the rulebook on this one haha

        • 5412

I believe you might be able to DH for anyone but not sure.

          • DarthHater

Nope. DH for pitcher only. Rule 6.10(b):

A hitter may be designated to bat for the starting pitcher and all subsequent pitchers in any game without otherwise affecting the status of the pitcher(s) in the game. A Designated Hitter for the pitcher must be selected prior to the game and must be included in the lineup cards presented to the Umpire in Chief. …

      • Kycubs

Can we trade Barney for a bag of balls and play literally anyone else on the roster at second?

        • http://BN Sacko

          we did with DeJesus

        • http://bleachernation.com woody

I don’t think Barney is going anywhere untill the third base situation stabilizes. If Somebody wins the job on an everyday basis then Valbuena is open to take the majority of starts at second untill Baez or Alcantara come up.

      • http://obstructedview.net Myles

You actually can do this. I would strongly consider it.

      • ssckelley

If this is legal I like it!

        • JulioZuleta

Unfortunately-not legal. Lots of weird DH rules. A player that starts the game on defense can’t later be part of a double switch that makes him the DH. For example, if Olt started the game at 3rd, and later RR wanted to bring in Valbuena to 3rd and move Olt to DH, well, he couldn’t do it.

The DH is optional, however. So Renteria could bat Wood if he wanted to.

      • CubsFaninMS

Pride being considered, why would you NOT put Wood in the lineup? He single-handedly made himself the winner recently with his own offense. Assessing it objectively, Wood is likely the better hitter than Barney.

        • Brocktoon

Because any position player on our team (and probably our AAA team as well) is a better hitter than Travis Wood.

          • CubsFaninMS

I would disagree, although a huge sample size alert hinders your argument and mine.

            • Brocktoon

Travis Wood’s minor league hitting totals would’ve gotten him sent out for one of Mike Scioscia’s kids. His major league hitting stats would have people begging for his DFA to be replaced by Chris Valaika. He’s a good hitting pitcher. He is not a passable major league hitter.

              • Brocktoon

I think nearly everyone would agree that Zambrano was our best hitting pitcher of the last 25 years. His career wOBA is lower than that of Darwin Barney.

        • JulioZuleta

First, even if it made sense (which it might here), a manager would never do it because it would be a slap in the face to the rest of his team. Also, if a team was to start a game without the DH, it cannot later insert a DH. If Wood had a bad outing, and had to leave in the first few innings, you would have to bat your relievers or a pinch hitter every time the 9th spot came around.

    • http://www.friendly-confines.com hansman

Olt and Wood have the same career OPS.

This way, Olt gets to play today!!!! We should be happy to see what we have in him.

      • Brocktoon

So you’re saying we should give Wood 400 ABs somewhere to see what we have?

        • DarthHater

He should be pitching every day.

          • renegade4196

            Wood>Barney, Schierholtz, Baker

  • Spoda17

    Good for Rusin et al…

  • http://BN Sacko

    Pleasent surprise.

  • JulioZuleta

Rusin also had 2 hits on offense. Not a bad day.

  • CubsFaninMS

Honestly, this does not make me more optimistic about Rusin. That being said, great job guy! Have to give the kid a pat on the back. Maybe it’s a sign of a more mature pitcher in the making.

    • AreWeThereYet

It’s just one game, it’s just exciting for him.

  • Pauly68

Had to take my dog to the vet this morning and was late getting to the game in NOLA. As I arrived in the 3rd inning, I found out it was Anti-Bully/DARE Day at Zephyr Field and there are 8,000 ten year-olds at the park. So, in order to avoid the pending riot at the Dippin’ Dots station and the bottle neck getting out, my buddy and I left in the 6th inning to grab a bite to eat. We caught 3 only innings of the pending no-hitter :(

  • nakedman1664

Good for him. Anywhere I can catch a radio feed of the game, after the fact?

  • Spriggs

Good for Rusin! Let’s just not all start thinking he’s good now.

  • ruby2626

Baez had 3 hits so not to be outdone Kris Bryant had 3 hits with HR’s 7 and 8. Want to say 6 RBI’s also.

  • cubbiekoolaid2015

I think it’s safe to say today was the best day of the season for the Cubs minor leagues.

Rusin throws a no no. Baez gets 3 hits. Bryant hits 2 home runs and a collects another walk. Almora went 1-3 and drew another walk. Vizcaino pitched a spotless inning striking out two. Vitters and Andreoli stayed hot and the icing on the cake is the fact that Soler is back.

    Good stuff all around.
