zac rosscupAs discussed this morning, Chicago Cubs reliever Pedro Strop left last night’s game with a groin issue, and it turned out to be a “moderate” issue.

That is to say, he’s got a moderate groin strain, which is expected to keep him out upwards of three to four weeks (Bruce Miles). In his place, the Cubs recalled lefty reliever Zac Rosscup, whom they just sent down this past weekend in the flurry of Arrieta-Sweeney-related roster moves. Normally, a player optioned like Rosscup wouldn’t have been eligible to return for 10 days (you can’t just yo-yo a guy daily), but, when he’s replacing an injured player, he can come right back.

So, Rosscup is back. He remains a potential long-term piece in the bullpen, one with great stuff, so it will be nice to see him possibly get an extended shot.

Of course, he could be sent right back out when Jose Veras (oblique rehab, already had one rehab outing) returns, or when the Cubs go back down to seven relievers.

While I like Rosscup 13 man staffs and 3! lefties in the pen makes zero GD sense. SMH.

Alert the presses! I agree with Jon.

Your head is also a block of wood. *shrug*

        • Fishin Phil

          Ok, ya got me there.

The bigger bummer is most of the bullpen guys who wouldn’t be sent down are being outperformed by the younger guys – including Rosscup, who I think should be on the team. Until they trade/cut Russell, the bullpen construction will be tricky.

I would have liked to see an OF called up, preferably Watkins or Vitters, but Rosscup has pitched well.

I love Rosscup so I am initially happy.

I hate 13 man bullpens so I’m sad again.

Love is a many splendored thing

      Love can make you happy

      Love is a battlefield

What’s love got to do with it?

Some say love, it is a river
        That drowns the tender reed.
Some say love, it is a razor
That leaves your soul to bleed.
Some say love, it is a hunger,
        An endless aching need.
I say love, it is a flower,
        And you its only seed.

I’ll take the credit whenever this song rings in your ear next time Renteria Votes Pedro!

        • nakedman1664

          It will. Every time.

            Put some clothes on.

  • SenorGato

Hoping Rosscup takes a spot permanently moving forward. As LH relievers go I like him.

  • mudge

Last year they couldn’t give Sveum a second left-hander. Now there are three, and no bench bats to speak of. I guess GMs can call out managers and not vice versa.

  • http://BN Sacko

Enough pitching let them score 4 so we can score 5..bring up a stick!

  • Blackhawks1963

There is no hitter worth a shit calling up from Triple A, Baez and Alcantara not withstanding. The great Josh Vitters remains the enigmatic and overrated pile that he has always been. Szczur isn’t major league material, at least not right now. Watkins is nothingness really.

  • Paddy26

Everyone seems to be hating the 13-man pen, but I honestly don’t mind it. Bullpen depth is always helpful, and if we called up another position player, we’d just be seeing even more platooning and people like Olt/Lake who most people want to see play would get less time.

    • Jon

Schierholrz starting against lefties and Barney ending the game at bat I think in a nutshell prove the 13 man staff sucks. At least for this particular roster

  • mudge

13 man bullpen an option if you have lousy starters. It’s the one problem Cubs don’t have this year.
