busch stadiumThe Cubs put on a hell of a show last night at the plate, and a repeat performance tonight would be swell. Being that last night’s came, at first, off of Tyler Lyons, and tonight, the Cubs face Adam Wainwright … I wouldn’t bet on it.

Then again, the Cubs did rip Wainwright for six runs on ten hits last time they faced him, so you never know.

Jake Arrieta goes for the Cubs, coming off his ineffective start against the White Sox, thanks to some control issues. He dominated the Cardinals in the start before that, so maybe it’s just a Cardinals thing. As I always say, though, it can be hard to face the same team in such quick succession.

  • cubmig

a terrible way to lose this one…….

  • Jason P

I hate relievers who can’t throw strikes. Grimm’s isn’t going to be a long term bullpen piece if he doesn’t get that BB/9 down.

    • Brocktoon

Well, that’s pretty much our entire bullpen

      • Jason P

Not really. Rondon, Schlitter, Villanueva, Ramirez, and Wright have all been fine in that area. It’s just Grimm, Strop, and (uncharacteristically) Russell who have had walk issues.

        • Brocktoon

Well for this 1/4 season. My recollection was Rondon, Schlitter, and Ramirez had the same control issues in their profile.

    • Funn Dave

I hate starters who can’t throw strikes. Arrieta isn’t going to be a long-term rotation piece if he doesn’t get that BB/9 down.

  • Soda Popinski

    I’m sad.

  • renegade4196

Grimm just earned his “get the fuck out” ticket. what a fucking joke.

  • BlameHendry

So I’m about done with Grimm. Fucks sake man… The ghost of Carlos Marmol never leaves us

  • Jon

    Well, Blackhawks.

  • Bill

Grimm screwed that inning up from the first batter. Has the guy 0-2 and throws a fastball right down the middle. Then he can’t throw strikes and walks 2 guys and hits a third guy. Nice job. Des Moines is very nice this time of year.

  • Medicos

Tonight’s loss shows why the St. Louis franchise is 9,220-8510 with a .520 winning percentage. The Cards win the close games and our Cubs don’t. 11 World series championships in 18 attempts speaks for itself.

    • Brocktoon

Yes, tonight’s loss shows why a bunch of guys who have been dead for 50 years won certain games

      • renegade4196

It’s clubhouse culture. The losing culture will always exist with the Cubs.

        • Brocktoon

          Never trusted that Frank Chance!

          • Brocktoon

Maybe if we changed detergent the jerseys would no longer have that losing culture attached to it?

            • Brocktoon

              Perhaps some new sod?

              • renegade4196

                Switch to Cotton jerseys!!

    • http://www.friendly-confines.com hansman

The Cubs have a franchise .511 winning percentage.

That’s about an extra win and a half a year difference.

      • Medicos

Hansman—You forgot to add that the Cubs have won 2 World Series in 10 tries. Let’s give our Cubs franchise credit for doing something successful.

    • http://www.friendly-confines.com hansman

Ok, it’s actually 153 more wins (based on winning percentage) which equates to 1 win a year and another 30 wins scattered over 130 years.

    • http://www.friendly-confines.com hansman

And the Cardinals are actually 10399-9649 as a franchise for a .518 winning percentage.

    • Cyranojoe

Man, you make me miss Diehard.

  • BlameHendry

    Grimm down, Vitters up, please.

    • http://www.friendly-confines.com hansman

You mean the Josh Vitters that has a .718 OPS in the PCL?

      • Brocktoon

Travis Wood would just inexplicably take his ABs anyway.

    • peoriadude

I’d take Vitters, but I want Bryant.

  • Funn Dave

Brett seem to have gone to bed, so I’ll post the post-game post. Pretend there’s a box score here. And then pretend that I highlighted…something…to indicate the two strikeout / caught stealing double plays….Okay, clearly I don’t have the technical savvy or baseball knowledge to post an EBS. But that was a tough loss. Boni’s RBI in the 9th was pretty dope, though, right?

  • mjhurdle

just got back from the game.
Great time at the ballpark. Just tying the game in the 9th was amazing, because i figured for sure that we would be blown out after last night’s fun time.
Extra innings are a crap-shoot imo. Grimm was shaky, would really like to see him stabilize a bit. His stuff looked good, just no command right now.
The other downside (besides the loss) was that i was talking up Valbuena’s bat flip to all my Cardinal fan friends, and he goes yard and just drops the bat.

      3rd times the charm?

      • Funn Dave

        Bravo, sir.
