busch stadiumSo, the Cubs and Cardinals are making up last night’s rainout on August 30 as part of a doubleheader. But, since everything about yesterday’s game is pretty much the plan for today’s game (starters, lineups, etc.), it’s actually kinda like they’re making up the rainout today. And then they pushed today’s game to August 30.

I think it’d be more fun if they said that.

The Cubs go for the series win today, which wouldn’t have been the case last night. So that’s different.

I am stubbornly continuing the gameday thread on the message board, for those that care to join.

  • Medicos

With the addition of Veras the Cubs are obviously going to remain with 13 on the pitching staff. Since they continue to score less than 3 runs per game, the extra pitcher should help in an attempt to win so many of these close outcome games. Would have liked to have seen more from Rosscup, but obviously the FO isn’t going to take any chances concerning sore shoulders in any of the young hurlers.

  • salesguy

Didn’t know if anyone else had seen this, looks like the FCC is going to plow forward with further misguided proposals regarding the internet.

  • BlameHendry

Wacha just threw two pitches that read 96mph on the gun. What??

  • Medicos

Baker may be outstanding behind the plate, but he certainly isn’t a MLB offensive threat.

  • Jon

Don’t look now, but with a loss today the Cubs can claim first place in the fecal league standings.

  • Jon

On the subject of arms injuries of late, what the F*** is wrong with this high school coach?

    • http://fullcount1544.blogspot.com FullCountTommy

The coach is an idiot, but I feel a little better knowing that he isn’t playing in college, he’s a senior, and it’s probably the last game he’ll pitch in his high school career.

Still incredibly irresponsible by the coach.

  • mudge

Baker’s hit in bad luck. He’s not as bad a hitter as ya might think.

  • BlameHendry

Welp time to turn this game off.

    • Jon

#1 in the Fecal League after today!

  • Darth Ivy

People, remember- with this Cubs offense, there’s really no difference in being down by 2 runs or by 5 runs. They’ll either score nothing or a ton.

    • Darth Ivy

      Worst post ever

  • itzscott

Love it when losses are determined in the 1st inning so I do something more enjoyable like watching paint dry, playing with a ball of yarn or touring local industry.

  • itzscott

There goes that run differential that insists the Cubs are better than their record and have simply experienced decades of bad luck.

  • Jon

  • Darth Ivy

Yes! Seeing Rizzo beat the shift with a bunt then Castro hitting a homer is unbelievably enjoyable

  • cubmig

Starlin!! NICE!!!! Let’s keep doing that!

  • Jason P

  • Travis

I always envisioned Rizzo homering home Castro, but I’m perfectly fine with it either way. Keep it up Castro!

  • Jon

Castro’s 6 HR’s are now 3rd in baseball amount shortshops behind Tulowitzki and Johnny Steroids.

  • Coach K

I wonder if Professor Parks still thinks Castro is gone at the deadline so Baez can take over at short.

    • jp3

He said something pretty dumb yesterday about prospecty goodness, it leaves me but it was ludicrous

      • DarthHater

It was something about Samardzija being in decline, wasn’t it?

  • SirCub

Hey, you guys know all the cool kids are hanging out over on the MB gameday thread, right?

  • cubmig

    Wow……Baker let that 1st pitch–right down the middle –go….?????

  • Travis

How many times before this game has Rizzo bunted to beat the shift this season? I can only remember 1. So far today he is 2-2 on bunts to 3B.

    • Jason P

I’m glad to see it. Rizzo’s been killed the last few games by hard grounders that have gone right into the shift.

      • http://bleachernation.com woody

That’s an easy way for him to pump up his batting average. That would be crazy if he went four for four bunting against the shift.

      • ssckelley

Rizzo has lost a bunch of hits against the shift so it is nice to see him getting a few of them back. I would bunt every time I seen someone use the shift against me, why not? Do it enough times and opposing teams will stop using it.

      • Travis

I do hope he uses this strategy more often. He seems to have been doing well hitting against the shift early this season, but ideally this bunting strategy will make defenses creep back to the left.

  • http://bleachernation.com woody

Baker is so bad he make Barney look like Babe Ruth. When is the last time he got a hit?

    • BlameHendry

I think against the Brewers in that series at Miller Park. Lol

  • Jason P

I find it interesting that Baker is starting today with the off-day yesterday. Maybe there is something to that “personal catcher” thing.

  • http://bleachernation.com woody

Now that you mention that I believe that Baker has caught at least the last three starts for Hammel.

    • ssckelley

I think Baker has started all of them.

  • Jon

If I was a pitcher, I would request a personal catcher that wasn’t a worst hitter than me.

  • JB88

Castro now sporting an OPS over 800. I know it is early, but it is nice to see and would easily be a career mark for him.

    • Travis

I’m am loving the way Rizzo and Castro have hit this season. So far showing career highs even with the lack of lineup protection they get, if you believe in lineup protection theories.

  • aa.

I came here to complain about Baker, but it looks like you all beat me to it.

  • http://bleachernation.com woody

The season is pretty well at the quarter mark and it is tempting to project the numbers. Castro is on pace to hit 20 to 25 homers and drive in 80 RBI’S at this pace.

  • http://bleachernation.com woody

    Hammel likes that chin music.

    • BlameHendry

I stopped watching after he gave up a 2-run single to Wacha, but before that he was really getting close to hitting a lot of the Cardinals batters. Didn’t seem to have his command today.

      • Medicos

BlameHendry: You’re probably correct after the Cards took a 4-0 there isn’t much sense in watching the game because in only 17 games this year have the Cubs scored more than 3 runs.
