The Cubs did it again today with pitching and homers. Each of Starlin Castro, Logan Watkins, and Chris Valaika went deep for the Cubs, and Chris Coghlan drove in two early on.
The pitching part of the equation was mostly new starter Felix Doubront, who was fortunate to get through some early-inning struggles (lots of hits and hard-hit balls), and then later looked like he was cruising. Although he struck out only four, he walked only one. He was around the zone all day, and generally looked as acceptable as a back-end guy as anyone else the Cubs have put out there this year. If that’s really who he is, then, once again, the Cubs have SO MANY interesting 4th/5th types heading into next year. It sounds like we’ll get a see a few more starts out of Doubront this year, though, before deciding anything.
With the win, the Cubs guaranteed a winning August. And they beat the Cardinals for the second time in a row. Nice.
