Ryan Sweeney joins Justin Ruggiano (definitely), Starlin Castro (probably), and Anthony Rizzo (maybe) as a Chicago Cubs position player to have his season end due to injury in the last couple weeks. Sweeney’s ailment is a left hamstring strain, which will apparently not heal in time for him to return by the end of the season, so the Cubs transferred him to the 60-day disabled list.

So that’s all for Sweeney, who struggled through an injury/ineffectiveness/bad luck-filled year with the Cubs after signing a two-year, $3.5 million extension at the end of 2013. I still like him as a reserve outfielder for the Cubs in 2015, though there might be a little competition there. For the season, Sweeney finishes with a .251/.304/.338 line in parts of 77 games.

To take Sweeney’s spot on the 40-man roster, the Cubs called up Ryan Kalish, who had previously been removed from the 40-man roster. He’ll get a few more weeks of reserve action, as the Cubs’ outfield had thinned a bit. It’s unlikely, however, that he’ll be retained on the 40-man roster through the offseason. Instead, the Cubs may try to sign Kalish to another minor league deal if the two sides want to stick together for another year.
