Your one teeny, tiny bright spot from last night’s debacle (the third or sixth straight, depending on your perspective) was Jorge Soler’s solo homer.

You can watch Soler’s bomb here at MLB.com, and you can see the meaty part here on a continuous loop:

Among the things that jump out at you, there is the ferocious bat speed (noted by Ben Badler), which is something we know Soler has, but which we don’t discuss too much. I’m not sure if it’s because his teammate, Javier Baez, has all-time bat speed, or because we focus on other incredible things with Soler. In any case, yeah. Crazy bat speed.

I also love me an opposite field homer. Sure, everyone enjoys a yanked 500-foot bomb, but when a guy meets the ball where it is, and has so much power that he can take that pitch out the opposite way? That gets me very excited.

After Soler rounded second base, we got a flash of the serious necklace he was sporting. It is much bigger than your necklace:

I mentioned the superlative necklace on Twitter, too, and got a response from Soler’s teammate at AA Tennessee:

Dustin Geiger is listed at 6’2″, 180 lbs. A small man, he is not.

One final bit on the Soler homer: I was watching last night’s game on my computer, alone on the couch. When Soler homered, I must have uttered some kind of involuntary, “Oh man!” because within five seconds, The Wife had materialized from nothingness, sidled up next to me on the couch, saying, “What did he do? What did he do?”

Jorge Soler: bringing husbands and wives closer together since 2012.
