I remember back when the Cubs were courting Theo Epstein and that whole thing was going down, there was something of a breather – at least in terms of official news – during the World Series. It’s an unwritten rule that you try not to announce anything major during the World Series, so that the focus can be on those games. Obviously Joe Maddon opting out of his contract was a personal thing, and the rumors that followed were only that: rumors. So nobody’s really overstepped any bounds yet, but with everyone involved likely to want a quick resolution on the Maddon thing (since he’ll almost certainly be replacing another manager, wherever he goes), I wonder how this is going to play. I suppose it could be that we’ll hear something as a “rumor” with an official announcement delayed until after the World Series concludes.
Oh yeah, World Series …
- The Royals beat the Giants 3-2 at AT&T Park last night, going up in the series 2-1. At last, it wasn’t a blowout in the series. The Royals scored one in the first, and then it stayed that way until the sixth, when each team scored two. That makes for a close game the whole way through, and I’m a little sorry I missed it. (The wedding I was at, for the record, was lovely.)
- That Royals’ back-end of the bullpen is just nuts, with three of the best relievers in baseball (Kelvin Herrera, Wade Davis, and Greg Holland) going back-to-back-to-back. How valuable is that in the playoffs?
- Game 4 is tonight at 7pm CT on FOX, with Jason Vargas taking on Ryan Vogelsong. Exactly who you’d expect to be facing each other in a critical World Series game.
