kyle hendricks cubs featureKyle Hendricks is the NL Rookie of the Year. Behind those other six guys. And I say that’s actually pretty cool.

You can see the full tally here, with Jacob deGrom rightly winning the award, and Billy Hamilton, Kolten Wong, Ken Giles, Ender Inciarte, and Joe Panik finishing ahead of Hendricks.

It was a great debut year for Hendricks, who finished with a 2.46 ERA, 3.32 FIP, and a 3.92 xFIP over 80.1 big league innings. He was worth 1.5 WAR, struck out 14.6% of the batters he faced, and walked just 4.7%. Among the Cubs’ host of starting options behind Jake Arrieta heading into the offseason, only Hendricks is considered a relative lock to have a rotation spot heading into Spring Training.

By WAR, Hendricks was rightly placed behind the six guys ahead of him. That is not to say that WAR is the end-all be-all of these things – I’m just saying you can’t have an obvious beef here.

Instead, it’s just very cool that Hendricks got some recognition (technically, two third place votes – smart men, Trent Rosecrans and Matt Calkins) for his excellent performance. Congrats to Hendricks.

Jose Abreu won the award in the AL, by the way, which was long assumed.
