The 2015 Chicago Cubs Convention probably got a nice uptick in interest thanks to an active Winter Meetings and the Joe Maddon hire before it. All the new guys will be in attendance, as well as the rest of the Cubs’ roster and the prospect talent.
Plus me! Not as, like, an actual part of the Convention. But I’ll be there. So, I hope to see many of you there, too.
Meanwhile, the Cubs revealed many more details about this year’s edition, taking place Friday, January 16 through Sunday, January 18 at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers in downtown Chicago (passes available here). The old standbys will be in effect, from the Opening Ceremonies on Friday evening, to the panels throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday morning, to the vendor booths, to the kid-friendly activities, to the autograph opportunities, to the crazy collection of Cubs fans jam-packed into a hotel in the din of winter.
But there will also be a new segment Friday night, called “Friday Night with Ryan Dempster,” which is presented by Budweiser and, per the Cubs, “featur[es] interviews with Cubs players and coaches, comedy vignettes and interactive games.” Comedy vignettes, eh?
Friday night, for the record, also tends to be the evening we all get together at a bar near the Convention to shoot the breeze. It tends to be a nice collection of not only BN’ers, but also other writers and bloggers, and I’ll have more details on that as the day approaches.
Saturday and Sunday morning will feature the following panels/events (subject to change, as necessary):
- Meet the New Cubs
- The Ricketts Family Forum
- Joe Maddon and His Coaching Staff
- A Recent Look Back: 2007-08 Cubs
- Meet Cubs Baseball Management
- Cubs Business Operations Update
- 30 Years of Cubs Convention Memories
- For Kids Only Press Conference
- The Future Is Bright (Rookies)
- Here to Stay (Young Cubs)
- Cubs Family Feud
- Cubs Jeopardy
- Down on the Farm
- Cubs Bingo
Hopefully there isn’t too much in the way of overlap in those panels, because I pretty much want to go to all of them. I’m also interested to learn a bit more about that #CubsSocial one, as that’s the hashtag the team has used previously for Social Media Night events, which have always been a lot of fun, and well-attended by BN’ers.
Among the former Cubs currently confirmed to be in attendance:
- Ernie Banks
- Glenn Beckert
- Ryan Dempster
- Bobby Dernier
- Mark DeRosa
- Leon Durham
- Bob Howry
- Randy Hundley
- Fergie Jenkins
- Jay Johnstone
- Jacque Jones
- Les Lancaster
- Jon Lieber
- Ted Lilly
- Bill Madlock
- Gary Matthews
- Dave Otto
- Milt Pappas
- Glendon Rusch
- Lee Smith
- Tim Stoddard
- Rick Sutcliffe
- Steve Trout
- Billy Williams
- Kerry Wood
There are usually more confirmed as the date approaches.
Speaking of which, I’ll have more details on the Convention from my perspective as the date approaches. It’s a great chance to meet up with a bunch of you – and for you all to meet up with each other – so we’ll have to make sure that happens.
It’s always a fun event, but I’m guessing this year’s Convention will be even more buzz-y, given the excitement building in the Cubs’ world right now.
