baseball hall of fameIt’s official: the 2015 Hall of Fame Class will include four new members. Randy Johnson and Pedro Martinez were no-brainers (though, as always, some folks found reason not to vote for obvious Hall of Famers), and received an overwhelming amount of support. John Smoltz, with a unique career path, was right there behind the two big arms, and Craig Biggio finally gets in after coming within a couple votes last year.

Of particular note to Cubs fans, Sammy Sosa did receive more than 5% of the vote, and will thus stay on the ballot for next year.

Notable:

  • Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens ticked up a couple percentage points from last year, but it wasn’t much of a jump. Clearly, the anti-PED stance is strong.
  • Jeff Bagwell barely moved from last year. Silly.
  • Mike Piazza, on the other hand, made a nice 7% jump. He’ll get in eventually.
  • Tim Raines also made a nice jump – 9% – but he’s still got a ways to go. The voters are just flatly wrong on that one.
  • No one else was even close, including Curt Schilling, who didn’t bump as much from as last year as many were expecting.
  • Larry Walker might be a Hall of Very Good guy, but he probably deserves more votes, just for the show.
  • Lee Smith basically treaded water. He’s got only a couple years left on the ballot, and it’s not looking good.
