As usual, Friday night at the Convention was an awesome mix of Cubs-related hype, meeting tons of cool people, and staying out too late. Saturday at the Convention is the more informative day thanks to all of the panels, so I’ll have updates as the day goes along (cell data service permitting).
In the interim, a super short look at some of the biggest stories going around, many of which I’ll have to give more comprehensive attention later.
- Pedro Strop was the sole arbitration-eligible player with whom the Cubs were not able to settle yesterday. He filed a request for $3 million in 2015, and the Cubs filed for $2 million (Kiley McDaniel). That shouldn’t be wide of a gap to bridge before actually reaching an arbitration hearing next month. As for the other six of seven that settled, it’s great news that the sides were able to come together on deals.
- It sounds like the long-rumored rooftop purchase deals have gone through, with the Ricketts Family buying three rooftops, according to county records and this Tribune report.
- Starlin Castro has moved to Arizona at least part-time, and he’s still working on figuring out what he’s going to do long-term, but it sounds like he knows he has to move permanently at some point (Cubs.com).
- Javy Baez has lost 15 pounds, and has been working hard on his swing this offseason (ESPN).
