salt river fieldThe Cubs head over to Scottsdale to take on the Rockies today at beautiful Salt River Fields (if any other Arizona facility is in the conversation with the Cubs’ digs for the best, it’s Salt River Fields (though the Rockies share it with the Diamondbacks)).

Jason Hammel makes his Spring debut, with Felix Doubront likely to follow. Hammel’s spot in the rotation is assured if he’s healthy, while Doubront is trying to win the exceptionally competitive fifth spot.

Today’s game also marks the debut for new radio partner WBBM 780AM. So, you can listen there, or on Gameday Audio to hear Pat Hughes and Ron Coomer make their season debut. Unless there’s a surprise feed at the Rockies’ site, there won’t be any video today.

The Cubs lineup:

  1. Dexter Fowler, CF
  2. Anthony Rizzo, 1B
  3. Starlin Castro, SS
  4. Miguel Montero, C
  5. Jorge Soler, RF
  6. Kris Bryant, 3B
  7. Chris Coghlan, LF
  8. David Ross, DH
  9. Jonathan Herrera, 2B

The first four matches the home lineup on Thursday, which is certainly interesting. It’s also interesting that, at least come May, the top seven if a very plausible (and attractive) batting order. While Montero may look like an odd fit there at four, he does have a good power/OBP combo. It’s interesting to see. That’s all I’m saying. Joe Maddon has said not to read too much into early Spring lineups, so I won’t. Could be that this is all about getting certain guys at bats at certain points in the game.
