kid-watching-tvFor reasons I won’t belabor here beyond this link, how the Chicago Cubs perform in the ratings in the next couple years is probably going to be significantly important in determining just how strong the long-term TV deal will be after 2019.

And, as we’ve seen in baseball over the last decade, locking in an enormous TV deal can be a game-changer for an organization. For the Cubs, whose revenues are already climbing in other areas? A huge TV is going to mean paradigm-shifting money. “Blow the luxury tax cap from time to time if you want” money. Bleep you money.

There’s still a bit to climb, but this kind of explosion in ratings demonstrates that, clearly, when the Cubs offer a compelling on-field product, fans will watch. We saw ratings spike last year when the Cubs brought up some youngsters and started playing better baseball.

If the Cubs win a few more over the next week, I can only imagine how Kris Bryant’s debut will do ….
