myrtle beach pelicans logoOnce upon a time, in a sporting universe far away, there was an important football game that became known for deflated balls, odd press conferences, creative science, endless investigations, and generally a whole lot of irrelevant nonsense.

But something good came out of that mess. And that something good is happening in Myrtle Beach tonight.

Welcome to #DeflateCancer Night, the glorious amalgamation of baseball, charity, and, well, industrial strength trolling (but in a good way), that can only happen in minor league baseball. The list of thematic events in the January press release is as awe-inspiring as the article itself (seriously, take five minutes today to read this thing) and includes promotions such as:

  • Free ball inflation or ball donation at Gate 1,
  • A Rocky Mountain oyster eating contest between the General Manager and a fan,
  • Complementary ring cleaning,
  • Discounts on meatball subs (among other items),
  • And a whole lot more.

This is one of the most relentlessly and creatively themed minor league promotions I have ever heard of, and the best part is that it is all for a very good cause. #DeflateGate night is the first of the Pelicans’2015 Strike Out Cancer series and everything is aimed at raising awareness of and money to fight testicular cancer.

The only sad part is that I can’t be there in person to marvel at an event that sounds like it would have Bill Veeck jealously taking notes.

Scores From Yesterday

Iowa – A wet day on the gulf coast resulted in a postponed game.
Tennessee – Tennessee had the day off.
Myrtle Beach – The Pelicans split a doubleheader with Salem, winning the first game 5-3 but losing the second 3-1.
South Bend – South Bend took an early lead, but lost it late in a 3-2 loss.

Performances of Note

  • [Myrtle Beach] Jen-Ho Tseng was effective in his first start of the year. Over 5 innings he allowed 2 runs on 4 hits while striking out 5. Unsurprisingly, he didn’t walk anyone.
  • [Myrtle Beach] Jonathan Martinez was excellent in Game Two. He struck out 4 over 5 innings while allowing a run on 2 hits and a walk.
  • [Myrtle Beach] Josh Conway pitched one inning of relief in Game Two. He allowed no runs despite giving up 2 hits and a walk, and he also struck out a pair.
  • [Myrtle Beach] A Game One double from Carlos Penalver and Game Two doubles from Mark Zagunis and Daniel Lockhart were the only extra base hits collected by the Pelicans on Tuesday.
  • [South Bend] Trey Martin doubled and tripled out of the lead off spot for the Cubs.
  • [South Bend] Gleyber Torres walked and collected 2 more singles to finish 2 for 3 with his second steal of the season. He is now on a 4 game hit streak.
  • [South Bend] Cael Brockmeyer also stayed hot with yet another double and a walk. He has 7 hits on the season, and 6 have gone for extra bases.
  • [South Bend] Ryan McNeil struck out 2 in his scoreless inning, but also walked 2 and gave up a hit. Tommy Thorpe struggled (3 H, 1 BB, 2 R, 1 K) and ultimately gave up the go ahead tally to Dayton.
  • [South Bend] The guy McNeil and Thorpe relieved was Ryan Williams. All he did was strike out 7 over 6 innings while allowing one run on one hit.

Other News

  • The rained out Iowa game will be made up as part of a Thursday doubleheader.
  • And while we’re on the subject of Iowa, we are now just days away from Brett and I meeting up with hopefully a small army of you in Iowa for the I-Cubs games on the 18th and 19th.  As an added bonus, you’ll get to watch one of the best collections of infield talent ever assembled on a minor league baseball diamond … unless Kris Bryant has been called up by then.  If that is the case, then we’ll have to settle for one of the best collections of infield talent to be assembled on a minor league baseball diamond since last season.
  • [Brett: Which reminds me – if anyone has recommendations on where we should meet up before Saturday’s game, speak now or forever hold your peace. Walkable to the ballpark is going to be a must. We’ll try to have the place finalized with a where and when by Friday.]
