Just as it looked like a return to the big leagues was around the corner, Javier Baez might have to deal with a setback.
In today’s Iowa Cubs game – Baez was once again playing third base – he was showing off his speed, swiping his seventh base of the season, and Baez stayed down in pain. It looked in replays like he jammed his hand into second base on his headfirst slide, and, after the trainer and manager checked with him, Baez left the game.
Tommy Birch reports this evening that x-rays revealed a “non-displaced fracture in his left ring finger.”
Oof. Obviously a hand injury or a wrist injury can be a lot worse, but a broken bone is a broken bone. I won’t even pretend to have a timeline on his recovery just yet, because there’s so much variability on when he could return. He’ll be evaluated further in the coming days (Birch).
We’ll just have to stay tuned for more details.
