iowa cubs logoWhat did Kodak, Tennessee; Frederick, Maryland; and South Bend, Indiana all have in common yesterday? Rain. And plenty of it. As a result of all that rain, only one Cubs minor league game was played yesterday.

I don’t mind, though. That just means I have more time to focus on Day One of the Draft. More on that will be showing up later today.

Scores From Yesterday

Iowa – The Cubs beat the Redbirds 2-1.
Tennessee – A rain out.
Myrtle Beach – Another rain out.
South Bend – Also a rain out.

Performances of Note

  • [Iowa] Dallas Beeler allowed a single hit over 6 shutout innings. He walked no one and struck out 8.  It was a great night for Beeler, especially that strikeout total. If he can keep this up for a few more starts we can add his name  back to the list as part of the Chicago rotation  depth.  He had struggled in his time in Iowa up to this point, though, so his next few starts are going to be well worth watching.
  • [Iowa] Drake Britton allowed the only Memphis run in his 2 innings of relief. He gave up 3 hits and a walk while striking out no one.
  • [Iowa] Arismendy Alcantara doubled for the Cubs’ only extra base hit. He finished 1 for 4.

Other News

  • The Pacific Coast League Player of the Week for the first week of June goes to Iowa infielder Christian Villanueva. He homered on each of the first four days of June, added a pair of doubles and a triple, and wound up leading the league in slugging over the week with an .867. Villanueva is enjoying an offensive renaissance that makes him simultaneously more interesting to the Cubs as a bench player and to other teams as a trade piece. When the Cubs start shopping for mid-season help, expect to see Villanueva’s name in some rumors.
