Chicago Cubs 2016 NL Central Championship Gear

castro cubs walk off celebrate mbdTonight’s Cubs game will be played directly opposite tonight’s Game Five of the Stanley Cup Final, and I wonder how much they’ll show – at least in the way of updates – on the video board at Wrigley Field. It’s something that wasn’t even possible just last year, but I’m sure the Blackhawks fans who wound up with Cubs tickets before they knew tonight’s game would be played when it is will appreciate it.

  • Although the Cubs lost yesterday primarily on the back of their own mistakes, Joe Maddon was impressed by the performance (CSN). Errors are going to happen, and sometimes they’ll bite you. But the Cubs battled back against Johnny Cueto in a game that would have been easy to write off after the first inning.
  • Maddon even dropped a TWTW (“the will to win”) on his team in a completely non-ironic way (Tribune). Hawk Harrelson approves.
  • Jorge Soler is out of his walking boot, but isn’t quite yet doing full baseball activities as he recovers from a sprained ankle. That could be coming soon, though (, and the next step after that will be a rehab assignment.

  • Jason Hammel, although he didn’t get help behind him early, was out of sync all day, too fine at the edges of the zone, and missing up when he came back into the zone.
  • Joe Maddon discusses the pros and cons of having a dedicated closer (CSN).
  • The nitty gritty of Jon Lester’s latest rough outing, from earlier this week in Detroit.
  • The Dodgers designated Darwin Barney to make room for Ronald Torreyes in a move designed to incorporate as many small, former Cubs organizational second basemen as possible. I’m going to assume that Mike Fontenot handled the paperwork.
