The minor leagues are full of impressive, enjoyable, and crazy plays daily. Diving catches, monster homers, record breakers.
Maybe this isn’t quite up there in the pantheon, but it’s a heck of a lot of fun. It’s the two Cubs mashers at AA Tennessee, Kyle Schwarber and Dan Vogelbach, known more for their approach at the plate than their prowess on the base paths, pulling off a double steal:
Schwarber got to third very quickly, thanks to a good jump and decent speed. He’s got 40 speed, according to both MLB.com and FanGraphs, and we know he’s a good athlete, so don’t sleep on him out there. Although that was his first stolen base of the year, he did steal five last year.
Vogelbach gets a 20 – that’d be the low end on the scouting scale – for his speed, and it was also his first stolen base of the year. But he stole four bases last year and five the year before.
In any case, stealing bases isn’t going to be where these guys make their money. And that’s what makes seeing them pull off the double steal all the more fun.
