Scoreboard Watching: Doubleheader Doesn’t Help, But the Giants Did

Chicago Cubs News, MLB News and Rumors

wrigley scoreboard featureThe Cubs won yesterday! And also, they didn’t. The Pirates won yesterday! And also, they didn’t.

Vis a vis each other, yesterday’s doubleheader split was a clear win for the Pirates, because the Cubs didn’t gain any ground and stand 4.0 games back of the Pirates. With 18 games left, 5 head-to-head, the Cubs can still pass the Pirates, but yesterday didn’t really help in that effort.

Neither team got help in the Central, either, as the Cardinals beat the Brewers in 10 innings. The net on the day, then, was a half-game bump back for each of the Pirates (3.0 games behind the Cardinals) and the Cubs (7.0 games).

The good news is that the Giants blew a five-run lead [Edit: Oops. Make that a 5-3 lead.] and lost to the Reds. That puts them 7.5 games behind the Cubs, and shrunk the Cubs’ magic number for the second Wild Card to just 11.
