Scoreboard Watching: Cubs Magic Number Down to the Three

Chicago Cubs News, MLB News and Rumors

wrigley scoreboard featureThe Cubs keep doing their part to chip away at the magic number, winning again last night to drop it to just three. It fell no lower because the Giants beat the Padres. They remains a healthy 9.5 games behind the Cubs, and will not be coming back … but we can’t say the Cubs have clinched until they clinch.

In the Central, the Cardinals beat the Reds, holding firm to their 6.0 game lead over the Cubs. Their lead over the Pirates likewise held steady at 4.0 games.

The Pirates beat the Rockies again, so they’re still a couple games ahead of the Cubs for the top Wild Card spot. With the weekend series between the Cubs and Pirates looming, it would be nice for that gap to shrink to one game today, which will put the Cubs in a position to take the Wild Card lead (they hold the tiebreaker) merely by winning the series 2-1.
