According to multiple reports, the Chicago Cubs will today unveil their most significant free agent signing in a long time – a week? a year? a decade? I suppose it depends on how you define “significant” – at a press conference today at 2:30pm CT. That would be Jason Heyward, who signed a complex eight-year, $184 million deal to join the Cubs this past weekend.
You’ll be able to listen along live on both AM-670 The Score, as well as ESPN1000. These big-time press conferences are also typically streamed live on CSN Chicago and Cubs.com, and I’ll update you as soon as that is confirmed. (UPDATE: CSN will indeed be streaming.)
Heyward, 26, is currently slated to become the Cubs’ new starting center fielder, though we’ll see if future offseason moves clarify that role by opening his natural right field back up.
With Heyward added, the Cubs’ 40-man roster will stand at an even 40, and that’s before the PTBNL (thought to be Brendan Ryan) from the Starlin Castro/Adam Warren trade is added. Another spot, then, will need to be cleared.
