Cubs Cut 11: Contreras, Candelario, Edwards, Johnson, Alcantara, Riefenhauser, More

Chicago Cubs News, Chicago Cubs Transactions, Cubs Minor Leagues and Prospects

Today, the Chicago Cubs made their next round of spring roster cuts, sending 11 players to minor league camp:

  • Willson Contreras, C
  • Jeimer Candelario, 3B
  • Carl Edwards, Jr., RHP
  • Pierce Johnson, RHP
  • Arismendy Alcantara, UTL
  • C.J. Riefenhauser, LHP
  • Stephen Fife, RHP
  • Felix Pena, RHP
  • Drew Rucinski, RHP
  • Edgar Olmos, LHP
  • Taylor Davis, C

There are no surprises on the list, though a couple of those guys – Edwards and Riefenhauser – had outside shots of making the bullpen if there were some injuries

Candelario and Contreras have lit up camp, but neither was going to make the big league team just yet. Interestingly, Candelario was assigned to the AA roster, which doesn’t necessarily mean that’s where he’ll open the season, but it does hint in that direction. Even if Candelario starts the season at AA Tennessee, he won’t be there long.

Edwards and Johnson will continue to work at AAA Iowa this year, awaiting a chance to contribute in the big leagues. Alcantara will be doing the same, though he’ll have to make some really significant offensive adjustments to be a realistic utility option for the Cubs this year, absent a rash of injuries.

After the 11 cuts, the spring roster is down to 45.
