Chicago Cubs News, Chicago Cubs Transactions, Cubs Minor Leagues and Prospects

chicago cubs logo featureToday, in the midst of actual cubs being at Chicago Cubs camp, the team cut nine players, all of whom were in camp as non-roster invitees:

  • Matt Murton, OF
  • Albert Almora, OF
  • Juan Carlos Perez, OF
  • John Andreoli, OF
  • Kristopher Negron, UTL
  • Jesus Guzman, 1B
  • Brandon Gomes, RHP
  • Jean Machi, RHP
  • Ryan Williams, RHP

At this point, none of the nine cut players was expected to make the big league team out of camp. Together with prospects Almora and Andreoli, veterans Murton and Perez could head to AAA Iowa to create some outfield depth there. Negron and Guzman were always ticketed for AAA Iowa to serve as quality depth.

Murton was the feel-good story of the early spring, but he was slowed by an appendectomy, and will now have to prove himself in the minors if he wants to work his way back into the big leagues.

Gomes had a rough spring, and may or may not stick for a while with the Cubs at Iowa. Jean Machi looked decent this spring, and, given his strong track record, may wind up opting out (if he has that built into his contract) in favor of a better fit elsewhere. Williams is one of the Cubs’ better near-term pitching prospects, and he’ll head to AA or AAA to continue developing and waiting for a rotation opportunity.

After the cuts, the Cubs’ spring roster stands at 36.
