sloan park cubs springThe Cubs’ mini home stand at Sloan Park comes to a close today, with the Mariners visiting. Lefty James Paxton has been a quality prospect for a while, but hasn’t yet broken through as a big league regular. Maybe today’s the day he finally really does it. Or maybe it’s a Spring Training start.

Jason Hammel starts for the Cubs, in what will hopefully be a successful stretch out. He’s quietly had a dominant Spring Training, but, as with the guys getting bad results, I’m mostly interested in seeing that he’s healthy, is building velocity normally, and is feeling ready. So far, so good.

And with Hammel on the mound, that means Kyle Schwarber is back behind the plate.

I also notice that, with a lefty starting, Kris Bryant is batting third, and Ben Zobrist further down in the order – that’s the second time this week it’s looked like that against a lefty, with the two flip-flopped against righties. I suspect a trend is forming.

Matt Szczur gets a start, and there’s not much time left before the Cubs are going to have to make a decision on him. He is out of minor league options, so it’s either 25-man roster or the waiver wire for him.

Today’s game will be broadcast on CSN, and 670-AM The Score. Additional video and audio of the game will also be made available on MLB.tv or through the AtBat app. For future reference, you can check which games will be televised here.
